Ruth | 755 comments Have not had electricity since yesterday. Thankful for my kindle because at least I can still read. We have power at work so I can recharge my phone and kindle.

Petra | 3324 comments Congratulations, Alannah, and thanks for stepping up as a mod.

Thank you. Leslie, Shirley and Jenny, for all the hard work keeping this group lively. I'm glad to hear that you're all still going to be active here.

message 653: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Hi all, I hope everyone is well. We just got back home from a month in Florida and stopped in Savannah, Georgia for a couple of days. I’ve been checking in but not as active as usual so I hope I haven’t missed too much ! The weather in Florida was fabulous- 80’s and sunny just about every day. Came home to snow on the ground and temperatures over 40 degrees colder ! It was nice to escape it for a while and also to see my sister and my nieces .

message 654: by Angela M (new)

Angela M I’m still quite worried about Terri . I may have missed it if she has posted . I sent her a mail several week ago but haven’t heard back. I don’t want to pry but if she is checking in here I want her to know I’m thinking of her and miss her. Has anyone heard from her ?

message 655: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ No, I was thinking of her too. She hasn't even posted any reviews that I have seen. Very concerned.

Nice to have you back, Angela.

Went and did a big grocery shop early this morning. First time since my hospitalization that I felt able. Three more days of steroids and I will be so glad!

message 656: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Glad you felt good enough to go shopping, Diane. I sent today too . Needed everything after a month .

message 657: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Angela, nice to hear of your fabulous vacation, and skipping the bad weather at home is such a relief. I remember when I used to think snow and cold was fun..........not any more.

There has been no information from Terri. Several of us have been worried.

Diane, when you are able to do ordinary chores, even if they are just ordinary , it does feel GOOD to be getting back on track. I definitely understand what you are talking about. Hope all progresses well.

message 658: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Thanks , Chrissie. The older I get the less I like the cold and snow.

message 659: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Do you ever happen to have days where you seem unable to concentrate on a book and simply prefer not to read and while away the time with something else? It's not a reading slump, in fact I'm very much enjoying the book I'm currently reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but I don't feel like reading too much at once. It's been a couple of days now. I keep browsing Goodreads instead, but seem unable to find something to stick on to.

message 660: by Pink (new)

Pink Yep, all the time lately. Sometimes I'll watch television, but mostly I'll browse goodreads or other book related sources, without actually reading. I think sometimes my brain just needs a different activity.

message 661: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Yes, Marina, I have been experiencing that for ages now. Have begun The Rules of Magic some time ago but have not progressed past pg 253 at the moment.

Nice to see you here again Angela, hope you are well and enjoyed your time in Florida and Georgia. I haven't heard anything about Terri, I think a couple of other people have tried to message her as well.

Yes, I've certainly gone through periods like that before. Right now, I seem to prefer listening to audiobooks and doing something else, probably like playing games on my game, nothing that distracts me though.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments My sister and her husband picked up their new puppy yesterday, a little red brindle English staffie they have christened Shiloh. She is a fat little wriggling mass of puppy delight who spent the day following my sister around. My bil thinks he's No 1 for little Shiloh but but it's definitely my sister. My old doggie looked very unconcerned and laidback upon introductions, honestly, if it doesn't include sleeping these days then Mo is uninterested. Shiloh crawled all over him but he didn't bat an eyelid. Not much was done by anyone of us yesterday after Miss Shiloh arrived.

It happens to me too; I generally binge on some video (either TV or movies) but sometimes play computer games. Then I get those periods where I am reading something that I just can't put down.

Welcome back Angela!

I haven't been keeping as close an eye on things as I used to so I hadn't noticed how long Terri has been missing. I hope that nothing too serious has happened...

Leslie | 16369 comments Ruth wrote: "Have not had electricity since yesterday. Thankful for my kindle because at least I can still read. We have power at work so I can recharge my phone and kindle."

Eek! I hope that by now your power has been restored! My Kindle doesn't have backlighting so I would need a flashlight or candle to read it (though I could probably use its text-to-speech feature in the dark).

