Blastronaut | 1061 comments Actually didn't watch the penalties t'other night. Couldn't bear to watch another exit via penalties so I went onto the back garden to watch a fox that's been visiting the back field for a few nights at around that time - in fact ya can set yer clock by him/her; appears about an hour before dark and goes off back through the bottom hedge as the light fades. Anyway, when I heard some jubilant screaming from a flat/house not far away I knew it was safe to return to the TV.
The fox also exited at that time. Maybe it was spooked by the shouting or (as I prefer to believe) it also knew then it was safe to return to the TV in the den! : )

He certainly has an awful lot of love for himself though?! He was there as an honorary guest of FIFA to watch the Football yet seemed to be far more preoccupied with trying to keep the world's cameras all fixed on him instead as he did his very best to milk the occasion for all of the attention and adoration he could possibly wring out of it - LOL! ;o>

Yeah, bang on there m'dear. I couldn't really print on here some of the words involved in what I think of him. Purely on footie skills alone, I have to admit he was one of the greats, but his rancid personality on and off the pitch kinda overshadows that imo.

Craig White | 6727 comments gareth southgate would pish in yer soup and not tell you till you'd finished it!

where we at with the quarters?

uruguay 2 france 3 - french to edge a very even match.

brazil 1 belgium 1 - belgium to win after e.t. and/or penalties. apparently neymar has spent 14 minutes in total rolling around the pitch in 'agony' - going to meet a ref at some point who won't tolerate this.

sweden 1 england 2 - it kills me! another tight game, possibly not very exciting (gotta take the scraps when i can)

russia 1 croatia 1 - russians, again, to take it in extra time and/or penalties.

theDuke | 6506 comments Well, that's all the south Americans teams gone..goodbye and good riddance! France..i'm still not convinced that they can go all the way..but that said..they won their game without really breaking a sweat....Uruguay underperformed. As for Brazil, Despite Naymar's usual pathetic acting...were to me, the stronger side, just couldn't find a way through the Belgies almost impregnable defence. I thought Fellaini & Lukaku were in top form tonight.

As for Russia...well, they shouldn't still be in this comp...but......this world cup is none other I've ever seen...the only thing that is certain at this tournament..is uncertainty! Croatia should win..but i'm gonna agree with Tech..Russia to win it, in some extraordinary fashion!

England? They're good....but I've not seen anything that shouts out brilliant yet....they got through on penalties...we still haven't seen them play up against a top form team and win in free play. Sweden won't be easy....but England ought to do it..but something tells me their luck has run out...this is where their campaigns ends for them. But they can come home to a glowing reception..this time!

Russia 0-0 (win on penalties.... again)
Sweden 2-1

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments So weird? - usually all Hell breaks loose in the neighbourhood around here and we can even hear the Cheers from the Beer Garden off the nearest Pub despite it being several Roads away ... yet there was only silence here today?!! ;oO

It just felt strange and rather unpatriotic - so I sent both of the little hairy woofers out barking to race a lap of honour around the Garden to celebrate the win ;o>

theDuke | 6506 comments Well...what do I know about footy..naff all it seems! England through...and Russia ain't!

Can't say I was particularly impressed with Croatia, they didn't really seem well knitted tonight.....Russia did better than I expected..but it twice lucky on penalty was a step too far.

Man of the England squad...gotta be Pickford, and he's only 24, bless him! :)

Would love to see England play a rematch in the final...what a game that would be, eh! :)

message 818: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments the semi-finals,

france 3 belgium 2 - fully expect giroud to have a say in the outcome, in an exciting open match.

croatia 3 england 1 - england won't recover from poor start, being taken surprise by the first opposition of substance that they've faced.

the signs were there early doors. heading out the house to attend a bitter local derby, she called after me as i left, "i hope ayr united win today!" (hmmmm, mibbe it's me, and no the fitba'???) :)

message 822: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments It think Belgium are by far the strongest team in the comp..I think they could well be the next cup holders. France hasn't impressed me...they seemed to got through on 'just enough'...they've haven't been outstanding imo. So I think it'll be a tight one..but Belgium will pull through.

As for England's chances? Well..i thought they would get passed Sweden, and despite the slow start..they dispatched Sweden in fine style. Croatia performance wasn't top notch in the last game..they looked a tad sluggish in parts. I don't think England will win...but if they can get off to a good start, with plenty of aggression & confidence..which they'll need from the start, against the Croats...they might do it....but I've a feeling it's gonna be Belgium v Croatia final.

France 1 - 2 Belgium (2nd goal to come very late in the game)
Croatia 3 - 2 England

Ah, you’ve brought back happy memories of Liverpool’s Roger Hunt, much appreciated by ladies of my era. Floppy blonde hair and the best legs in the business.
This is the best pic I can find at the mo.

Can only hope that Croatia can take on the might of the world's most expensive footy team..and thrash 'em!

message 833: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments i don't know what would be more satisfying, to lose in the semis or the final? anyhoo, england again suffered when they came up against quality - with the soft draw they got, they'll never have a better chance, but they lacked that extra gear of determination. the play off on saturday against belgium will be a better meter of where england are actually at in terms of capability. but i will admit - 4th place in a world cup is 'no bad'! :)

3rd place would be better! Remember, Mr Southgate didn't commit his top players in the group game against Belgium, England might do better this time...that said...Harry Kane seems to have gone off the boil just a tad.

