Didn't realise you liked them, Suzy. "One Night" is probably one of my favourites of theirs too.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Yay!

Red Temple Spirits' two albums, "Dancing to Restore an Eclipsed Moon" (1988) & "If Tomorrow I Were Leaving for Lhasa, I Wouldn't Stay a Minute More..." (1989), are being remastered & reissued with some bonus material & demos.

3cd limited edition set - https://redtemplespirits.bandcamp.com/

Seems expensive with shipping from US but just look at the crazy prices on Amazon - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dancing-rest... & https://www.amazon.co.uk/tomorrow-lea.... Just ridiculous. I think even on Discogs each album was about £25+ for CD versions last time I looked. So, this latest Bandcamp offering isn't too bad after all, £30ish for the set. Will be great to get physical copies of these albums at last. Hurrah.

Oh, they're sort of psychedelic post-punk meets goth for those that haven't heard of these great albums. Interesting music with themes of Native American culture & Tibetan mysticism.

Dark Spirits - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LA42FW4...

Exodus From Lhasa - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-GEiEOs...

Yay! ;-)

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments This early mix from 1984 of "A Rock And A Hard Place" was uploaded recently. It says "the entire vocal performance is a unique recording with only 2 x 'far aways' ". (Yes, of interest to us Sisters nerds/fans only.)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0ie1wHo...

It also sounds a tiny bit faster than the album version? And it sounds like there are a couple of extra words after "from the valley of the"? Answers on a postcard please.

And she came to look for me
Sold me name and innocence
Took my key
And told me to follow her
Down from Igor with her bangles and her reference
One from the church, from the valley of the *
Well she wanted a haven and a place to hide, so I
Gave her an alibi, took her inside, but a
Rock and a hard place wait for me
Between the devil and the deep blue sea
Everything I ever did right or wrong
Hid out of sight where I belong

And I didn't have the heart to tell her why
And there wasn't a part of me that
Didn't want to say goodbye, but
Cause and effect go hand in hand with the
Devil may care but I don't mind, and I
Thought she'd never quite understand so I
Left her there that night and will she
Find me? I don't think so, no
When you go, you go alone
And I'm gone
Far away
Far away

And I didn't have the heart to tell her why
And there wasn't a part of me that
Didn't want to say goodbye, but a
Rock and a hard place wait for me
Between the devil and the deep blue sea
Everything I ever did right or wrong
Hid out of sight where I belong etc. etc.

* Sounds like he sings toilet brush to me 😁 Hee hee.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Dear Forum Santas,

The spiders are lying. I haven't done anything remotely naughty this year :-( And I have been very kind to the spiders - talking to them nicely, keeping them warm, not killing them, letting them bungee jump from the ceiling/lights, playing them soothing music etc.

But it's ok, I'll make do with a new toilet brush & holder if you're going to be mean to me. Not a black one tho' please - I'd rather it was stainless steel/chrome or even just a plain white one.

"Volume II - When I printed the hardcovers I got a lot of inquiries about a second printing. Now I am getting some questions about a second volume. I think that's a good sign. Yes, I do plan to do a second volume covering the years 1986-1993. And then, I hope, a third volume covering 1993-the present. But exactly when I'll find the time to do that is an open question. Keep your eyes peeled on Facebook, and I'll alert the newsletter"

Yeh, Suzy, I've had my eye on that book since it came out in hardback earlier this year: I think it was nearly £50 to buy it then, direct from USA. It's only just become available in UK this Dec, & in paperback format. It will have to wait until the New Year now anyway. Money money money :-(

I'm really liking the cover photo of Carl McCoy though 😁

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Great picture of them "floured up" here - https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Pd3...

Damnit, it's happened again today. I must be kiss of death to image sharing :-(

"McCoy’s good looks certainly played their part in the rise of Fields Of The Nephilim from odd bods in the outpost of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, to top dogs of the UK goth scene. But there were undoubtedly other factors, too. The doom-laden, atmospheric, Velvet Underground-filtered-through-a-spaghetti-western music also played its part. And so did Mother’s Pride.

