Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Don't think I've ever heard that one, Foe. I can't find it either, it's not on Spotify. There are also these two dancy electro tracks that sample TOL & Marian respectively. 😈

I'm sure there must be lots more out there.

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Awww, buggeration! - I thought that it was all probably far too good to be true that I found it so easily through Google, Helen!

I couldn't check the Link out myself in case I disturbed M&D sleeping.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Cover your ears Sera, or listen & scream out loud..? The inexplicably bad & inexplicably popular Sonsombre did a cover of FotN's "Slow Kill" earlier this year. It's pretty bloody awful. Sorry. Kind of me to share it tho'!

Been playing The Wake's Perfumes and Fripperies this morning. Enjoyably passable but not a must buy.

Yeh, I thought it was decent enough. Nothing special but not too disappointing either considering it's their first album for about 25 yrs.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Whilst hibernating under a blanket with a hot water bottle for the foreseeable future, I will be catching up on stuff from earlier in the year that I missed - usual mix of post-punk, goth, darkwave, deathrock, coldwave, a little industrial, EBM, shoegaze, synthpop etc. Only fair to warn you. The Quality Control department is on strike as always, I think it's permanent. Prepare for the end of year blitz.

😁

no. no laughing, just deep deep concern!

when i first heard that record, i imagined ricky martin to be a tiny, oily man with a pencil thin moustache, a shiny blue suit and an over-sized semi- accoustic guitar. close, huh?

message 817: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22289 comments I like it Helen! In this house you only have to utter the words Ricky Martin to have everyone falling about with laughter. It stems from a post-Christmas lunch a few years back when it was too hot for any outdoor games so we sat around the table playing Celebrity Heads. My son was Ricky Martin and he just could not guess the answer. We almost saw a 30 something man throw a tantrum!

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Awww Helen! - I hope the Winter hurries up and it soon gets much warmer for you ... x

The heavy Snow has thawed and is as good as gone this morning - but it has been replaced by an almost invisible layer of Ice as I unfortunately found out the hard and quite painful way when letting Mitz out for a piddle first thing this morning.

Incredibly and luckily though I managed to stop my Head from making contact with the Patio Paving Stones and will only have some rather spectacular Bruises to show for my unelegant crash landing followed by a full length slither from the Back Door, past the Garage, and then right over onto the Back Lawn! ;oO

Well, it must surely count as some form of exercise? It certainly got my Cardio Rate up anyway!!! And it all helps to fill in the endless and rather inactive time spent Shielding in Lock-down, you know?!! - LOL!!! ;o>

Wherever you are, please be extra careful and be safe out there, Everyone! ... x

The Links look like they will work for me, Helen, and so I'll be enjoying checking out your latest Playlist later on ... thank you ... x

I liked Lycia very much - especially the Singer's voice.

I thought The Wraith just lacked a little on punchiness and rawness.

I rather liked Boxes of Blow when I finally got into it but must admit that I had quite a few giggles here and there - and especially right at the start - because it kept on reminding me of something by Flight of the Conchords for some reason?! - LOL! ;o>

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Sera69 wrote: "Enjoying the Sisterisms of The Merry Thoughts. I'm sure Helen knows about them :)"

Hello! You called?
Yes, of course I've heard of them! Sisters soundalikes to the extreme. I think there was a rumour at one point that the singer was actually Andrew posing under a different name. Hee hee. Also, some of their songs get uploaded to YouTube & mislabeled as "lost" Sisters songs.

Eg- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vhVfBPw...

The Merry Thoughts greatly infuriate the diehard Sisters fans but if you take their music at face value it's absolutely fine, good fun goth, chill out people, don't take it so seriously ;-)

Marvin even looks a bit Eldritchy in some pics:

description

message 850: by Helen The Melon (new)

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments This overview of TMT might amuse you, Sera...

"Nature abhors a vacuum, and so does goth rock. in 1993, three years after the release of Vision Thing, the backcombed and emaciated masses were hungering for more flanged guitar, black leather and fog machines. With Eldritch nowhere to be found, a German band who’d been accomplishing very little since the mid-80s leaped into the fray, hoisting high the banner of sardonic, pentatonic, and utterly bastard groovy goth.

Not content with copying Eldritch’s voice so perfectly that four out of five winklepickered dancers can’t tell the difference, or also giving his drum machine a goofy name and band member status, or also covering another song from The Stooges’ debut album (the Sisters did '1969', the Thoughts 'I Wanna Be Your Dog'), or even adopting an equally Lovecraftian moniker, Merry Thoughts front man Marvin Arkham went so far as to mimic ol’ Andrew’s lyrical fascination with fin de siècle Americana, exemplified on 1993 debut single 'Second Generation'. Hailing from Germany, his quips in English aren’t quite as pithy as the original model’s, but Lord knows Eldritch got a fair bit of mileage out of his strategic deployment of Teutonic turns of phrase, and mein Deutsch ist nicht gut genug to tell how well the German parts of 'Marian' hold up. I suppose turn about is fair play in this case.

Second single 'Pale Empress' refined the template even further. A perfectly paced club anthem, it’s impossible not to love a track which meets all the hallmarks of the genre so on the nose (cracking B-side 'House Of Rain' does a great job of approximating 'Temple' era lo-fi Sisters).

The Thoughts’ first LP Millennium Done I: Empire Songs ('empire down'?) more or less lives up to the promise of its two singles, and showed Arkham & co. to be just as adept at mimicking the Sisters’ slower, more grinding moments: 'Stars' recalls 'Valentine' or even Eldritch’s gut-wrenching take on 'Emma'.

The second LP and final release, Psychocult, actually shows The Merry Thoughts moving away from being full-bore Sisters clones and developing a certain sound and swagger of their own. While Arkham’s vocals remain the same carbon-copy of Eldritch’s, some more developed keyboard instrumentation and the odd hint-o-techno beat helps to lend the tracks no small part of character. The title track and 'Chant' are both excellently composed, with big, booming choruses, and there’s even a cover of a Depeche Mode deep cut, 'The Sun & The Rainfall' for good measure. Genre aficionados should find a good deal to enjoy on Psychocult.

There have been some rumours of a Merry Thoughts reunion and new LP, though I remain skeptical. After all, what better way to continue to pay homage to the Sisters than by stringing your fanbase along with false hope of a new album?"
