B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Karin, we did get all the money we were due so that is something.

Laura, yes, if we had waited for the other guy's insurance to pay us, I would have not lost my good driver's rating but I needed a car pretty quickly.

Yes, as will she, and ideally she'll have some of it left over to help pay her car insurance! I just don't think they can go higher than the highest (I hope) if it's not her fault and hope it only delays her discounts by that 3 years.

No no, this is the same in Italy: you can use the other driver insurance, but still if it's not your fault you are not penalised!

message 1754: by Karin (new)

Karin Someone told me yesterday that apparently you can appeal auto insurance rate hikes when you are not at fault, but it costs $50. I don't remember where he said to do this, but I'm going to ask him again if her rate is raised.

message 1755: by Joan (new)

Joan I’ve a friend who is a risk analyst for an insurance company. She tells me that, in New York, at her company, if the other driver is completely at fault the rates of the blameless driver do not rise, however:
If an innocent driver gets hit several times their rates will rise because the insurance company considers them a risk. She gave as an example a driver whose parked car is hit several times. The company assumes the driver is parking in a high risk area.
She also said the companies often assume that even innocent drivers could have done something to avoid the collision and so often don’t assign 100% blame to either driver.

I don’t think she enjoys that side of her work, though she enjoys crunching numbers and data analysis. she studied systems analysis at college.

Now that makes sense. I tell my kids that when driving one always has to assume that all the other driver's out there are idiots (even though that's not true), to help them remember to drive DEFENSIVELY. Also, to SHARE the road! I have a list of driving pet peeves, such as when people follow too close (and where I live now this is common--when I say how much space I leave most people say they don't because otherwise people will cut in front of them--HELLO, this means people can change lanes safely. There are so many other things--I think it's too easy to get and keep a license in the States--it's a bit harder now in my home province but but it used to be way too easy.

Some drivers might never be technically at fault, but if they have too many accidents one has to wonder if they are smart drivers. My favourite incident is the time that my light turned green and I took a look to the right before moving, avoiding a collision that would have been 100 percent the other driver's fault (sailing through a light that was red before she got to the intersection), but also saving my kids from major injury and also my van.

Karin What a relief--I thought I'd forgotten to enter my pages for the readathon and a. I'm a week early and b. I don't even know if we're doing one for June. What was I thinking???

message 1758: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) I've just found among my friends a person that I'm sure I've never friended. I noticed because the person has a bizarre name, so I went to see her profile and noticed we don't have any friends in common, aren't in the same groups (actually, she's in no group at all), and read very different books. Has anything of the kind ever happened to any of you?

message 1759: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) Marina- That has never happened to me but you can change your username and drop out of groups. Maybe both things happened and you knew her at one point. I do have friends, especially from high school, on Facebook that I don’t know and not sure why they sent me friend requests.

message 1760: by Karin (new)

Karin I was just wondering how I got one of my GR friends--he has over 3000 GR friends and we aren't in any of the same groups now or ever, BUT we might have once been in the same group and both have left it. I saw he had over 1000 likes on a book update of his and thought I'd better check.

message 1761: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Pam, you're right, but this person looked weird to me. It seems like she was advertising the fact that she's a language teacher. I really don't think I've ever known her. I don't want to flag her profile because I can't be 100% sure it's a spam account.

message 1762: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Marina, I got that person on my Friends Accept/Ignore thread but I thought she looked a bit suss; either that, or she was really big-noting herself. I clicked Ignore.

Nicole (book.quill) (nbolinpin) This seems like a decent place to talk about this: are there any holidays or significant dates in your books that you'd like mention? I'm creating a holiday calendar for all fandoms, and want to know if anyone has some lesser known ones to add?

Think "Battle of Hogwarts" or "Towel Day" or "Buffy Summer's Birthday"

I find some people are able to find me and friend request through the book reviews I've written, most of the time it's my netgalley so I get a few authors contacting me hoping I will buy their book and review it.

A part Bloomsday you mean? ;)
A part from Joyce, I LOVE Towel Day, the 25th of May: I've liked The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and I find funny going around with a towel on that day - possibly with the writing "Don't Panik"!

