Isabella | 1370 comments I think his suggestion that all this extremism has links to the (general) demise of religion in society has some merit. While I agree that there's definitely a strong political element to it all, there's a vacuum waiting to be filled. Many people want the certainties of religion and where those certainties weaken, something else, (trans rights, anti-vaxxing etc) creeps in and becomes the new orthodoxy for them to espouse. The mob mentality always murmurs, and sometimes acts, against the 'other', with witch hunts, shaming, shunning.

Social media and the mass media in general have made it easy for so-called minorities, and others acting in their name, to hijack the narrative, with anonymous trolling and so on making it possible for them to appear to be the majority opinion.

There have been and still are, terrible injustices against both large and small sections of humanity but this current 'groupthink' seems to be both engineered and exploited by those who have no real interest in actually righting those wrongs.

As a small example, J K Rowling (not someone I've ever warmed to) is in trouble for objecting to an appeal to 'people who menstruate' instead of to 'women'. She has been attacked as transphobic by, among others, stars of her filmed books. No-one, to my knowledge, has pointed out the obvious - that only a very small number of the population comes into that category. For reasons of age, pregnancy, illness, plus (dare I say?) gender, most people don't actually menstruate. As a person long past my fertile years, does that make me 'not a woman'? And if not, what am I?

I hope he's right, that the pendulum will swing back nearer to equilibrium.

'A reform is a correction of abuses; a revolution is a transfer of power.'

Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton

and yes, he is a dead, rich, white male :o)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments One thing I miss about 'zon is the ability to vote a post up. Just that the 'No' button was abused by trolls and folk who din't have the 'nads' to speak up.
Being that I'm not the most articulate, I'll let other folk say stuff and sometimes agree or disagree. A 'Yes' vote for the above in any case.

Sera69 | 1924 comments Ermahgerd! New Meades incoming! Man crush alert!

Thirty years ago Jonathan Meades published a hefty collection of reportorial journalism, essays, criticism, squibs, fictions called Peter Knows What Dick Likes. It quickly acquired cult status. The critic James Woods was moved to write: ‘When journalism is like this, journalism and literature become one.’

This new collection is every bit as rich and every bit as catholic. Hence its title: Pedro and Ricky Come Again. Thirty years older, so no longer boys, but no wiser, and still impervious to good taste and good manners.

From the inexcusability of nationalism and the ubiquitous abuse of the word ‘iconic’, to John Lennon’s shopping lists and the wine they call ‘Black Tower’, the work assembled here demonstrates Meades's unparalleled range and erudition, with pieces on cities, artists, sex, England, concrete, politics and much, much more.

Craig White | 6727 comments yeah, great concept, cleverly undertaken. mostly from reggae's early years at a time when the albums were mixed (or remixed for uk purposes) or recorded in london - a quick photo of the jamaican artist in a london setting - one has to ask why.

message 469: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments finished my alan moore-athon, Watchmen: The Deluxe Edition, V for Vendetta and From Hell, and have to say the man is totally aware of the score! 3 different artists illustrate his genius scripts, each of which are (as far as i'm aware) groundbreaking pieces - i'm knocked out! have the thought of watching the corresponding movies in the same order, but i can't imagine they will measure up. remains to be seen.
although based on fact, 'from hell' is a fictitious take on the jack the ripper murders, and tbh, makes perfect sense as regards the culprit and the police procedures. who knows?

message 470: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments whilst reading 'from hell', i avoided googling any points of interest until i was finished - so what if the chief protagonist was a man in his 70s who'd suffered a stroke shortly before the murders? still do-able!

message 471: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments As tech will know ... one of the very first things that you learn as a Student Nurse is to never EVER underestimate that quiet and gentle sweet little old dear who is meekly sat up in Bed or in a nearby Armchair! ;o>

They can suddenly 'switch' into becoming possessed with what seems to be almost a demonic source of power and be able to call on the strength of a whole herd of Elephants! ;oO

I've suddenly found myself being half-strangled by IV Tubing, had my Scissors grabbed (on their Chain) out of my Uniform Pocket and come close to being stabbed with them, and been hit full in the Face by a Urinal Bottle that was, thankfully, empty at the time!

The chief protagonist was a 70 year old Man who had just suffered a Stroke shortly before the Murders? ... Yep! - definitely still very do-able indeed!

message 472: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments throw in that he was madder than a bag of logs, and yeah, why not?

btw, was the third paragraph describing a night out at weatherspoons? parp!

message 473: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Nope ... the first incident happened as I was helping to plump up the Pillows behind a very agitated and confused elderly Lady who had just come onto the Ward via A&E. She had actually arrived in Hand Restraints and Sister had just insisted on them being removed - LOL!!! ;o>

The second incident happened on Placement in a Psychogeriatric Unit - I managed to wrestle my Scissors back off the Patient and distract him with the offer of a Cup of Tea and some Toast with Jam. After he had had his Snack he wandered off, perfectly calm and all happy once again, back into the TV Lounge to watch Countdown ;o>

The third incident happened on a Male Medical & Surgical Ward when the Patient suddenly started having some kind of a psychotic episode and I was running in to offer assistance to the other Student Nurse that the Patient was screaming and throwing things at. I came in the Door and ... BANG!!! ... the Bottle hit me so hard that I ended up with two black Eyes and a cut Lip!

