B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Rowena is listed as a Moderator but she has been 'missing in action' for simply ages. I often wonder where she is.

I always presume Jenny is away on tour with the dance company and simply too busy to attend here. I know she was great friends with Gill and hope that that is not keeping her away. Perhaps GR reminds her too much of Gill.

message 1252: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I'll let Rowena know that she's been missed here. I know someone close to her passed away in mid-year and then she changed jobs.

It wasn't great to meet you too, Alice! Thank you for reminding me to check in on the group. It's been a tough year with lots of emotional changes, which is why I had to step away for a while, but I'm getting back into my reading again so hopefully I'll be around more :)

Thank you friends for brightening my day.

And I've also seen the church of S Antonio di Ranverso, the one you've posted here some times ago, that I had only seen from outside. The painting in the Sagrestia by Jaquerio is I think breath taking!

Ah, the college tours! What a great photo!

I hope that goes well for you along with all of the application processes. I have visited Far More Campuses than I ever thought I would, and am happy to have a break now until my son has to scout out his post-grad location (but he's only a freshman, so we have time).

message 1268: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ I've been there Greg, loved Flagstaff and loved the campus too.

So glad to hear from you, Rowena.

Everyone in the South who will be effected but Michael, stay safe. Looks horrific on television.

Hard to believe there is another strong hurricane making landfall already. At least they think it will not linger over land as the one in the Carolinas did.

I hope the damage is as minimal as it can be.

I've heard about it in the news. Now the rain moved this way and let's hope nothing will happen.
I've heard also about France, Spain, etc. Deaths also there because of the rain and floods.

message 1272: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Just popping in to share about our friends ...

Jenny is fine, and as you suspected Bette, very committed to her dance group touring. I see regular posts from her elsewhere - the most recent one was yesterday :) She is very busy! Jenny told me a while ago that she hasn't been on Goodreads for ages, and the last update here is from May.

I'm also in regular contact with Terri. Her life has also changed quite a bit. You probably know from what she said, that she is heavily involved in other projects, to do with social conditions and politics. Her health the last time we "spoke" was as it always has been, but she is finding it hard to settle to reading, and I think she just decided something had to go. She has happy memories of Goodreads, and as Greg says, we can hope she may return some day, when her mind is less taken up with issues which are important to her.

Karin We have a flash flood watch starting right now but it's not raining here yet. As long as I take the good roads I will be fine, but I HAVE to travel--but no hurricane coming here, thankfully, as we are too far north and there hasn't been one here in the entire 25 years I've lived here (but we did have superstorm Sandy).

I am always happy when people check in safe here, on FB or wherever. I heard a woman who called into a radio station we live in who was driving in the opposite of a convoy of power trucks heading to the areas hit by the hurricane in the States--I am so grateful to all who go in to help after disasters.

Stay safe!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Thanks for the update on Terri, Jean. From her 4th June post, I gathered that current affairs and the like were becoming so important to her. Just happy to hear it's not her health or the death of her son which are consuming her.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Today is the 16th anniversary of the bombings in Bali which killed 88 of my fellow Australians. Bali was always the go-to place for Australians for holidays and good times. The attack killed 202 people (including 88 Australians, 38 Indonesians, and people of more than 20 other nationalities). A further 209 people were injured. Various members of Jemaah Islamiyah, a violent Islamist group, were convicted in relation to the bombings, including three individuals who were sentenced to death.

It has been a really sad event. I've read about it only recently in a book I've read: Il male inutile: Dal Kosovo a Timor Est, dal Chiapas a Bali, le testimonianze di un reporter di guerra. There will be shortly an English translation and it is a very interesting book. It contains reportages written by a war reporter and he talks also about that attack. The interesting side of this book, is that the author talks about less known events (at least, less know here by us) or wars that are still going on but no one knows about them or no one cares.

message 1290: by Karin (new)

Karin Thanks--my drive was safe and there were no accidents on my route. My voice teacher was delayed by an accident on a drive in the city, though, but I'm not sure if it was related to the storm. There were many major delays for outgoing traffic, but due to the weather inbound was light, thankfully, and I had to go (not just for my lesson and the class, but it's one of my son's later nights and it means a later, different commuter bus, etc, etc.)