I think it depends on the computer, while I was writing the post I realised I can't check my comments that way on my work computer so I hope I made sense by saying to go to the members pages and check that way, which you have done.

dely | 5214 comments I haven't been a lot around lately because life has been busy: a lot of work (and a new project will start next Monday), then I've been away for a vacation and then my son arrived for the summer vacations (he will leave again in August). I stopped following nearly all the discussions in several groups, keeping the discussions I follow to the strictly necessary.

I hope everone is fine though I remember there have been some users with health issues. I'm fine, only busy and tired and when I have some free time.... well, I try to read and stay less on social networks :D

message 1785: by Esther (last edited Aug 25, 2019 05:13AM) (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments I talked to my parents last week and they sounded unwell with colds etc so I popped over for a chat.
Then my mother tells me that my Dad had passed out twice during the week. We only live over the road but she decided not to call me because 'I didn't want to disturb you in the middle of the night.'!!!!!
They weren't interested in going to emergency care and he does suffer from dizzy spells but this seems much more serious so I insisted they go to their Dr first thing. Now my Dad is at the hospital getting checked over. We will see what they say.

In other news last week we were notified that the jeep trip in Georgia we had booked for September 10th won't be taking place because not enough people have signed up.
DH decided that inside of taking another adventure trip he wanted to laze around in a fancy hotel!
So I spent the weekend looking for holiday packages with the dates we have booked holiday from work. We could change the dates but with Jewish New Year coming we would have to postpone until late October - a bit chilly!!
I am looking forward to the trip but we will to take out cancellation insurance in case I need to stay home for my Dad.

message 1786: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Esther, so sorry about your dad! I hope he'll get better very soon.

message 1787: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 756 comments Esther I hope your Dad is going to be alright and the figure out what is going on with him.
I am on vacation this week and am just relaxing and doing some reading and an Avengers movie marathon. I've been a bit depressed lately and so I've been avoiding the news because it just makes me anxious and more depressed and have been staying off Facebook for the same reason. just trying to limit stress in my life right now.

message 1788: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Ruth, enjoy your vacation and try not to stress. I know I have to limit stress too at times, and I do exactly as you do. We do need a break sometimes, so we don't feel overwhelmed.

message 1791: by Esther (last edited Sep 01, 2019 10:39PM) (new)

Esther (eshchory) | 1368 comments Thanks for all the wishes for my Dad. The hospital has done a load of tests on him and found nothing wrong but they still won't let him go home.
I think he was just sufferring from exhaustion after dealing with the cold/infection. My mother isn't someone who likes to see people sitting around - she always has some tidying/cleaning project on the go.
Anyway at first resting all day in hospital was good for him but now he is getting bored and my mum is also feeling ill but she can't get to the Dr on her own.
DH and I already have long workdays (about 13hrs out of the house) , then we have been visiting my Dad every evening and I also go round to my mother so she doesn't feel lonely and now I have to work out when I can take time off work to get her to the Dr.
By the time we go on our holiday we are going to need it!

Marina (sonnenbarke) I've found a pretty interesting article about Goodreads, although I don't agree with most of the things its author says: https://onezero.medium.com/almost-eve... What do you all think about it?

message 1796: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Marina, I read the article. She admits she spoke to 18, ONLY 18 people before writing this article. With a membership in the millions, that is not a fair number to survey.

I hate it when a person does something like this. Yes, GR has it's problems, the search engine could be improved, there could be a DNF choice. BUT you can search by the author if the book won't come up, AND you can add you own DNF choice to the GR exclusive shelves.

message 1797: by Joan (new)

Joan Very interesting article Marina. It put into words what I had been feeling. Although I enjoy reading the posts by my GR friends, I don’t think of Goodreads as a reliable source for information, it seems to be a mess of crowd-sourced misinformation, hype and myth. Many of the book and author descriptions are obviously poorly written so who knows who created them.
As the article points out, Amazon can afford to do better.

It’s odd, if we went to a brick & mortar store with as many poor-quality products as Amazon, we’d never go back. But the on-line behemoths have almost convinced us they are not responsible for quality.
