I hope that it isn't due to afib heart problems Laura -- that is one of the things that they are monitoring my mother for because of her stroke. Fingers crossed that everything turns out okay & she gets released from the hospital soon.

message 755: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Laura, will pray for your cousin. Such a terrible thing, she has had more than her fair share of misfortune. Nice that you can be there to help her, as Angela said a caring family is key. Hugs!!

Marina (sonnenbarke) Laura, sorry to hear that. I hope she has a speedy recovery and that the doctors can prevent new strokes.

That sounds very worrying. Send my best wishes for the docs to discover the source of the problem so she can make a full recovery.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Hi all, after a long long absence I am carefully dipping my toes back into Goodreads' waters, and into this group which has always been my GR home. I've been gone so long, I even struggled to navigate my way to the group at first ;)

So here's a timid hallo, I hope you've all been well. :)

Laura, I am really sorry for the scare that must have been, I hope she gets well soon, and that they find out quickly what caused it.

Laura - I'm sorry to hear about your cousin, I hope she recovers soon

Jenny - So lovely to see you back and posting again, it's been far too long.

message 773: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) I'm quite tired today - I woke up at 7, which is my usual time, but I went to bed around 1am last night, so I didn't get much sleep. That's because I went to Rome yesterday for a medical appointment, and I met my good friend whom I hadn't seen in three months. I was so glad to spend some time with her! She was also very kind because she came even though she was ill with a bad sore throat.

Today we're going to a shop to look for furniture for our bedroom. Apparently choosing furniture for the bedroom is more difficult than the kitchen - at least it's like that for us. Our kitchen should be coming on Monday, I'm so excited that I keep dreaming about it at night, lol! (Actually it's nightmares rather than dreams, I keep worrying about everything!)

message 774: by Jenny (last edited Apr 17, 2018 03:20AM) (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I can relate to furniture related nightmares Marina;) And moving is also really stressful isn't it? Do you have similar tastes in choosing furniture? That helps I imagine.

My current nightmares revolve around gas leaks and other disasters. The house I live in is really old and the landlord doesn't take very good care of it, so now for the umptienth time we are without gas, as they had to shut it off for safety. As everything here runs on gas, we are now without hot water and without the possibilty to cook as we have a gas stove. I already envisage us turning up at random friends' houses, towel and a bunch of vegetables in hand in order shower and eat ;)

message 775: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Jenny, luckily our tastes in furniture are very similar, and yes, that helps a lot ;)

I'm sorry about your problems with gas, I understand because here in Italy everything runs on gas, too, so I know very well that you can do basically nothing without it. I hope the landlord will finally decide to devote some of his time in taking care of your house. Fingers crossed!

That is worrying about the gas, both the lack of it and the ancient infrastructure.
Everything in our house is electric and until recently there were often power cuts (either from thunderstorms, excess demand blowing the transformer or some idiot contractor from the construction down the road cutting the wrong wires!)
I have a propane camping burner to make hot drinks just in case.
Do you have an electric kettle or hot plate?

message 777: by Jenny (last edited Apr 17, 2018 04:15AM) (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Thanks Esther and Marina.
We do have an electric kettle Esther which right about now is my very best friend . And while the hobs of our stove are gas, the oven part is electric. Remembering that just gave me a real 'hooray-moment' :). This stove is fairly new and our old one ran on gas for both oven and hobs so we completely forgot about this possibility last night when wondering how to make warm food.
We pay very little rent which is great but after the heating cut out 4 times this winter for 2 days each, the 3rd gas leak this year and mold which my landlord just wants to paint over I am thinking it might be time to move.

Jenny wrote: "I am thinking it might be time to move. .."
I think you might be right.

I only lived in rented accomodation for a year and that was enough for me. Owning is a lot of responsibility but at least you decide what to prioritize.

That's a lot of problems for just one winter. I think you're right, maybe you should move, even if the rent you currently pay is low. It's not worth it, in my opinion.

message 780: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Jenny, sorry to hear about your utilities problems - I have to say that I agree with Marina that moving might be the best option, even if it is more expensive. I would be worried about potential hazards to both health and safety from just the gas issues but the mold put it over the top for me!

message 781: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments An update on my situation with my mother. Probably I am sharing too much detail but of course, you (the reader of this post) don't have to read it all.

I took my mother to her follow-up visit to the stroke neurologist today and it was very positive in a way -- he basically said that at her age & with her other health problems and the minor nature of her strokes (which apparently all occurred along a single artery) meant that it is unlikely that she would die from a further stroke. He was diplomatic in his phrasing but that was the impression that I got..

So one less thing that I need to worry about & he even said that the afib heart monitoring that had been suggested wasn't necessary.

On the negative side, Mom has become undecided about returning to her condo. I would like her to return but having spoken to the social worker at her nursing home, I am beginning to wonder if that's because it's what is best for her or whether the decision has emotional connotations for me that I have been unaware of (or avoiding). In any case, she won't be going home next week as I had thought.

