Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Me too, Sera. Surprised the tape didn't wear out I watched it so many times! Just love the start with FALAA, all the smoke, audience chucking their arms up in the air, weird video effects....

Must dash but I'll try & dig out some info/stories I read about that gig later on this week, if I remember. Lots of speed involved I believe, obviously - I mean the gig, not me needing lots of speed to remember. Aargh.

message 657: by Helen The Melon (new)

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Thought I'd better do this today otherwise I would forget.

I'm probably telling you stuff you already know about the "Wake" concert so I do apologise. Oh well. Here it is anyway:-

So, Gary Marx had left the band a few months earlier (last official appearance with TSOM was for the Old Grey Whistle Test at the beginning of April '85) & the rest of the band completed the tour as a three piece (threesome?) but Marx was expected to join them for the Royal Albert Hall "Wake" farewell gig - Hussey & Adams left after this concert & Eldritch moved to Hamburg. Marx was a no-show so it was just the three of them again.

Anyway, Andrew allegedly had several cracked & bruised ribs, was heavily bandaged & in a lot of pain. This is why he doesn't move around much, just some expressive shoulder shrugging etc. no slinky hip swinging. Ha! Apparently it was only due to his ability to ingest a vast quantity of amphetamines that he was able to perform at all that night. The rumour is that he was struggling so much, he had to be persuaded to get back into stage for the second encore; he'd had enough after "Train". Lemmy was backstage & persuaded Andrew to go back on for a second encore ("Ghostrider/Louie Louie") after gathering up all the left-over speed he could find & administering it to his patient. I don't think anyone knows why he was injured.

For some reason the concert started earlier than people were expecting. There was no support act just a film screening & an organ recital! Therefore the concert finished rather early & some people were still arriving as they were closing their set. This is why they were made to do a second encore.

Setlist:
First And Last And Always
Body And Soul
Marian
No Time To Cry
Walk Away
Possession
Emma
Amphetamine Logic
A Rock And A Hard Place
Floorshow
Alice
Gimme Shelter
Fix
Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Train
Ghostrider / Louie Louie

But a few of these are missing from the "Wake" official VHS release.
The Sisters were denied the video rights needed for Gimme Shelter. Train & Ghostrider/Louie are missing too.

"Why isn't the last encore included on 'Wake', the film of the Royal Albert Hall concert in 1985?
By the time we hit the stage for the last encore, some of the necessary machines had been switched off. Various film technicians had decided that we'd finished. Andrew had been performing with a couple of cracked ribs, and he had indeed decided to finish, but Lemmy was in the dressing room to convince him that another encore was in order. After a short discussion and a multilateral assessment of all the available pharmaceuticals, the band hit the stage again - but too speedily for the aforementioned technicians."

"Speedily", hee hee, how appropriate.
Ok, sorry if that sent you all to sleep.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments And a quote from lighting designer Phil Wiffen:

"By the time of the Albert Hall gig, I had been with the Sisters for nearly three years. My design was similar to the approach I’d taken for recent tours and, at Andrew’s request, smoke effects played a huge part.

For this show, I positioned smoke and wind machines in front of some balcony boxes, so at any given moment I could blast the auditorium with smoke. With a light behind that, I could achieve a really stunning effect – in fact, despite everything else that was happening, the smoke is what most people remember about that night."

😁

Sera69 | 1933 comments Is there anywhere Lemmy doesn't turn up??! Very interesting Helen, didn't realise Mr E had sustained some injuries or that it wasn't the full FALAA line up. And, until i saw Rammstein i always thought the Sisters (and Carter USM and Bauhaus) had the best lighting show. Simple but perfect for the atmosphere.

message 661: by Helen The Melon (new)

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Glad someone else finds it interesting. More lighting info here, Sera - https://www.enteclive.com/portfolio-i...

I think Lemmy was just wherever there was some speed, or vice versa ;-)

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Damnit. Forgot about this part of the story yesterday.