Back after Hurricane Sandy (2012), my brother and his family didn't have power for about a week and my sister-in-law used to use the car to recharge her phone. Smart thinking - it would have never occurred to me but now I keep a charger in the car!

Ruth | 755 comments Leslie, I got my power back Sunday morning but we are getting a new storm tomorrow. I just hope we don't lose it again.

It is certainly fun with a new puppy in the house, but there is a lot of work involved too. I think puppies are as cute as they are so you can ignore all the difficulties that arise too. I cannot help but think about about when Oscar was a puppy. In April he will be nine, which is for me totally unbelievable. I love puppies. Have fun Bette. Mo sounds very tolerant, but the elderly ones usually are.

message 672: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Ruth, my fingers are crossed for you. This has been some winter for storms!

I am off for a walk. I do not limp any more.

Marina (sonnenbarke) In case anyone's interested in speculative fiction, I've found an awesome website: http://www.isfdb.org/ Check it out, it lists thousands of authors with information like list of works and their translation in several languages, awards, etc. I can't say speculative fiction is my favorite genre, but this website is a mine of information.

Marina (sonnenbarke) It seems like I keep coming across interesting bookish websites. These are, pretty much like the speculative fiction database I mentioned in post #673, online catalogs/databases dedicated to specific genres, namely:

Horror: http://monsterlibrarian.com/main_page...
Alternate history: http://www.uchronia.net/
Mystery: http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/ind...
Historical fiction: http://www.historicalnovels.info/

I found all of them to be really well done and informative - if you like those genres, check them out :)

message 676: by Joan (new)

Joan Thanks Marina, for rounding them up - you saved me a search.

message 677: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Thanks Marina.

Yesterday saw my sweet sixteen granddaughter preform as Flotsam in her school play The Little Mermaid. The production was very well done, the kids were great.

message 678: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Diane, thanks for telling us. Your/our grandchildren are scarcely children any more. What does that say about us? How old is your oldest grandchild? Glad to hear everything was lovely.

message 679: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ My eldest is 23, my youngest Rue is four months already. Time goes so quickly, seems like she was just born. Thanks for asking Chrissie. What are the ages of yours?

message 681: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 50 comments Hi everyone, it feels like ages since I've been on goodreads let alone on the computer. I was helping to take care of my mother until I got an awful cold and then when I was getting better from that we got a series of storms that knocked out my internet. I just got it back yesterday!
Congratulations to Alannah I know you will do a great job!
Welcome back Angela I probably could use a month in Florida too!
Ruth I hope you didn't lose your power again!
How's your sisters new puppy B? I miss having a dog but my apartment and my job wouldn't be good for a dog or puppy that's why I have a cat!

message 682: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Rebecca, I hope you and your Mom are OK now....and clearly your computer is working again. Welcome back.

message 683: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Rebecca, welcome back to you. It does sound like you could use a vacation. Hope all is well.

Chrissie Thanks, Angela.

Ruth | 755 comments Welcome back Rebecca. I didn't lose power again but we are having our 4th Nor'easter in a month today. This winter just does not want to go away.

message 687: by Joan (new)

Joan Feeling a bit silly.
I tried doing my beginner Tai Chi out in the snow today.
It was actually quite nice, soothing and I heard things I usually overlook - like the sound of snow falling.
I cannot imagine what the neighbors think of me now :-0

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Rebecca, the puppy continues to be super cute, super smart but a huge time waster for us all. Much time is spent simply watching her play.

message 689: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Welcome back Rebecca. Hope your mom is doing better.

Puppies are so cute, love wasting time that way. We had little Ona, puppy borrowing for a few days. She does liven things up.

I don't have much information and we both obviously want to respect her privacy but I have heard briefly of Terri from Jean who had read our earlier posts.

Terri is OK in herself but quite stressed and doesn't feel able to join in goodreads much at the moment.

Obviously, Terri knows she is in our thoughts and we will look forward to having her back when she feels able to. I am sure she won't mind me sharing this to reassure us all a bit that she is OK.
