In Canada and the States, we have a Labour Day in September, so here it's just May Day, but not widely celebrated :)

I've read that; and it is peculiar, since it was in USA that the 1st of May begun as labour day!!!

Interesting. Canada first celebrated Labour Day on September 3, 1894. The US first celebrated it on September 5, 1882. I am not sure what the difference is between this one and the May 1 one :)

And see our Alessandro Manzoni on Napoleon:
Ei fu. Siccome immobile,
Dato il mortal sospiro,
Stette la spoglia immemore
Orba di tanto spiro,
Così percossa, attonita5
La terra al nunzio sta,

Muta pensando all’ultima
Ora dell’uom fatale;
Nè sa quando una simile
Orma di piè mortale10
La sua cruenta polvere
A calpestar verrà.

[p. 690 modifica]
Lui folgorante in solio
Vide il mio genio e tacque;
Quando, con vece assidua,15
Cadde, risorse e giacque,
Di mille voci al sonito
Mista la sua non ha:

Vergin di servo encomio
E di codardo oltraggio,20
Sorge or commosso al subito
Sparir di tanto raggio:
E scioglie all’urna un cantico
Che forse non morrà.

Dall’Alpi alle Piramidi,25
Dal Manzanarre al Reno,
Di quel securo il fulmine
Tenea dietro al baleno;
Scoppiò da Scilla al Tanai,
Dall’uno all’altro mar.30

Fu vera gloria? Ai posteri
L’ardua sentenza: nui
Chiniam la fronte al Massimo
Fattor, che volle in lui
Del creator suo spirito35
Più vasta orma stampar.

La procellosa e trepida
Gioia d’un gran disegno,
L’ansia d’un cor che indocile
Serve, pensando al regno;40
E il giunge, e tiene un premio
Ch’era follia sperar;

Tutto ei provò: la gloria
Maggior dopo il periglio,
La fuga e la vittoria,45
[p. 691 modifica]
La reggia e il tristo esiglio:
Due volte nella polvere,
Due volte sull’altar.

Ei si nomò: due secoli,
L’un contro l’altro armato,50
Sommessi a lui si volsero,
Come aspettando il fato;
Ei fe’ silenzio, ed arbitro
S’assise in mezzo a lor.

E sparve, e i dì nell’ozio55
Chiuse in sì breve sponda,
Segno d’immensa invidia
E di pietà profonda,
D’inestinguibil odio
E d’indomato amor.60

Come sul capo al naufrago
L’onda s’avvolve e pesa,
L’onda su cui del misero,
Alta pur dianzi e tesa,
Scorrea la vista a scernere65
Prode remote invan;

Tal su quell’alma il cumulo
Delle memorie scese!
Oh quante volte ai posteri
Narrar se stesso imprese,70
E sull’eterne pagine
Cadde la stanca man!

Oh quante volte, al tacito
Morir d’un giorno inerte,
Chinati i rai fulminei,75
Le braccia al sen conserte,
Stette, e dei dì che furono
L’assalse il sovvenir!

[p. 692 modifica]
E ripensò le mobili
Tende, e i percossi valli,80
E il lampo de’ manipoli,
E l’onda dei cavalli,
E il concitato imperio,
E il celere ubbidir.

Ahi! forse a tanto strazio85
Cadde lo spirto anelo,
E disperò: ma valida
Venne una man dal cielo,
E in più spirabil aere
Pietosa il trasportò;90

E l’avviò, pei floridi
Sentier della speranza,
Ai campi eterni, al premio
Che i desidéri avanza,
Dov’è silenzio e tenebre95
La gloria che passò.

Bella Immortal! benefica
Fede ai trionfi avvezza!
Scrivi ancor questo, allegrati;
Chè più superba altezza100
Al disonor del Golgota
Giammai non si chinò.

Tu dalle stanche ceneri
Sperdi ogni ria parola:
Il Dio che atterra e suscita,105
Che affanna e che consola,
Sulla deserta coltrice
Accanto a lui posò.

I have to admit though that I'd love to study a bit of Spanish as well; I had decided to start this year, but all schools are closed for Covid. Hopefully next year

It's important to start all having at least one: the world at large needs to start again.
It's therefore so important that also poorer countries get a help for the vaccination supply

Karin I was officially immune last Monday. Our state is going back to normal as of today, but some places are asking non-fully vaccinated people to wear masks (it's on the honour system) and some places will still ask for them.

My son's summer employer has said it can be masks off. People in those jobs can't breathe properly in their masks and most have worn them below the nose (my son has two this year that he can breathe t through, but he's going to stop wearing his.

We went back to mostly normal 3 weeks ago when they finally removed the requirement for mask indoors.
We celebrated by going to watch a film in the newly reopened cinema.
Then someone brought back a variant from their holiday abroad and infected a dozen or so unvaccinated school children.
So now everyone, including the vaccinated, has to isolate when returning from abroad and we are back to wearing masks indoors.

Ruth | 756 comments Hi everyone! I haven't checked in awhile and there has been a lot going on. First off I moved to Senior Apartments and I am now semi retired as of the beginning of June. I am only working two days a week per diem. After this last year, constantly working short and getting Covid I decided I was done. I am still having stomach issues because of my bout with Covid and just decided I can't do this anymore. I have just started reading again because I was busy with moving and everything but I am looking forward to having more time for myself now. I hope everyone is well. Things are getting back to normal. I actually got to see my family a couple of weeks ago because everyone is now vaccinated. it was the first time I had seen them in over a year. It has been a tough year.

As I understand it all variants can infect vaccinated people.
Vaccinated people are just less likely to become infected, less likely to develop symptoms and any symptoms they do develop will be less serious.
Among the seriously ill there is no one who has been vaccinated and, as far as I know, none of the children have become seriously ill.
This particular variant is much more infectious but less likely to make you ill.

More than a week later and my knee is still problematic. The tablets the Dr gave me are helping but they can only be taken for 10 days which ends tomorrow :0(

Last week I took sick days and then worked from home but we are limited about how many days we can work from home and I feel ridiculous taking sick days for a painful limp.

About a year ago I wanted some slip-ons to wear around the house and bought them exactly according to advice I read from a podiatrist (little heel, supportive sleeve for the foot etc)
They are amaxingly comfortable so I have been wearing them a lot and it helps but they are slip-ons so not acceptable for work.

The traffic getting to Jerusalem was appalling - 4hrs to travel less than 200km!!
That didn't help my knee even as just a passenger but amazingly my knee hurt a lot less after a couple of beers!

The beer festival was fun. Due to the entrance fee there were no children and Jerusalem is almost always a few degrees cooler than elsewhere (due to the elevation and being inland away from the humidity of the coast) so a pleasant 24C.
There was a good range of beers even some new ones for us to sample. And a pretty good DJ as well.