Wayne says:

"I'd been out the evening before the show in London with Ian Astbury and Lemmy. Craig and Andrew had stayed in the hotel and gone to bed early apparently. Anyway, Ian, Lemmy, and I had gone to see Killing Joke at the Hammersmith Palais and Lemmy had introduced me to Jimmy Page, one of MY guitar heroes and my first encounter with a Zeppelin. It's fair to say that Jimmy was in an even worse state than I was, he being held up by the bar whilst I danced the stagger in front of him. Still, I shook the very hand that had come up with such great guitar riffs as Stairway To Heaven and Kashmir. I asked him if he'd produce our next album; he told me to f**k off. I liked him.

So, the day of the Sisters Royal Albert Hall show and I was so hungover. I couldn't stand up without wanting to fall over and vomit. I remember Andrew being pissed off with me, nothing new there then, him thinking that I would let the side down come show time. He should've known better. A couple of white lines and a stiff drink saw me right and I was ready if not quite right as rain.
I am a huge Dylan fan and I love his version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door but I have to say that of all the very many others that have covered this song I think this Sisters version is maybe the best version I have heard. From the monotony of the very simple drum machine, to the neanderthal quality of the bass, to the brooding malevolence of Andrew's vocal, and to quite possibly my finest ever guitar solo - one of the very few times I actually played it well and thankfully the cameras were there to capture it. We've even played it with The Mission a few times and never even come close to the magnificence of the Sisters version."

"So how was playing at the Albert Hall with that raging hangover?
Well I mean we obviously got the film.
We’re brilliant in it. It sounds and looks great and I remember it being great at the time. It’s one of those things you wake up with a hangover but the best way to deal with is it keep drinking so I did.
Is that the one where you had to have a bucket next to you in case you were sick?
Yes. That is the first time I ever had a bucket on stage it was by the side of the monitor."

Classy. Eeew.

And there's a little bit about his night out (with Ian & Lemmy) before the Wake gig here in this interview - https://www.loudersound.com/features/...

I'm surprised doubly, one Wayne comes over as pretty decent and honest (probably age) and second he's fairly complimentary to Eldritch (possibly age and hindsight again) There's nothing in that interview that surprises me about the Sisters but i've a bit more appreciation for The Mish. I still think Wayne's writing the same song over and over again, mind! But it's an ok song to be fair!

Yeh, I s'pose old Wayne's not so bad after all. At least he has a decent sense of humour & is happy to do interviews & speak openly about stuff - don't know how much of it is true: how can he remember when there was so much booze & drugs involved?? He's also more than happy to engage with his fans/audience both in real life & on the internet. Apparently, his autobiog Salad Daze is an entertaining read even if you're not a huge Mish fan.

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments And here are the songs from the RAH '85 that are missing off the official Wake vid. (Sorry, just doing this bit by bit when I have time & when I remember stuff.)
They're from a bootleg vid captured by an audience member so the quality's not great but these are supposed to be the best available:-

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments And last bit of info about that time...
Here's FALAA and Marian from that Old Grey Whistle Test performance just a few months before Wake: their last official appearance together before Gary Marx left the band.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9LVhq3B...

Another interesting bit of info from Wayne about the OGWT:-

"I remember that about 30 seconds before the show started Gary's guitar cut out and he was supposed to start the first song (FALAA). With no time to stop and fix it, Craig and I improvised with me starting the song playing Gary's guitar part, Craig coming in and playing mine and then reverting to the bass line when the song kicked in by which time our roadie had managed to change Gary's guitar lead and get him working again."

This is why Andrew turns to stare at Gary - about 30 secs in, I think.

Ok. I'll go away now. Bye. X

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments Butterfly turns into a moth after listening to the Sisters of Mercy

A local butterfly has ‘gone moth’ and changed its name to Lucius Doomskull after listening to Floodland once too often, it has emerged.

Lucius, who until recently was a Cabbage White and enjoyed nothing more than flittering from flower to flower on a sunny afternoon, now is clad in shades of ashen grey and sits on a leaf, artfully silhouetted ‘neath the silver circlet of the full moon, whilst writing heartfelt poetry about how all the other butterflies are insensitive wankers who don’t get it.

Friends said that Lucius had started staying out all night and making sure his wings had lots of dew on them so they’ll catch the light just so, and was recently found proboscis-down in a pile of ketamine.

“It all started when he flew into an open window and heard Lucretia, My Reflection playing on some human’s stereo. He spent all afternoon flapping his wings like, two flaps forward, two flaps back, and slowly waving his antennae in meaningful patterns,” said Red Admiral Simon Williams.

