Just tried to get mine from the doctor's, they won't give me it because I'm 'not at risk', despite getting the flu for the last four years. Going to have to find a pharmacy that will give me it.

I think it is. I think you have to over 60 or an asthma sufferer or cancer sufferer or have to either work in a hospital or a care home to receive it.

Angela M In the US the Center for Disease Control recommended that everyone 6 months of age and older get a flu shot. The shots are readily available at Doctors’s offices and pharmacies. Most health insurance plans cover the cost .

According to the receptionist, the NHS here will only cover those at risk and send out what is needed when people responded to letters they are sent so they very rarely have any spare. I think if you want one here, I will have to pay but thankfully they're not that dear. I'm going to go into a pharmacy before work and ask about it tomorrow.

Angela M Alannah, I thought it might have something to do with supply. Good luck ! I hope you can get
one from the pharmacy. That’s where my husband and I got ours.

Do we have it in a nasal spray? When I finally start getting flu vaccinations, and have a target year in mind for this, I prefer that to a needle.

Good, if adults get that option I'll start getting it far sooner. I avoid needles when at all possible, even at my age. If the person hits a nerve they HURT, although the last time I had a test she missed them and it barely hurt at all. There is no way they can see your nerves...(yes, I am one who prefers to be cognizant and awake during surgery--100 percent mass of contradictions!)

Thanks! I am not planning to get one this year. I have never had any complications from the flu and have never been laid up in bed with it, either, which is why I'm waiting until I hit a certain age. My parents were never laid up with it until they were in their 70s, but I don't plan to wait that long to get the vaccination. It would interfere with my pro-vaccination stance. I won't even touch on that soapbox issue other than to say that my kids had all the ones offered although 1 or 2 were only so they could go to public high school and that I get my 10 year booster...

Yes, Angela, I think you are correct about the supply. Could it also be that if a person does not get the flu shot and gets the flu, the body will create it's own natural antibodies against the flu thus negating the need for the injection in future?

message 1315: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Bette, I think the vaccine changes from year to year because of how quickly the virus changes so a new one shot is needed every year.

message 1316: by Greg (new)

Greg | 8316 comments Mod
I think Angela is right Bette. Having founght off one strain of the flu doesn't necessarily protect from another strain (next year's strain). But I have heard that older flu shots (or former flu illnesses) can provide a little resistance, just not nearly as much resistance as the antibodies for the new, current flu strain.

Karin Angela M wrote: "Bette, I think the vaccine changes from year to year because of how quickly the virus changes so a new one shot is needed every year."

Yes, this is correct. There are many flus out and about all of the time, but they try to prediction which bad one will be out and about and make a vaccine for that. Due to mutations and changes in flu viruses in humans, birds and swine (since bird & swine flus can and do crossover to humans), this is an ongoing process.

This is much harder than something like the polio vaccine given all the changes that are continually going on.

Joan I procrastinated just a little too long. I got my flu shot Saturday but spent Friday with a friend who didn’t know she had the flu. She got sick Saturday and it hit me on Monday. I had forgotten how exhausting the flu is and today I’ve broken out in a rash, seems strange.
Has anyone else every had a rash with Flu?

message 1322: by Tamara (new)

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1410 comments Joan, I've heard you can get a rash near the injection site. But if the rash is not localized to that area, you might be better off checking with your doctor. You may be having an allergic reaction to the shot.

Yes, get the rash checked--it's not a flu symptom. In addition to things already listed, it can also be part of meningitis which can start off just like the flu.

Unfortunately, I have, the worst was in 2016. I was in bed for about ten days with the flu and then took something called post-viral fatigue which affected my back, I was in great pain with it and couldn't walk, there were days I was crawling. I had a nightmare experience with countless who refused to sign me off work and I was going home every day in tears and ended up with no money for a couple of months. I never want to go through that again. I've had the flu every year since 2014 and I end up with bed unable to do anything at all.

Wow! That's hard and I can see why you have one every year. I am still waiting; I always check with the suggestions from Canada, since that's where I'm from (dual citizen now). I don't fit any of the criteria for having to take it there, so coupling that with both my and my family's health history (parents, birth aunts & uncles, birth siblings, spouse, children etc) I am waiting :) until sometime over age 60 (perhaps age 65 which is the age I saw there, but I'll see because my husband will hit 65 before I do and then I may get it for his sake since he gets hit with things).

Karin In addition the the tragedy in PA yesterday, my son and I saw smoke spewing into the sky from a large fire when we went to Boston yesterday. Thankfully, there were no casualties, but about 70 college students from three different universities/colleges now have no housing. It was an apartment building that catered to college students (no one else would want to live there due to its proximity to two colleges--Boston is a college town rife with them). Students from a neighbouring building have also been evacuated as the winds drove the fire into the top floors of that building. 9 people were sent by ambulance to a hospital but it looks like there are no life threatening injuries.

Joan Dely, I’m much better thanks. It’s hard to feel good on a day like today with the evil evident in Pittsburgh, Yemen, the bomber from Miami - it’s hard to remember that Love conquers all, eventually.

Karin - that’s terrible for those students - tough for anyone but especially when they are just practicing independent living. Of course it brought to mind the Grenfall Towers survivors. I read they have created a cookbook:

I feel the same and it is because of this that I try to stay away from news. There would be to cry and be sad every day for people tortured or been killed because of another religion/skin color/sexual orientation/country/environmental disasters/wars/rapes/ etc. It's really heartbreaking and makes me feel really bad.

Joan Dely, like you I try not to get overwhelmed, but pay enough attention to effectively stamp out what fires I can. Elie Wiesel is certainly an inspiration for how average people can act today.

About 3 weeks ago two of the young women I now work with made some racist jokes - it was hard to object, but I did, gently. One of them let me know afterwards that NOBODY had ever taught them that civilized people don’t think that way. She thought it was “like farting, something everyone does but no one talks about”.

I have a neighbor that is a little bit a racist. She is usually a lovely woman, I never had problems with her, but once she said that our intercome seems that of Albanians (to say that it isn't nice to see). Then an African moved to live in the building and she complaint about it. Today, coming to ask me an egg, we have seen a family of South Americans going up the stair to see a flat that is on sale. She said she hopes they won't buy it. I told her, as with the African neighbor, that it is important that they are good people. And then I asked her about her problems and complaints with the white and Italian neighbors (she has several unsolved problems with at least two Italian neighbors). I hope she will understand it that kindness has nothing to do with our nationality.
I don't like how Italy and Italians are becoming. I hear too often of aggressions to foreigners. I don't like to see how Italians are becoming racists (sadly thanks to our new elected politicians, above all one). Ok, usually it has been us that emigrated and we have never been colonizers, so we aren't used to see other people in Italy (except tourists), but we have to get used to changes.

Wow--that cookbook is something!

Thankfully no casualties here and the college communities and city are rallying to help, but I am sure that this is still devastating for those who lost all of their things in their fire and their sense of security. Some in the building next door may well get to move back in once their building has been properly inspected and given the all-clear.

I am very thankful that if it was going to happen (looks like it was) that it happened in the afternoon when many were out and people were mostly awake as it's much easier to stay sharp when not roused from the depths of sleep.
