TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments In Johnny's absence, I'll jump in with something different!

Not a word in common.

Cloudbusting - Kate Bush
Space Oddity - David Bowie
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

They may be but that's not I'm looking for ...

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Not a word in common.

Cloudbusting - Kate Bush
Annie's Song - John Denver
Space Oddity - David Bowie
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Hints:
1. "Not a word in common" says what type of puzzle it isn't. It's also a very big clue to what the link is.
2. Karaoke singers and cover artists are more likely to be aware of what these songs have in common than the casual listener.
3. Songs with this property are in a very small minority percentage-wise. I picked well-known ones so that even casual listeners will immediately recognise the answer once it's revealed.

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments 4. No musical ability required. Even a tone-deaf person can get this.

message 505: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm still none the wiser :)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Grizzlygrump wrote: "I'm still none the wiser :)"

Without actually giving the answer, I'm running out of hints!

5. What can you say about the titles of all these songs that's pretty rare with pop songs?

message 507: by [deleted user] (new)

They're all good songs?

I'm thinking now that the song title does not feature in the lyrics.

message 508: by TwoddleBungler (last edited Feb 04, 2018 12:49PM) (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Grizzlygrump wrote: " ... I'm thinking now that the song title does not feature in the lyrics."

That is absolutely true! You're 90% there. However the following song complies with your suggestion:

A Day in the Life - The Beatles

Yet it does not quite satisfy the criterion I'm looking for. Think of the very first hint :-)

message 509: by [deleted user] (new)

Damn you man!

That was my best guess :)

message 510: by TwoddleBungler (last edited Feb 04, 2018 12:55PM) (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments It's so close, I'll feel guilty not to give it to you. Maybe it's unreasonable of me to expect the last tiny detail.

Shall I just tell you?

message 511: by [deleted user] (new)

Go on, please put me out of my misery or I won't sleep tonight.

Besides....I can't get the cork back in the Champagne! :)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Grizzlygrump wrote: "Go on, please put me out of my misery or I won't sleep tonight.

Haha!

Not only do the titles not appear in the lyrics - not a single word of the title appears in the lyrics!

(Whereas, with "A day in the life" for example, some of the individual words can be found in the lyrics)

message 513: by TwoddleBungler (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Over to you Grizzly.

message 514: by [deleted user] (new)

Leave it with me for a bit, I'll see what I can come up with.

message 515: by [deleted user] (new)

Let's see what you make of this;

Streets Of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen
Up The Junction - Squeeze
Penny Lane - The Beatles

message 516: by TwoddleBungler (last edited Feb 05, 2018 02:32AM) (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments The titles all feature in movies in some way?

Streets Of Philadelphia - film Philadelphia (1993)
Up the Junction - film Up the Junction (1968)
Penny Lane - film Almost Famous (2000)

message 517: by [deleted user] (new)

That's not the connection I was thinking of, but I'm glad to see you not going for the obvious "road" link :)

message 518: by TwoddleBungler (last edited Feb 05, 2018 07:21AM) (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments The very last words sung are the title.

message 519: by [deleted user] (new)

Another good one but still not the answer I'm looking for :)

message 520: by TwoddleBungler (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments The initial letters form a word - SUP

message 521: by [deleted user] (new)

They were listed in no particular order, and I never noticed that.

Let's add another:

American Pie - Don McLean

message 522: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm off to work now, back in the morning :)

message 524: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 2196 comments Grizzle hasn't said if there's any links on the above, if so, how many?

message 525: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning;

It is not any particular word that links a word in either the song titles or artists' names, it is something that these songs all have in common.
My apologies for not making that clear in the first instance.

message 526: by nocheese (new)

nocheese | 6824 comments bump

message 527: by TwoddleBungler (last edited Feb 08, 2018 04:19AM) (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments All the songs feature a narrative witnessed by the singer, "I" and "me", kind of semi-autobiographical.

message 528: by [deleted user] (new)

Again, not what I am thinking.

Streets Of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen
Up The Junction - Squeeze
Penny Lane - The Beatles
American Pie - Don McLean

Bitter Sweet Symphony - The Verve

message 529: by TwoddleBungler (last edited Feb 08, 2018 08:46AM) (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Did they all peak at number 2 in the charts?

message 530: by [deleted user] (new)

More specifically, they all peaked at number 2 in the UK singles charts.

Well done TB, I thought I might have to list some of the more obvious ones, like Vienna - Ultravox :)

Over to you to do your fiendish worst :)

message 531: by TwoddleBungler (last edited Feb 08, 2018 10:04AM) (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Not a 'word-in-common' type puzzle.

Eye Level (Van der Valk Theme) - the Simon Park Orchestra
I Told You I Was Mean - Elle King
When All Is Said And Done - ABBA

message 532: by TwoddleBungler (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Hint:

On the basis that both nocheese and myself used the word 'big' and we both only got one link :)

Ah, but it could be that 'big' was wrong and you each got a different link right. (Hint!)