My brother will be visiting this weekend so hopefully he and I will be able to talk some of this out.

message 782: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Leslie, these decisions are so difficult . I hope that when your brother comes you can decide what is best for your mother. Thinking of you.

message 783: by Pink (new)

Pink Leslie, I'm sure everyone will work out the best option for your Mum. It sounds like she's in the right place and with people who can help her and you, with these decisions. I'm glad to hear her medical news is sounding more positive overall.

Leslie, that's good news about your mom's health though I understand how it's emotionally difficult to think she may not want to return home. I think time to sort out what it brings up for you emotionally and talking it over with your brother will help in sorting out what's best for her and in the mean time it's good to know that right now she's in good hands and hopefully feels well taken care of.

message 785: by Ruth (new)

Ruth | 755 comments Leslie have you asked your Mom why she is undecided about returning to her home? Is she afraid for some reason? Does she not want to be alone?

message 786: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Leslie, perhaps she feels that her health/age is too fragile and she would feel at risk living alone. I understand what an emotional burden this whole situation is for you.

message 787: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments Leslie, I can understand that must be really hard and not something you want to face, but I guess having your brother there will help. I totally understand your wanting to avoid this emotionally, as this is a situation that I with my brothers and sister may well have to face in the next few years...

message 788: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments Ruth wrote: "Leslie have you asked your Mom why she is undecided about returning to her home? Is she afraid for some reason? Does she not want to be alone?"

I have asked but didn't get a very clear response. I guess that I will try to just take it one day at a time as the social worker suggested and see how things proceed.

Thanks for all the support everyone!

Leslie | 16369 comments It looks like spring weather has finally arrived here in New England. The forsythia are blooming and the sun is shining, both of which lift my mood :)

Diane S ☔ Here in the Midwest as well. Sunny and in the sixties. Does cheer one up when the sun is out.

Marina (sonnenbarke) Diane S ☔ wrote: "Does cheer one up when the sun is out."

Yes! Absolutely! We've been having spring temperatures and weather for a while now in Italy, which is great.

Tomorrow it's our most important national holiday over here, so although I'll be working in the morning, I'll take the afternoon off for a long walk with my boyfriend, since we're having such good weather.

Today we finally got our kitchen furniture and it looks so nice! Obviously there had to be a problem, so something is missing and we'll have the whole thing next week, hopefully. But I'm so incredibly happy - it's great to see our soon-to-be home start taking shape. The other rooms are still empty as yet, but we'll do everything in time. We have four months left, so we still have time.

Spring is breaking out here on Long Island, too. We just got home from Charleston, S.C. and I was glad to leave the heat behind.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Currently looking into clinical trials for Eczema which I've had for nearly six years now. Am in the seventh month of a particularly nasty bout where my arms, legs, tops of feet have all been an itching nightmare. Just finished another round of steroids which give me dreadful headaches but still undergoing light therapy which does seems to be somewhat easing the itch. At this rate, I'll try anything!

Gosh, that sounds so painful. I'm really sorry this is happening to you.
I don't know if this helps any, but when my boys were little and got chicken pox, I used to fill the bath tub with warm water and throw in corn starch. They would sit in it until the water got too cold. That seemed to help relieve some of the itching. I don't know if it works with Eczema.
I hope you get to feeling better soon.

message 795: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ My mom has always had eczema pretty bad, she would scratch her arms till they bled. She used to take oatmeal baths, that and steroids. As she has aged though her eczema has decreased and now in her eighties it very seldom manifests. Hope you find a trial that can provide some relief, B.

Marina, glad you are pleased with what you have done so far. Sounds wonderful and nice that you both can take your time.

Sounds miserable B. My husband has excema, too, and flareups are very draining.
Better treatment may be on the horizon- the microbiome has been a hot topic for many excema for more than 10 years. Now it is finally moving into clinical trials- at least it will be as long as The US Administration doesn’t slash bioresearch further, which is a significant danger.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Leslie wrote: "It looks like spring weather has finally arrived here in New England. The forsythia are blooming and the sun is shining, both of which lift my mood :)"

We seem to have gone straight from winter to summer here. Below 0 degrees (Celcius) just a few weeks ago, and then last Sunday we had 26 degrees and just sun all day long. It feels like I've gone from falling asleep with a hot water bottle to warm my feet straigt to curing the blisters that I got from my flip-flops. All nature outside is just exploding into bloom.

B the BookAddict wrote: "Currently looking into clinical trials for Eczema which I've had for nearly six years now. Am in the seventh month of a particularly nasty bout where my arms, legs, tops of feet have all been an it..."

Bette, I really hope you'll find something that helps rather sooner than later. I imagine having to take steroids regularly can also have really unpleasant side effects.

Marina wrote: "Today we finally got our kitchen furniture and it looks so nice! Obviously there had to be a problem, so something is missing and we'll have the whole thing next week, hopefully. ."

Hooray! Well I hope the missing part gets sorted soon. When you say that you still have 4 month left, does this mean you are building the house?

message 800: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments The gas situation in our appartment building unfortunately still isn't sorted, so I've now become very well versed in the contents of take-away menues, as well as in the art of bucket showers. Our poor water cooker must be exhausted. Right now we have a few people taking apart the pipe system in our basement, This hopefully means we shall be able to shower and cook again soon. All available digits crossed.
