Helen The Melon | 3432 comments There seems to be a whole host of dodgy Cure cover versions around at the mo, must be something in the air:-

Burn by Stabbing Westward - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-QwZQI...

Friday I'm In Love by Boys Don't Cry - https://emergencyhearts.bandcamp.com/...
Urgh. (In fact quite a lot of bad covers on that comp.)

Boys Don't Cry by Miley Cyrus - https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=y.... 😈

Stabbing Westward have also done an awful cover of The Killing Moon - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aPDApUw...

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Hmmph. What's going on here? - https://zadars.bandcamp.com/track/ali...

Yes, it's bloody awful, but look at the lyrics. Hmmph.

Hannah in her party dressed to kill
She needs you like she needs her pills
You tell her everything's ok
She cries as she runs away

Pass the crystal, spread the lies
No secrets, no surprise
Tell her she can have it all
Tell her where the rain will fall

See her shiver, see her go
See her painted face glow
She cries, what is she seeing?
I am the Alien Being

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Protector Of Alice! :-)

Actually, I don't mind this cover version too much, it's ok - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2b5RO5p...
_______________

If you have time, watch this video of John Ashton talking about working with The Sisters & producing "Alice" - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wuQm27k...

And, earliest known demo available, I think - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v_VqJlC...
Alice is at approx 6 mins 26s.

Short review of Alice/Floorshow from the time it was released:-
"One of this week’s surprises. Supremely intense and disturbingly demonic, this double-A-sided package is nonetheless ‘rockier’ than you might expect. 'Floorshow’ is the definite standout, an unsettling traditional sub-HM rhythm supplemented by bizarre 'slow-slow-quick-quick-slow’ dancestep instructions and various contorted cries of disruption and despair.
'Alice’ is rather more obviously JD-derived, but it remains broodily compelling, with vocals reminiscent of Peter Hammill gargling with the remains of a shattered car windscreen."

Hee hee.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Pointless, not v interesting anecdote time...

My boyfriend circa '93 & '94 was also a huge music fan, lots of different stuff (eg. L Cohen, R Stones, M S Preachers, Jesus & M Chain, classical stuff too) but not really much mainstream pop. One day I spotted that he had gone and bought this single, see link below, & I laughed & laughed. He huffed and said it was a really great top quality pop song & that if it had been by the Sisters I would love it too & would have bought it. He did not share my love of the Sisters but didn't dislike them either: he even bought me a black on black "Some Girls Wander By Mistake" t-shirt (with black on black "utterly bastard groovy" on the reverse).

Something they should cover live when they're able to tour again, eh?

testdept.bandcamp.com/album/disturbance

stumbled upon it on blandcamp, but i'm not paying oli's £4 p+p, found a cheaper copy to buy on discogs. it's like a more mature (but no less angry) take on their original 80s output (way less techno, as they became in the 90s) - you know me, i need purposeful music, and this is good rant!

Discolied by Sturm Café - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sINmCh8...

Most breakfast presenters come across as condescending arseholes when they are faced with something they either don't like or don't understand. Anne and Nick are good examples of this.

And another awful interview with Tony James & Martin Degville of S S Sputnik (yes tech, I know, they're shite) - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ErvpgUV...

Quote from Tony re: trying to get a band together for his SSS vision:-

"Of course I went to gigs too, to see if by chance someone else had been discovered, was out there already, that I might be able to steal.... One night a young journalist I knew told me about this little band playing at London's Embassy club.

There were only three people in the audience and afterwards I was so exhilarated by what I had seen that I had to speak to the singer - Andrew Eldritch - and ask if he would leave this unheard of group, The Sister’s of Mercy to join me and my new vision. I instinctively felt Eldritch had something really special, that he was the real thing and we talked excitedly that night. But he had his own vision to follow, however, because of that connection, we became friends and kept in touch through his rise to what would ultimately be Goth God. Andrew faithfully sent me every Sister’s of Mercy single in the post for the next six years, I knew he was something very special."

Oh yeh, Andrew as singer with SSS, what a thought! Can just see him now with a pink pineapple hairdo & in spandex tights. 😈

Been wanting to adjust the name of this thread for a while now but no idea what would be appropriate. "Alternative Music - Post-punk, Goth, Deathrock, Darkwave, Coldwave, Industrial, EBM, Shoegaze etc."?? Or is that just needlessly complicating things?
