Jenny, it's lovely to see your name pop up.

Ouch, that's cold Jenny!
We went through a cold period here, but cold for me is 10 degrees Celsius - been a while since I lived in a place that got below zero. :)
Great to "see" you and fingers crossed on an end to the reading slump! During the pandemic when most people were reading, I read almost nothing at all. But once I finally started reading again, I realized how much I'd missed it!

That to me sounds like eternal springtime! Are you based in California Greg? (sorry, I forgot) Today the sun decided to make a guest appearance, chilly cold but sunny I can quite happily get on board with! As for pandemic reading: same here! Starting to feel like I am growing back into my own skin now that I am wriggeling out of my reading slump.
Yes, that's right Jenny! I'm based in California.
My cousin is visiting me right now, and when she left the other coast of the US in Massachusetts, it was -78 degrees Celsius there. Quite a difference!

Also in Italy has been really cold these last few days - -2/-3 C (I know, it can be much worse, but for me it's absolutely terrible!!!)

Laura, does some of Italy have a typically year round mild climate like California does? Or do you get a snowy season there? Just curious.
I know those few times it reaches near 0 degrees Celsius here, that is very unusually cold for us. I was up early to do a volunteering thing a few weeks ago and had to scrape ice off my car's windshield. That is the first time I have had to do that since moving here in the 1990s! :)

North of Italy the weather is more or less like in London: cold in Winter - it snows quite a lot, especially in the Alps, nice and warm - it can be really hot sometimes - in Summer.
More or less the same where I live - Central Italy: Florence, Siena, Bologna, Rome.
The south of Italy can be warmer: from Napoli down, it rarely gets under 5/8 °C (a part from Puglia - Bari, Lecce - that facing the Balkans can be very cold sometime; it snowed there a week ago for instance). Sicily, Sardinia are definitely warmer. Still not as nice as California (I remember being there by the end of October beginning of November and I went around without socks. That's hardly possible here). But the weather is changing; in Sicily was really hot something like a month ago: there were people at the seaside sunbathing (and someone also having a swim)

Greg, I remember when visiting San Francisco, the idea of eternal spring seemed fabulous to me, as it is my favourite season. I wonder though: do you get the same sense of elation once winter has passed and it is finally getting warmer and you kind of feel yourself (here's where my english becomes spotty...) "sprout" again? (you know, a little like a tree waking up from it's winter nap?) ;) Or is the shift in seasons not really pronounced enough?
And LauraT: how is your job going? Are you still in the same place as when I visited?

No, I don't have a strong sense of seasons here at all, which I do sometimes miss. There is a connection to the earth that can come from the cycle of seasons.
I've lived in other regions of the US with harsh winters. So I remember what it was like, both for good and for bad. I miss "real" winters sometimes.
But I remember one blizzard in Illinois where the snow got so high we had to dig our way out of the house! Quite a fun adventure as a child, though I imagine my parents were not nearly as thrilled! :)

I completely get what you are saying. While winter isn't my favourite season, I love that it feels like it gives me an excuse to be a little more withdrawn, drink copious amounts of hot chocolate, not so copious amounts of mulled wine, cuddle up in front of a fire and read a book. Seasons do give the year a nice rhythm: a time for splashing about in water and a time to be a bit more introspective.

Yeah, I am guessing your parents look back to that a bit less fondly, but it makes for a hell of a memory! :)

Yes, happy valentine's day to all those in countries that support it today. Anyone have special plans?
Ours will be low-key as I'm preparing for the trip to Taiwan this Friday. The trip is for work, but I'm excited nevertheless - it's my first time there, and I do have a couple free days there before work starts to see some things.

Taiwan sounds fun, Greg! Hope you have a great time there.
I'm single, but I kind of got into the spirit of Valentine's and wanted to get myself some cupcakes (red velvet, duh). They were out of stock almost everywhere! Or there were flavors I don't like. Still, I'm happy for all those who had the joy of cupcakes written in their stars, as well as the bakeries who turned a good profit ;)

I've been working late today, but my partner promised to come by in a bit with a large tub of ice-cream. So not quite a cupcake, but almost!
Damini, did you get yourself something else to make up for the cupcake shortage?

Oooh Taiwan! Have a great trip! How long will you be staying for?

Thanks Damini and Jenny!
I'll be there about a week and a half; so not very long. But I have some weekend days free to explore there both before and after the work week, and I'm really looking forward to it!

Sadly Jenny, I didn't. Just carried on with work and regular life.
I will, however, take myself on an indulgent solo lunch this weekend!
