Craig White | 6727 comments just to be clear, suzy, 'jerusalem' is perhaps the best book i've ever read, 'aye barney' is the 8th in a series of highly entertaining capers involving the hapless barber, barney thompson. lazy posting from me! :)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Ohhh I had already got that ... it is the best Book you've ever read since the last best Book you've ever read - but it's not THE best Book you've ever read because you've read that Book already and that was THE best Book you've ever read ... that's right, isn't?

See? - I'm almost all there, I am ;o>

in pristine of condition and in first of print, for a pitiful 3 poonds! however, as i'm the decent sort, advised them to push up the price of

Tim Franklin | 10953 comments Got lots in the pipeline too. Currently working my way through George R.R. Martin's monumental 'A Song Of Ice & Fire' (the third volume, 'A Storm Of Swords' to be precise) to fill the long night until the final season of Game Of Thrones finally airs next year.

Hopefully before then, the long awaited sixth volume 'The Winds Of Winter' will appear. Long time fans of the books have been waiting nigh on eight years for this one! In-between times, the first of two volumes of Fire And Blood is due out on the 20th November.

Craig White | 6727 comments polished off the satisfying 8th book in the barney thomson octology - still delivering!

now around 8% into the kindle version of

Rob Campbell | 477 comments ** Self-promotion alert **

Today, my 48-page short story "The Mysterious Mr Gooch" is released on Amazon.

It's all part of the build-up to the release of the 2nd book in my trilogy, but the reason I mention it here is that it's a little tale based on a young lad meeting his favourite band, so it might strike a chord with some on here (pun intended).

message 259: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments rob, is it expanded or 'remixed' from the original?

c'mon 99p is 99p! :)

roll up folks! despite his abysmal taste in music, rob does write a good story!

message 260: by Rob (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments No, it's the same old story you read last year, Tech. Please don't feel the need to buy it!

I decided to stick it on Amazon as part of the promotion for book #2.

The film of his "Dirt Road" is showing at GFT on 25th January, appropriately, given the subject matter, as part of Celtic Connections

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It's a very good job that I'm not an obsessed fan of celebrities, Lez ;o>

I could be permanently camped on your Doorstep, with my Camera on stand-by, whilst rummaging through your Wheelie Bins in search of souvenirs!

We had a very famous Radio One DJ as a Neighbour for a few years - and his Address was found out and then leaked online to his fan-base over a year after he had already moved out and down to London.

Fans kept turning up at all hours of the day (and night too) for up to several years afterwards - and some of them would even stand in the Front Garden of his old House and sing love songs ;o>

Re that. I completely forgot to mention Alan Moore was on our local BBC news show a couple of weeks back; making his first film in Northampton. Whether it's up on the iPlayer who knows, but if anyone cares enough search under Look East.

Bit of blurb at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-eng...?

message 285: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments cheers, tim.

glad you're enjoying 'jerusalem', p.s., it's quite magnificent.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beastie-Boys...

about halfway thru' this, which weighs the same as a housebrick! packed with great pictures, it's a tremendously well written, and sometimes touching, account of the beasties career by the surviving members - always indicates who is writing what. worthy of the great reviews it's picking up!

message 286: by Craig White (last edited Jan 02, 2019 08:34PM) (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments an excellent and varied (it even has a cookbook inside) book, pretty much covers everything in the beasties' career, tho' doesn't dwell at all on yauch's illness and death - 'adam got cancer and died', horowitz deeming the subject 'too heavy to write about'. as a one stop shop, however, it's got everything going for it.

message 287: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments a note for nocheese;

The Stornoway Way

remember you said you had a copy sitting - well worth a read, but relatively frustratingly brief and disjointed, more like a series of scenarios without any connecting factors or events leading up to these. however, some of these passages are beautifully written, very emotional even. and you get an ongoing glossary of gaelic words and phrases - a mixed bag!

message 288: by nocheese (new)

nocheese | 6824 comments Cheers, tech. It’s still in the ‘to read’ pile, thanks for the reminder, I will definitely get to it this year, lured by the prospect of beautifully written bits.

message 289: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments it's definitely worthwhile, but not the belter it certainly could have been.

anyhoo, back to my 'pirated' ebook collection,

Mooch

the 2nd in the 'bruno dante' trilogy, fante reads like a contemporary charles bukowski, and there is a real connection between the authors in that bukowski much admired the writing of fante's father, and deemed him a major influence in his own writing. if you enjoy bukowski, this is a no brainer, if you don't know his work, this deals with the seedy underbelly of l.a., the protagonist (very much like bukowski's alter ego, henry chinaski) being an alcoholic making his way in the above town - the parallels are very clear, but fante's books are more like a continuation rather than any kind of plagiarism.

message 290: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments .....and i enjoyed that plenty, so on to the last of the 'bruno dante' trilogy, Spitting Off Tall Buildings, in which our drink soaked, would be writer, anti-hero moves to new york to continue in much the same vein as he did in l.a. found that i have a further novel of his '86'd', and one of his father's (bukowski's 'god'), 'wait until spring, bandini', so i'll give that a belt in due course.

message 291: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments right! get yer £1.99s out - rob's new book, the 2nd in the 'wardens of the black heart' trilogy? is fresh off the (virtual) printer's,

Black Hearts Rising

be the first on your block! i know i am!

message 292: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Oooh you did it AGAIN!!! ;o>

message 293: by Rob (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments Anybody wanting to read "Black Hearts Rising" will have to read book #1, "Monkey Arkwright" first, otherwise it won't make a whole lot of sense (although there is a 500 word-primer at the front of book #2 for the lazy reader!).

Fortunately for such readers, "Monkey Arkwright" will be FREE to download 4th-6th February.

I've only managed to settle down to reading 326 so far and it's taken me 6 years to do that! - LOL!!!

The last 43 Books are ALL entirely down to recommendations from our tech ;o>

EDIT : Oops! - sorry Rob, I forgot to add your Black Hearts Rising to the count ... I now have 759 Books on my Kindle-to-PC ;oO

message 297: by Rob (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments I generally have a list of about 5-10 books that I'm about to buy.
Not trying to put anybody off but before release I read my own Black Hearts Rising 5 times and I'm fed up of it now!!!!!
Nice to get back to other people's books for a while.

Craig White | 6727 comments Birthday Girl

sadly - total rip off! babysitting last night, jnr bade me read his tiny tiny copy - so i did read the 41 tiny tiny pages with big big print - very early on i started to become familiar with the story (released as a single to celebrate murakami's 70th birthday), and it turns out i had read it before in one of his short story collections. poor show. it is a good story, mind, but that's not the point!