Anyhoo..for England to have gone the distant, and still be playing almost right to the end..is a sterling effort, something to be proud of....for sure, they still need more experience & build up their confidence when taking goal shots, but I reckon England in two years time, will be a team hard to beat....roll on the Euros!

message 839: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Can anyone tell me why both England and Croatia were so tired?

It was repeated by almost everyone who was commentating throughout the Match just how weary, how tired, how exhausted both Teams were?

message 840: by theDuke (last edited Jul 12, 2018 10:09AM) (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments You play 2 hours of footy in humid conditions..and then see how perky you would be afterwards, Suzy!!

To be honest, the Croats didn't look as knackered and riddled with cramp as they were in their last match..which was what England were hoping for last night. England were worn out because the midfielders were too thinly spread out..and thus spent most of the match running too much.

message 841: by suzysunshine7 (last edited Jul 12, 2018 10:06AM) (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16062 comments Doh! - I get that! - but they were saying it from the very start? ;o>

message 842: by theDuke (last edited Jul 12, 2018 10:59AM) (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Well..i imagine all the surviving teams will be feeling a tad fatigued now....after 2 weeks of playing top level football...especially in the hot & sometimes humid conditions..it's a tough feat to keep it up. At this stage of tournament, the remaining teams will be relying on just as much on physical strength and durability as they will be on skill, not too mention as few injured players as poss. That said, you're right...we had an almost zero injury list, with Vardy back on the pitch in the last game, they are much younger the many of the Croat players...but yet looked knackered! I think that more down to the experience of the Croatians to wear down our players..hence why they got stronger as the game went on...our boys just seemed to run out of puff by half time. Something for Mr Southgate to work on, cos next time it'll be even hotter in Qatar! Plus their timing and accuracy needs to be improved on, as England ought to have been 3 goals up in that first half, but some of England players were always close, but not just quite able to finish off.

It's a good start...and something for Mr Southgate and his boys to build on....I guess we'll find out in two years time.

Next year....is the Women's world cup..and our ladies are doing very well in the qualifiers, so far! :)

message 843: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments "next time it'll be even hotter in Qatar!"

they gots to qualify first!

message 844: by theDuke (last edited Jul 12, 2018 01:18PM) (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Don't be giving me those negative waves so soon Techy...they will make it! Failing that..if the Croats can make it this far into the tournament, coming from a country with a population not much greater then Wales's...then I see no reason why our brave Welsh lads can't qualify too! They came close last year. Hope to see them in the next Euros again...they did so well in 2016.

message 845: by Gordon (new)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments theDuke wrote: "It's a good start...and something for Mr Southgate and his boys to build on..."

If he can continue to work with his team and keep it together in the face of media pressure to select serial failures like Jack Wilshere and Ross Barkley. The FA will not be on his side: they want the big names with followings in the far east to be in the team. Marketing and megabuck TV deals are everything.

message 846: by theDuke (last edited Jul 12, 2018 02:38PM) (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Well, that's where FIFA gets its wrong then. If this new team is anything to go by, picking established players, who have little to gain as they've already made their name within football circles..and therefor, perhaps, lack the passion and hunger that so many of our better known players seem to be missing....like Rooney for eg..a player much over hyped imo, and was never worth all the media hype he got, in fact, as far as I could make out..the only thing he was ever good at..was cheating on Coleen! Same goes for bend it like soddin' Becks..who was too busy shagging his way though Wags, than playing international football with any real desire! By taking new players 'from-the-apple-tree', has shown that these players want it more & have everything to prove, seems to be the way to go imo. The downside with this team, was lack of experience...so maybe for 2022, a mix of the two would work better, perhaps?!

Sj Brooke | 2523 comments theDuke wrote: " Same goes for bend it like soddin' Becks..who was too busy shagging his way though Wags, than playing international football with any real desire!."

Not sure you got the right player there Dunc! Maybe your very own Ryan Giggs or John Terry perhaps, but surely not ol' 'Golden Balls'!

message 848: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6506 comments Becks has been unfaithful on several accounts...not counting Rebecca Loos..which is still 'alledged'..but non the less, still a cheater! But I hadn't forgotten about Terry & Giggsy too!

message 849: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments apparently beckham has gotten someone pregnant (presumably a woman), and has paid off the media to suppress publication! but who cares? the beckham's sham family (a shamily?) seems little more than a brand package (one worth millions, right enough).

anyhoo, predictions for remaining matches (is it still on? or did it finish when england went out?),

depends on what england and belgium put on the park - england might find out that their case might have been helped by giving rashford more game time, rather than persisting with the unspectacular sterling, but hey ho,
belgium 3 england 1

the final has the makings of a classic, but it won't be. it'll be dreary, and as much as i'd like to see croatia win, they wont!
france 1 croatia 0
after 90 minutes, the world spared the tedium of extra time.

message 850: by Rob (last edited Jul 14, 2018 12:04AM) (new)

Rob Campbell | 477 comments You'd think that France would be too good for Croatia but [Jimmy Greaves mode]It's been a funny old World Cup[/Jimmy Greaves mode] and Croatia do have a more than decent midfield.

3rd place play off is a coin toss - Belgium have a far better team but will they be bothered in what is a nothing match?

England had a very good World Cup but despite all the positivity, we don't have a player like Hazard, De Bruyne, Modric, Silva etc. who can play the killer pass at the right time. Whilst they may do well over the next few years, without that type of player, we won't win anything.
