It was exciting, sad, triumphant, bittersweet- I could go on ...
My sister said, “Wow what a roller coaster” and she doesn’t usually go to live or dance performances.

Welcome back, we missed you. I’m sorry to hear about the change thrust upon you, but I’m glad you are enjoying well-earned time off.

It's great to see you back!

Glad to hear your forced retirement has turned out for the best and that your library survived the storm..

The operation went well thank you, she's doing good and is recovering very well.

No, she got out the next day and is home with us. I think with everything going on, the hospitals are trying to get patients home as quickly as possible.

It's a lot more restful to recuperate at home, IMO, and I have had surgery before :) Maybe not the same kind (not sure what your sister had), but unless you have loud little children who want to be with you all of the time and keep you awake when you need to sleep, home is better.

That is true, I meant that we don't think she got the physio she needed, as she had a hip replacement. She's currently struggling with that at the minute. I know from past experience it is a lot better to rest at home, it's not the same in hospital when you're dealing with the bright lights and sterile environment.

I was living in another state at the time and came home for a while to help out while mom was recuperating. At that time, a physical therapist came to the house to help her about 3 times a week starting about 2 weeks after the operation (but it was over 20 years ago so my memory of the exact details is fuzzy).
I am guessing that currently home visits by therapists are not happening. Did they give your sister exercises to do or something like that?

It's a lot ..."
Oh, yes, a hip replacement requires a lot of physiotherapy! Did they teach you ore anyone in the house how to do any of this? I remember when my mother-in-law had a hip replacement and she did NOT like anyone coming to visit when she was having this. BUT she was in her eighties and didn't start it right away. She lives out of state but was up visiting along with my sister-in-law so was in the hospital here for some time after the surgery. (she tripped on something getting out of a car--not ours--nd broke it, she didn't have it break and then fall).

Oh Ruth that is so scary for you. Sending a big virtual hug and all my thoughts and prayers. You and your sister are true heroes please stay safe and know that you have many friends in this group.

I'm so sorry, Ruth. I hope it all goes well. Stay positive. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Ruth, you must be so worried right now. I'm glad for this positive news about your sister, and I hope things with your mother continue to take this turn in the positive direction. I will be praying for them.

Hello everyone, I have not been around on any social media for a long time as my partner had a severe stroke last year. It was touch and go for a while, and he was completely paralyzed on the right side for the first couple weeks after leaving the ICU, but he has been slowly improving over many months. It was quite a shock as neither of us are of an age where we were thinking about things like strokes yet, but in the past months of rehab, we have met people in their 20s and 30s in recovery; so I guess they can strike at any age.
I spent what seemed like much of last year in hospitals as just after being discharged from the stroke after a month, he had a reaction to the medicines he was on, and we went back into hospital again for another month with severe intenstinal bleeding. I will spare you the gory details. Finally, things are settling down. And as bad as this coronavirus thing is, the one good thing for me is that I am working from home so it is much easier to juggle his therapy, exercises, and doctor appointments with my job. He still doesn't have use of the right hand yet, but around the house, he is quite independent now moving with a cane.
I hope everyone in the group is holding up well in these crazy times that have swept the world with the coronavirus! Are most of you who are not retired working from home now? How is everyone coping?

That's awful, Greg. I'm really sorry to hear that. Has the hospital given your partner something for the bleeding? That happened to my dad about a year and a half after his accident, the doctor had him so much medication but provided nothing to protect the lining of his stomach.
It's scary how it can happen to young people as well, just as I am writing this post, I checked Facebook to see one of my old school friend's brother had recently suffered a stroke as well. I'm so glad to hear your partner is recovering, I had been wondering where you had gotten to.
I am still going to work, not as often but they've finally sorted out it issues so I should be able to work from home after next week.

Thanks Alannah, glad your work is getting things sorted so you can work from home!
And yes, it seems that the mix of post-stroke medications kicked off an inflammatory reaction. I won't horrify you with the details, but there was a tremendous amount of blood, more blood than stool. In the hospital, he was on IV steroids for a while, and after a while of IV steroids, they transitioned him to a mix of pill-based steroids and a medicine that is usually used for Crohn's disease. He was on steroids for a few months, but those have now been tapered down, and he just continues the other Crohn's medication. In a couple months they will do a repeat colonoscopy and see if they can taper that medicine as well. Currently, he has no gastrointestinal symptoms. The symptoms pretty much cleared up by the time we discharged from the hospital the second time. But, I'm really glad that we're off the steroids too now because the high doses of those were starting to cause other side effects and medical problems. It has really been quite a saga.
Of course, the physical and occupational therapy are much more limited now with the coronavirus lockdown, but we do have some therapists coming in for a limited amount of time, and we're doing a lot of exercises together to keep things from moving backward until the therapy day program reopens.
I'm just hoping people can be careful and patient with the lockdown so that the disease spread slows enough that the hospital can re-open their day therapy program soon. They are not going to open it again until cases in the area begin to drop, and it's tough for that to happen if too many people are gathering. We're depending on the mercy of the kindness of strangers for that I guess, as many people are.

Sadly, I saw this too late. I hope it went well! I can't find any video there now.

That is a hard thing to go through at any age. I have known people who had strokes at younger ages, but it is still a shock when that happens.
I have missed having you here.
Thanks Petra, Karin, Kathleen, Nancy! I have missed everyone too. I'm not sure how much reading I'll be able to fit in with my "new normal", but I certainly hope to join in on some of the reads.
How are you all adjusting to the Coronavirus situation?
If I remember correctly, the four of you are from the US and Canada, though I guess most of the world has issues with Coronavirus now.
I hope you have the supplies you need, and that you're all hanging in there!