"It’s just a phase,” he added. “Like the time he heard Iron Maiden for the first time and spent an hour furiously banging his head against the casement window.

“I remember when I’d just pupated I wanted to be a Rusty Tussock Moth because I thought they were all romantic with their going out until 4am with all the other strange nocturnal creatures, but then I had to start getting up in the morning and going round collecting nectar so that was that.”

Yeh, the buggers are everywhere. Had another giant house spider in the bath the other morning.
And then I found another one behind my bedside cabinet when I pulled it out to retrieve something.
And then even worse - I was making my bed the other day & found one lone large spider leg in it. Aargh! I'd only just changed all the bed linen a few days before.
And the other night while getting ready for bed there was one on my chest of drawers. I went to pick it up but it ba-doinged into all my lotions & potions. So, I moved them out the way & went to catch it again. Ba-doing. Onto the wall. Went to catch it again. Major ba-doing into the ether. Couldn't find it after that. No idea where it went.
And...

Not sure if I have any in my houseplants, I've not seen any when I've been watering/talking to them. ;-)
I have a large Peace Lily too, Suzy. It really needs splitting & re-potting but I can't be arsed. Mr. Ficus needs re-potting too, he's huge now, probably up to my waist. A fine specimen.

The bodies on the naked on the low damp ground
In the violet hour to the violent sound
And the darkness the blinding the eyes that shine
And the voices singing the line on line
This is the floorshow the clapping hands
Animal flow from the animal glands
In the violet hour to the violent sound
Going round and around and around and around and ...

I feel the bite I feel the beat I see the dancing feet
I feel the light I feel the heat I see the new elite
I see the final floorshow I see the western dream
I see the faces glow and I see the bodies steam

See them shimmy see them go
See their painted faces glow
Slow slow quick quick slow
See those pagans go go go go go

This is the floorshow the last ideal
It's populist got mass appeal
The old religion redefined
For the facile futile totally blind

Mundane by day inane at night
Pagan playing in the flashing light
In the violet hour to the violent sound
Going round and around and around and around and ...
The bodies on the naked on the low damp ground
In the violet hour to the violent sound
And the darkness the blinding the eyes that shine
And the voices singing line on line

Helen The Melon | 3432 comments 'Twas the night before Gothmas (or A visit from Saint Eldritch) – a poem for Hallowe’en

‘Twas the night before Gothmas, when all through the flat
Not a creature was stirring, not even a bat
Ripped stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that Saint Eldritch soon would be there;

The goths were all nestled all snug in their crypts,
With visions in mind of being tied up and whipped,
When out from the garden there came such a commotion
As of someone on speed singing Hey, This Corrosion

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
When, out the sky and scattering the junkies,
Came a miniature hearse, drawn by eight tiny flunkies,

With a little old driver, so glum and so angry,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Andy.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now, Murphy! now, Fatbob! now, Siouxsie and Addams!
On, Coleman! on Danzig! on, Reznor and Mansons!
I drew in my hand, looked away from the hearse,
As down the chimney St. Eldritch came with a curse.

He was dressed all in leathers, from his head to his foot,
With his shades all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of unreleased albums in hand,
He offered to play them for a mere hundred grand

A wink of his eye and a nod of ‘alright?’,
Soon gave me to know he wouldn’t be singing tonight;
With not one more word he went straight to his task,
Of filling the stockings with all goths could ask;

With black velvet chokers and scent of patchouli
A notebook for poems and a t-shirt quite ghoul-y
Black wide -brimmed hats and a plectrum to pluck,
Cider and black and nice boots for…good luck.

First class tickets to Whitby and a spot at the bar,
Skinny black jeans and Wayne Hussey's head in a jar!
Then laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his hearse, to his team gave some snakebite
And off they all flew away to a great height
But I heard him exclaim, ere they flew out of sight,
MISERABLE GOTHMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A SAD NIGHT!

It certainly is. I heard it last week but was kind enough to NOT inflict it upon you! I've said it before - Alice is sacred, don't touch Alice. ;-)

Btw. Look here & scroll down to 'No Great Surprise' & the photo of the chap in his cafe - https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/uk-engla...
There's a Sisters fan who owns a coffee shop in Poole.