Happy Days!!! - LOL!!! ;o>

Watchmen and V for Vendetta are two of my favourite films. They're different experiences to the impeccable comic originals but still excellent in their way.

message 475: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments continuing my tendency to read graphic novels this year, and in particular, graphic novels written by alan moore, i'm reliving The Ballad of Halo Jones (in 3 volumes), having first read it as serialised in 2000ad back in the day. as well as an engrossing odyssey, it also was/is a very strong statement on feminism - as i keep saying, alan moore knows the score!

Post Soviet (postsoviet) | 551 comments Got into Yuval Noah Harari, managed Sapiens A Brief History of Humankind but stuck halfway with Homo Deus A Brief History of Tomorrow, he is smart, love his dry sense of humor but we're just on different wave length - too much belief in all powerful science and mind for me.

Now started Clive Barker's Books Of Blood. What a relief.

message 484: by Blastronaut (last edited Nov 18, 2020 04:52AM) (new)

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Books Of Blood are pretty good, Post. Barker don't mess around does he? Lot's of fun.. and Barker being Barker.. no shortage of gory violence.

As a whole, Vol 1 stands out for me (The Yattering And Jack fair tickled me) with all shorts pretty damn good. Also Vol 3 is very solid throughout with Rawhead Rex being the best un there... imo of course.
Just got the BOB back out to look at the titles (my memory is terrible for titles, names, phone numbers etc - pretty much everything actually!) and tho I got to some quite recently, it's many years since I read others, so I'm a tad foggy on some. Let us know how ya get on with em eh?

Craig White | 6727 comments limmy's autobiography, Surprisingly Down to Earth, and Very Funny: My Autobiography, was indeed surprisingly down to earth and very funny, but just lacked that weebit more surprisingly down to earth and very funniness that would have rendered it classic. several passages were a little flat, but it was in places, very raw and honest, and next to kelman, he is a master of transcribing the wee private thoughts in his head and on to paper. on the whole though, it's surprisingly down to earth and very funny.

a big poondland poond bought me A Decent Ride today - ain't read a welsh for ages, and the last couple of those were a bit pedestrian, so £1's not much to waste if this is the same.

message 487: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments hmmm, that 1st sentence in the 2nd paragraph doesn't read well at all - perhaps a suggestion of poundland's move into the sex trade. wonder how long your pound would buy with a lady (or man) of negotiable affection?

Val H. | 22157 comments So has anyone read "Shuggie Bain"? If so, what's the verdict? I have it sitting on my vast "to read" pile but lord knows when I'll get to it. I don't have a good track record with Booker Prize winners in the main.

message 493: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments it's registered as existing, val, along with a 'hmmm, i wonder', a cheap copy/kindle may entice me.
my favourte 'booker' is kelman's 'how late it was, how late', but it's winning was mired in controversy, due to the (scottish) language used.

I've been watching the odd episode of 'Walker, Texas Ranger' (despite some of them being SO excruciatingly heartrendingly cheesy that they are almost unbearable to watch!) and I hear that Chuck Norris could take down Judge Dredd with just the one Spin Kick?!! ;o>

message 498: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments dredd would have his sad old nadgers for earrings without the need to move!

anyhoo, having plenty reading time i've been bashing on thru' heading for 'shuggie bain', the 'predator vs dredd vs aliens' graphic novel is magnificent - stunning artwork over two seperate dredd stories featuring the well known alien races attempts to infiltrate mega city one. no ******* chance! who's next?

irvine welsh's A Decent Ride is very funny, has a shedload of sex 'n' drugs, unlikely scenarios, but the 'edge' welsh previously wielded with skill and conviction, appears no longer to be there. cruising, but, ahem, decent.

junior lent me One Billion Years to the End of the World - short s.f. novel concerning a quartet of scientists who are on the verge of separate breakthroughs, but suddenly are put off their work by a series of unlikely and persistent interruptions. they get together to try to find an answer (except the dead one!) - fascinating - halfway through.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments ! ... ;o>

I am currently reading the Manual of a Panasonic Microwave ... and, to be honest, while I must admit that I am finding it to be very detailed and quite informative, I'm not exactly all caught up in it - probably due to it having a complete lack of Characters, any Story-lines, and with it having a Plot with no connections at all with any real emotions.

There's so little interaction? There's also no meaningful relationships or any passion either or, in fact, all that much of anything at all happening throughout the entire Book? ... having got a bit bored now and already flicked through to the last Page to see if it gets any better or far more worth my time in reading it.

It's undoubtably a very handy reference for both new (as well as existing) owners of the Panasonic NN-SD27HSBPQ Solo Inverter Microwave Oven, 23 Litre, 1000 W, Stainless Steel ... but there's unfortunately not anything else at all to it to ever recommend it as a good read to anyone else ...
