Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments This weekend the clocks went back so I am getting up in the dark again.
This morning it was really chilly but I didn't want to take a coat because it is supposed to hit 20C midday.

A. | 7 comments Leslie wrote, " I have gotten an appointment for my first vaccine shot! So glad to be moving forward with this!!" I've had both 1st & 2nd shots. No adverse reactions aside from a bit of tenderness in my arm. The process was so effortless. Believing all will go well for you.

Great!!! In Italy we are way behind. My daughter, with all ger health issues, has her foist shot on the 9th. We, as living together, will be able of having ours hopefully not much later - we'll be able to reserve it after the 6th.
All "normally healthy people" at the moment are waiting ...

Got my first shot today - the Moderna vaccine - and also got an appt for the 2nd shot.

The rollout of the vaccine has been difficult in most places from what I have read.

Biden has helped "encourage" the state governments to get their act together. Here in Mass. the main difficulty for me was getting the appointment - hopefully now the pre-registration website will help with that for others as it did for me. Once I got my appt., the rest of the process was very easy & smooth.

So, for one of my Challenges, I've got to read 'To the Lighthouse', 'Mrs Dalloway' and 'Orlando' - but which one should I start with??

Any recommendations/comments please?!

Finally I managed to have one for me, my husband and son - only because of the frail health condition of my daughter, since "normally healthy people will get their shot here not befor the end of this Summer.
I'm having AstraZeneca - probably! - the beginning of May, first shot. In July the second

message 2177: by Steve (new)

Steve Bigler | 436 comments Kim, I enjoyed each of the Virginia Woolf novels you mention, and you can’t really go wrong in any order since they are each completely self-contained. Everyone has their own preferences, but my favorite is definitely To the Lighthouse, a book that has stayed with me for a long time. I would start with that one. I hope you enjoy these books that each wrap you up in the author’s imagination.

Matthew Main Hi all. I'm relatively new to these discussion groups, I'll try not to make any social blunders. I'm just looking to talk books and get good book suggestions. I pretty much read anything and always looking for ideas to add to my library.

Petra | 3324 comments Laura, that's good news! I'm glad that your family will be protected.

Kim, I've read 2 books by Virginia Woolf but none of those that you mentioned. As Steve says, her books do seem to be self contained, so you can read them in any order. Her writing is really wonderful.

Welcome, Matthew! You'll find plenty of good book suggestions here.

Hopefully it won't start Marta's illness again! But if all goes as it should we'll be free again by the end of July - which it looks like a miracle as things are going in Italy

Welcome Matthew! I also read lots of different kinds of books though mysteries & sci fi/fantasy are staples of my reading diet. Do you have a favorite genre?

message 2182: by Karin (new)

Karin Welcome, Matthew. I am here sort of regularly when not wrapped up in some intense reading game.

I read a variety of genres, and sometimes more obscure or lesser known books along with more popular ones.

Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments For my birthday tomorrow we are going to Jerusalem. We haven't been for so long I am really looking forward to it.
The only 'hiccup' is that tomorrow they are forecasting 'unseasonably hot weather' 36-38C!!!
I have had to dig out all my summer clothes. Fortunately today they dropped the requirement to wear masks outdoors so my glasses won't mist up and block my views of the sights.

message 2194: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma Has anyone else seen the new Beta pages that Goodreads is testing for book pages? Personally, I think they're abysmal. They look like they're designed for phones and small touch devices.

If you don't know what I mean, go to the page for any book and look at the top for a small banner that says:

"Goodreads is testing a new design for this page, and we’d love your feedback. Check out the new book page here."

The word "here" is a link to the same page in the new format.

Their link for feedback doesn't work if your mail app isn't on your device, so I'm told you can email your opinons. I hope this works:

gr-book-beta-feedback (at) goodreads (dot) com

Replace the (at) and the (dot) with @ and .

Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments And I'm back.
We had a lovely time in Jerusalem. A little tanned from the heat but nothing worse.
We didn't do a lot of touristy things because the aim was relaxation. But we did visit the market at Mahane Yehuda (and found some yummy things to eat) and we escaped the heat by taking a tour of the Western Wall Tunnels.
While waiting for our tour we took a look through the Old City but most of the shops were still shuttered and the alleyways disconcertingly uncrowded.

They are very unpopular with everyone I know who has discussed them. I have been unable to give feedback, but so far haven't had to use it on my desktop and hope I never have to.

One of the reasons I prefer desktops or laptops is because I prefer a larger screen with pages designed for them and don't care for small device formats (plus they give me headaches and I shop carefully for monitors and TVs).

With my husband we were planning to come to Israel for tourism right before this pandemic disaster. Hopefully we'll manage to come in a year or two...

message 2200: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimborams) | 511 comments So sad to see that Larry McMurtry - the author of epic novels such as Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment, the Brokeback Mountain screenplay and the book that went on to become the film 'Hud' - died of heart failure last month.

His book Lonesome Dove, which fittingly won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986, is one of my all-time favourite books and and was lauded by 'USA Today': 'If you read only one Western [cowboy] novel in your life, read this one', a sentiment with which I totally agree!

He will be sadly missed but he has left a legacy to all book-lovers in the shape of his brilliant writing.