The band – McCoy, guitarists Paul Wright and Pete Yates, bassist Tony Pettitt and drummer Alexander ‘Nod’ Wright – got plenty of attention when they first emerged in the mid-80s because they had the habit of covering themselves in flour before going on stage. The obvious question now is ‘why?’

'We had to develop something because we were such an odd-looking bunch,' says McCoy. 'We didn’t look like a band, so we mixed the Victorian clobber that we tended to pick up from charity shops for everyday wear with some sort of Spanish/Mexican spaghetti western vibe and basically covered it all in a load of shit, so we at least looked like we belonged together. It was a bit of a response to all that post-punk glam thing that was around at the time too, that whole Hanoi Rocks vibe. We weren’t comfortable with that. We were from Hitchin! But we didn’t really think about the flour that much. It just happened.'

It was inevitable that there’d be a Spinal Tap-style ‘mix up’, given the resemblance between the stage prop and nose candy.

'That happened at Nottingham Rock City,' laughs McCoy, again. 'A lot of our fans used to get involved with the ritual of it all and they’d bring flour to the gigs in plastic bags to chuck up in the air when we came on stage. Well, some of them came back to the hotel after the show that night and a cleaner found one of these bags. She called the police and the next thing we knew we were being hauled out of bed in the middle of the night and marched off to the nick in handcuffs! They searched our tour bus and found 13lbs of what they thought was cocaine, but of course it turned out to be flour! They couldn’t work us out at all. They must have thought we were heavily into our baking! Still, it got us half a page in The Mirror, I suppose!'

Of course the whole business with the flour was a godsend for writers hungry for something to hang a story on. And not least because it seemed to be so at odds with the Nephilim’s po-faced persona. So was it really all so doomy, so serious?

'The thing is, we weren’t morose people at all,' says McCoy. 'We had a good giggle a lot of the time. But for us the music was always very serious, even if maybe it wasn’t to other people.' "

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments And some silliness I came across last month but didn't bother posting at the time. Made me chuckle, anyway:

Robert Smith Leaves Flaming Bag of Fried Chicken on Morrissey’s Porch Again

The Cure founder and noted prankster Robert Smith left another flaming bag of fried chicken on Morrissey’s doorstep last night, sources close to the singers allege.

“I can’t believe he fell for it again — this is twice in a month! He deserves it for calling me a whingebag in the 80s and then spending the next 30 years literally moaning into a microphone and canceling shows because the sun was too bright or whatever. Hypocrite,” said Smith, peering out from behind a bush 50 yards from Morrissey’s front door. “This is just one of my little, poetic ways of screwing with him. Once in 1996, I tricked him into attending a Spice Girls show — he was so excited when he saw all of the Union Jack flags, he thought he was at a pro-England rally.”

Morrissey, visibly shaken from stomping out the flaming bag of meat, has suspected for years that Smith has been torturing him.

“It was that Blackpool arsehole — I know that fright wig of his from anywhere, skulking in the darkness. Why couldn’t he just put shit in the bag like a normal person?” said Morrissey while clutching a cricket bat and staring out the window. “To have those innocent souls set ablaze and trampled underfoot. Such indignity! So what if I trashed him in the press for a decade? I’ve never done anything in my life to deserve this.”

While Scotland Yard responded to Morrissey’s frantic 999 call, they were confident further action would not be necessary.

“While it does appear Morrissey is being targeted, we’ve little reason to believe that the culprit is the lead singer of a universally beloved goth band. If anything, it’s just neighborhood children playing pranks on an old man,” said constable Terry Worthingham. “We’ve been called several times to this address for acts of mischief in the last month, and each time he has either blamed Mr. Smith or immigrants.”

Smith was later seen in a telephone booth with singer Siouxsie Sioux, each stifling their laughter as they called Morrissey pretending to be Johnny Marr and saying “Meat is Murder” was the worst song he’s ever written.
