Joan Has anyone tried a kneeling chair? I’d appreciate your thoughts and recommendations.

I've never tried that Joan. Is there a health advantage to "sitting" that way?

I have just tried one out for a few minutes years ago. It was a bit too different from what I am used to for me!

@Greg, it is supposed to be better for your back as you can't slouch (one reason it seemed uncomfortable to me!).

Ah, that makes sense! At the office across from us, they have some of those standing desks - I get tired just looking at them. :)

message 106: by Joan (new)

Joan Greg, I don’t think it is healthier, but they claim to relieve lower back pain. I’m uncomfortable sitting or lying down right now but I’m tired of standing and pacing.
I do wish I could hang like a bat!

message 107: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ We just got those standing desks, actually they can go up or down for sitting or standing. I love it, being able to stand sometimes instead of sitting is wonderful. The kneeling chair though I have never heard of. Off to find a picture.

Haha, that made me laugh about the hanging like a bat, though I know pain is no joke. I hope the chair helps you Joan!

Roger I got just a little tired of reading such with serous books. Took a break with murder mystery's for awhile. OK enough of a break. OK now back to reading those books on my reading list.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Joan, we had them at work for those who wanted them. I found them good, once you got used to them. I lay on the lounge floor yesterday morning for an hour because of lwr bk pain, then did my exercises, took two Panadeine Extra (paracetamol with small amount of codeine). As I get older, my back seems weaker and the pain more prevalent.

Perhaps ginger cats produce the highest amount of dander.

I do this all the time - intersperse my serious books with mysteries or sci fi/fantasy books. What mystery did you read? And which serious books are you reading?

We have roasted and salted the seeds before - very tasty when salted right! But nowadays I am just too busy sadly. I keep hoping this work project will settle down soon!

What a pain! You cannot cook Often the plumbing also needs electricity. What temperature do you have? I hope you are not freezing. We are told we might have snow today.......

message 122: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Greg, well less is better. Try not to get all stressed out.

message 123: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 755 comments Just got back and my electricity is back on. Yippee!!!. Chrisse I am luckier than some because I have a gas stove so cooking is no problem. I also have an old fashioned gas space heater in my apt so even if I lose electricity I would still have heat. I have not lit the pilot on it yet though. Will have to get colder before I do that. Right now it's about 51 out, though I heard it is supposed to go into the 30's at night sometime this week. I am just glad the power is back on so I can watch this week's episode of the Walking Dead. Priorities. lol

message 124: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Ruth, I am so happy for you. YAY! Phew. Good that you have gas too.

I am laughing about your priorities; TV I mean.

I looked it up, and one study found that the darker a cat, the higher the incidence of allerges https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/0....

Usually, a cat with long hair produces more (not sure if it is because it holds more pollen, etc in it).

But, and I think this might be the most accurate thing I read, many experts state that individual cats vary in how much dander they produce. But it's not only dander that can cause allergies, of course.

http://www.petmd.com/cat/wellness/evr...

But if I were a betting person, I'd bet there are a very few people allergic to totally different proteins.

We have had lots of trick or treaters tonight! So much fun being a part of making the neighbors' families happy. I remember doing this with Dylan years ago too - that makes it even more fun!

This is my first Halloween in a house. So much better than the gated apartment was! :)

What a good feeling it must be! Here children don't come. I don't celebrate Halloween neither, it isn't part of our culture so I don't feel close to this celebration. But I'm sure you have a lot of fun there, above all children. Yesterday an American friend shared the pics of her granddaughters and they were so cute and so happy!

message 132: by Angela M (new)

Angela M We don’t get any kids trick or treating so our Halloween was centered around our grandkids. We went to their houses to see them in their costumes and of course deliver the treat bags I made for them. Fun to see how excited they were !

It's awful and scary. And it's so difficult to work out how it can be stopped as they are using such available things like cars and vans

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Marina, gorgeous story. I rescued my Poppy, a feral kitten, from down a storm drain and she was ferocious whenever I tried to pat her too. I knew she'd be 'put down' if I took her to the animal shelter. She, too, just wanted the affection of my other cat who, sadly, hated her. Four years on, they are still not friends but Poppy will now sit on my lap when I'm reading or watching television.

Sweet! But why do shelters suppress feral cats? It was written also in the article linked by Marina. Shouldn't a shelter help animals?

message 148: by B the BookAddict (last edited Nov 04, 2017 12:45PM) (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments In Australian shelters, it is simply the pure excess in numbers of hurt, stray or unwanted cats that makes the time needed to rehabilitate a feral cat untenable.

If everybody got their cats desexed or did not dump unwanted cats, there would eventually be no feral cats. (You can tell I used to work at a shelter! )

Yes, that is true in some US shelters as well. At some shelters, if an animal doesn't get adopted in a certain amount of time, the animal is euthanized.

message 150: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments Bette and Greg, this is really sad. Here in Italy we have "cat-ladies" that take care of feral cats. There are some cat colonies with some simple and small shelters and everyday these cat ladies bring some food. If a cat is ill, and they aren't able to take it, then they call the veterinary service of the local health center who sends the dog catcher (though it's a cat). They know how to take them (though it isn't nice to see! One day I wanted to beat such a dog catcher and he answered that he knows his job, I don't have to worry.) but at least then they can be cured by the veterinary service or by a "recognized" animal association. These cat ladies are sometimes helped by recognized animal associations or by the municipality, but not always.
