Oh my, that is adorable!!!!!!!! It makes my heart all mushy.
I'm a bit angry this morning. I woke up to 17°C in the house, 2°C outside, so I just went and switched on the boiler... which didn't want to work. I went outside in the freezing weather (my boiler is on the balcony) to see what was happening, and didn't understand anything, but I also noticed that a pipe was lying on the floor. I called the maintenance guys and they told me they can't come before 4 pm. It's now 8.45 am and as you know I work from home, so I will be freezing the whole day while I try to work. Grrr.

I recommend warm socks, lots of hot tea and frequent stretching exercises to keep your blood flowing.

(Can you tell I have also worked from home with no heating!)
I can also recommend a heater, if that's what it's called. The thingy that you plug into a socket and it warms the room. Best thing since sliced bread
idiffer, unfortunately I don't have one, that would be a great idea. Esther, thanks for the tips, I'll do that!
Marina, try tights under your jeans/trackies or whatever you work in. I have invested in a few pair for my first winter up the mountain, as that's what we wore as kids to keep warm.A good 15 fast walk every 90 minutes should warm you as well. Alternately, grab the doona/duvet/eiderdown from your bed and wrap yourself in it while you work.
I used to spend long periods in a walk-in refrigerator- I found wearing an undershirt really helped. Good luck, I hope the maintenance people work quickly.
Thanks, luckily the maintenace guy came at 4.30 pm and he managed to solve the problem in 15 minutes!

I realize I have been rather half-heartedly attending this group this past couple of months, but have a LOT going on with my Aspie daughter living at home all of the time now and looking for work, my youngest applying to and auditioning for music colleges (plus he is very busy) and my middle one still at home getting ready to transfer from a 2 to a 4 year (but she has a boyfriend so her grades have gone from mostly stellar to more B's and maybe even a C or two, which is NOT good for a teen who needs to get merit and financial aid. It's NOT the boyfriend who is at fault, btw, but her. He would totally understand if she spent more time studying and she procrastinates terribly (don't ask where she got that--oh, wait, from my mother--and, yes, me). But she is even worse at procrastinating than I was at her age.Plus life in general.
Hopefully I'll be able to do more, but I am less and less likely to read books I don't feel like it when I'm really, really busy :).
Karin , sounds like you have your hands full! Hang in there . I hope things settle down a little for you soon and you have some time for you . Take care .
Wow Karin, that is a lot to juggle. Remember when we believed having multiple toddlers was exhausting? In my experience multiple young adults can be just as challenging- and you can’t just put them down fo a nap.Good luck - may the force (of Wonder Woman) be with you.
Karin, I understand where you are coming from. I have been not fully contributing, usually just reading threads daily and doing the This Day in Lit History thread. Life has been stressful and busy with my impending move; culminating today when the removalists come, just when we are expecting heaviest rains for a long time. :(
Thanks, all. Eventually things should slow down to a dull roar, even if temporarily. I don't expect it to slow down a LOT until perhaps June or July.Who'd have thought my kids would take up so much of my time at ages 17-22? I certainly didn't foresee it, but all families and kids are different :).
I went to a book fair both last Thursday and yesterday. It's quite a big fair taking place in Rome, and the publishers on show are mainly small and independent, which I like. I'm very proud of myself because I managed to only buy three books - I really need to spend less money from now on due to personal life changes coming up next year (I won't say more for the moment). It was nice because I got to meet with a couple of friends whom I don't see often.

Fingers crossed for whatever these changes will be!

I'm still unpacking and getting the new house in order. Discovered I need another antique bureau so a day trawling auction houses will be in the near future. Pets have settled in really well although neither cat has been allowed to venture outside yet.
Bette, nice to hear you are slowly but surely settling in. Might the cats run away? Is that why they cannot go out?
Only one will be allowed out as the other is a totally indoor cat. Tosca will stay inside for nearly two weeks, then be allowed out for short supervised time, hopefully working up to about five hours a day. My BIL has also built her a cat enclosure (smaller than I had hoped) but at least she will get fresh air. She also has to share the outside gardens with my sister's cat so unless they can get on... All that is on the proviso that she leaves the birds alone; we have large parrots, rosellas, magpies - she won't go near a 'big' bird.
Thanks for explaining, Bette. I see what you are dealing with!We have snow, snow and more snow. YOU have summer.

Moving is very stressful, Bette. Hopefully you will have everything sorted soon
Thank you everyone for all your comments about baby Rue. She is three weeks old today and doing wonderfully. Mom is still sore but coping.

Glad to hear it, Diane. That sounds like a difficult labour and birth and I hope she recovers quickly

Diane, my maternal grandmother use to say that if there was a god, women would be born with zippers. Birthing is hard, but then look what you get! Glad to hear Rue is doing well.
Oscar's Law was passed in Victoria (AU) Parliament last night. From July 2018, no puppies or kittens to be sold from pet shops and limit placed on puppy farms. Hooray.

Melbourne, AU. 5.35am. Very excited to find that my offer placed yesterday with a dealer for a mahogany 1880 Victorian bureau has been accepted. Instead of using antique stores, I used ebay and what a deal I got! The added bonus is that the dealer is only 15kms from where I live so an easy pickup for my brother-in-law; he doesn't know it yet but my sis offered his services, lol.
Ebay is very good for that sort of thing particularly if you can collect it. I love antique furniture but I currently have a very modern flat so everything is new. It has less character
Hello everyone, just wanted to pop in and wish you all well. I've been very busy, I've recently started a new job (in Next, as I'm sure most of you will probably be aware of that shop). It has been pretty hectic, and I've ended up doing full-time hours which I don't mind as the store is bustling, so my days fly in, but I cannot believe it's the 18th of December. At the minute, I'm trying my best to keep up with my university work as well, but they've been great, as I let them know I would be starting a new job, so I've been granted some leeway regarding assignments. Anyways, I just wanted to write to check everyone was well and if I don't manage to get back before the new year, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break and lovely new year.

That's great news; I have to say that I've always found it very strange for pups and kittens to be sold from pet shops, I hope something similar happens here in regards to puppy farms. It is horrendous, especially down south, we were caught out by a puppy farm about twelve years, we had gotten a miniature schnauzer pup who fell sick and died twenty fours after we got her; it turned out to be parvo which she passed on to our other miniature schnauzer who was called Oscar, but he got over it, after spending two weeks in the vets so we ran up thousands in vets bills.

Alannah, that is one of the problems with the puppy farms/mills - no immunisation. I'm sorry you had to go thru that. Hope Oscar's Law catches on in the UK.

I am happy, thank you. It's a better store, a lot more support and less stress. In my old job, I was being left on the shop floor on my own most hours for up to two hours at a time, and it's not as if it was a small shop, it was quite big, but there's none of that here in this new job.
