So presumably the photo was in the 1900s? I love the winkle-picker shoes and the cloche hat, which look more like the 50s and the 20s respectively.

Was Constance the sister of your grandparents, or was she on the other side of the family? I thought, if the former, you might be able to find her and her siblings on one of the census records - 1871? 1881 (available for free), 1891. She may have left the family home by 1901 and 1911. Assuming, of course, that we're talking about England; many Irish records have gone astray from one cause or another.

She’s not wearing her wedding ring, so if she got married in her 20s, say, it probably will be the early 1900s.

Sorry Val, didn’t see your post. She was my dad’s aunt but I don’t know whether his mum’s or dad’s sister or either of her surnames. Don’t remember her address either! I’m a challenge to genealogists!

Not a great challenge, surely? You could work back from your dad's birth certiificate.

We haven’t got my dad’s birth certificate, not entirely sure where he was born and he had one of the most common Welsh names!
I’ve always meant to start the family tree but been too daunted.

If you know his date of birth you could always apply for his birth certificate. Or try tracking him via his service record if he served in WWI or II. Or maybe you could find some clues from the 1939 Register:

https://www.findmypast.com.au/1939reg...

Family history can be quite expensive until you narrow down your searches. The Mormon Church has done much of the leg work and is free to use. You do have to corroborate some of the results though - entries submitted by members can be iffy. But they have filmed church registers all over the world. And we have them to thank for the free 1881 Census.

nocheese | 6824 comments Won't help you, Lez, but for anyone researching Scottish ancestry, this is a brilliant resource:

Perhaps Somerset House does something similar?

Lez | 7490 comments Thanks so much Val! I hadn’t thought about his service record. He was in the RAF in India during the war. I even know his rank - he was a corporal in charge of stores. If he was to be believed, he spent 3 years picking weevils out of biscuits and playing tennis.
I did know about the Mormons, Liverpool Record Office had access on microfiche/microfilm (remember them?) Can’t wait to get started now, have to get my laptop fixed.
Thanks again.

nocheese | 6824 comments Re maiden great aunts, I've just been transcribing this. She was a staunch Presbyterian and a lifelong teetotaller. She was walking home from an evening church social. It is June 1945:
"A crowd of youths on bicycles came up the road, the pub had been closed, they were slightly elevated, singing & acting silly. To see young lads under the influence of drink infuriates me. I thought I would like to take Macpherson, the publican, by the lugs and thump his head on the road. Then I would throw him into the ditch, empty a barrel of whisky over him, & set fire to him. And so perish every man who sells whisky to laddies! "

Just realised one title has two possible links.

Val H. | 22143 comments An adjective. Well that narrows it down (not that I'm any further forward). I was playing around with Match as in Matchbox, match day, cricket match.
