Less so than Adam Adamant off the tele if anyone remembers that show?

He certainly was. Just don't google up to date pictures.

Looks a bit like Michael Palin

Brass Neck | 3979 comments More Michael Juan Zim Palin'. Looks ready for Ben Stokes to mock/protect to the fullest extent of his not-at-all drunken fists.

Val H. | 22143 comments I think I should start giving quiz shows a miss if I don't want to feel ancient. On Think Tank tonight, a bloke didn't know who Barry Manilow was and couldn't guess at the song which began "Her name was Lola"

Yesterday my daughter and son-in-law denied any knowledge of a song called "MacArthur Park".

I felt very sorry for the young lass on Pointless (we see VERY old episodes here) who, when the clue was who was assassinated in Dallas in 1962?, replied "J.R." Alexander and Richard were almost rolling on the floor.

It’s on YT, Val. It went, as they say now, ‘viral’ here. I suspect her partner didn’t know either!

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VvRwRuH...

We have a channel called ‘Challenge’ which has old gameshows pretty much on a loop - Bullseye, Family Fortunes, Wheel of Fortune etc. all from the ‘80s - ‘90s. The clothes are unbelievable and terms such as Red Indian sound so wrong now.

Btw, lucky escape, not having heard MacArthur Park, or indeed Barry Manilow! 😀

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I have lots of Songs in my Head that I know so well yet, for some reason or other, I still have no idea of the Song Title or name of the Band ... and I must admit I never knew that particular Song was called 'MacArthur Park' until about 5 years ago - despite having often heard it and knowing about it for as long as I can remember.

It may still be completely new to them - but have you tried singing or playing it to see if that brings any kind of a light-bulb moment to your Daughter and Son-In-Law, Val? ;o>

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments J.R. ... ! ... and, to make us all feel even older still, there are now a lot of folk out there who also don't have any idea as to who on Earth J.R. is! ;oO

Not surprised at all! As soon as we saw it, we knew that lass was going to have to live with it all her days!

Val H. | 22143 comments I've given up expecting young people to know the musicians/songs I enjoyed. My son-in-law tends to have "old" tastes for a 30 year old - loves the Beach Boys, the Four Seasons, a lot of Tamla Motown. Mr H. and I were watching the very touching Glen Campbell documentary "I'll Be Me" and Mr H. said "Have you told A that Glen Campbell played in the Beach Boys?" "Why would I do that?" I replied. "He'll only say 'Who's Glen Campbell?"Next time we caught up, I did ask him. I was right!

message 1211: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments My nephew (b. 1978) was brought up with my sister’s LPs and she was into the Beach Boys and lots of Motown. He admired Glen Campbell as a guitarist and he also liked Roy Orbison. He also introduced me to Tom Petty and Tom Waits (I’d diverted into classical in their heyday). My niece has always been folky and also into musicals.
Val, have you seen the Roy Orbison documentary ‘In Dreams’ ?
I was never a big fan but watched it with my sister - it’s very good and really sad.
Oh, dear, 3 of us have broken the ‘No music allowed’ rule. SRJ will have us banned.

Yes, he’s come back but only on the footie thread so you won’t have seen him. He calls himself Stewart but signs off as SRJ.

I'm so glad that so many of us got to know where we were setting up on here and made it over - even if a few don't tend to bob in all that often now at least they know where we all are.

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments The Story was more than funny enough in itself but then halfway through the Report it goes on to say ...

"The LFB has repeatedly called on members of the public not to dial 999 when a pet becomes trapped, following a huge increase in the number of call outs.

It said its officers have previously been called to rescue an iguana from a roof, a kitten wedged in a bongo drum and a chimp trapped in a chimney"

... WHAT?!! ;oO

I can sort-of imagine a poor Kitten getting itself accidentally wedged in a Bongo Drum ... but a Chimp trapped in a Chimney?!! ;oO

Mrs Grizzly does amuse me by not properly saying what she means - she was telling me all about the latest meal replacement shakes we have bought that I have yet to try.
"These ones are much better than the last lot as you don't use milk, you just add the powder to your 200 litres of water, give it a shake with the little metal thing in the cup and you're done!"

Even better, she told me that she managed to drink it all in one go :)

Wrong end - it's a suppository shake, the latest thing combining minimal nutrition AND a colossal enema ….. after which it's not so much the stomach that needs stapling but the entire small bowel back together. Rectum? Not 'alf.

message 1242: by [deleted user] (new)

Not had a battered beefburger, but have tried one with cheese and sauce and enclosed in pastry. Once was enough.

As for all that lot, does it come with a pud?
Deep fried Mars Bar, perhaps?

message 1243: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments at the same time i'm not defending the health issues or pandering to the minute by minute whims of the food fascists, but at a tenner, that represents damn good value as a sharing tray (anybody that ate that themselves would indeed be a greedy fat bastard who deserved a heart attack), much in the same style as a family pizza. no family is going to eat it on a daily basis either!

deep fried hamburgers are unspeakably toothsome, and in my book far tastier than any burger chain product, but if you don't have the common sense to indulge mibbe 2 or 3 times a year, they will do their best to kill you.

the only negative about the deep fried mars bar is that they're so pathetically small, but again, portion control is probably a necessity to ensure survival.
