Isabella | 1370 comments I know from experience just how difficult these discussions are but one suggestion, following our friends' problems, is to speak to a trustworthy financial adviser. Our friends had both retired and were faced with having to pay off a mortgage without enough capital to do it. Their pensions were fixed and not over generous but the advisor found them a really good mortgage deal that allowed them to pay off their existing debt and have a little to sort out some maintenance on the house. They'll be paying the new mortgage for a good few years yet but it's lower than before and they're in a much better position than being forced to sell in a hurry. They can now move when they want instead of being forced into it by the building society.
I know everyone's circumstances are different but hope this helps...

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments That's a very good idea, Isabella ;o>

Thankfully, my M&D were determined to pay off their Mortgage as soon as they possibly could, no matter how tight the Money coming in always was, and they managed to achieve that goal just before they became Pensioners.

message 1432: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments I knew you'd notice it, Lez Lee ;o> ... a bit weird, isn't it? - that they spelt one of the leading character's name wrong and yet no-one apparently picked up on it at the time?

message 1433: by theDuke (last edited Oct 11, 2018 05:22PM) (new)

theDuke | 6492 comments I suspect, Americans of the day, had little knowledge of any country outside of their own, except those they've been at war with! So, to not have bothered to check the spelling of some northern western African country, is hardly surprising, to me!Furthermore..to have adorned the mole character with Morocco, albeit badly spelt, is even more odd, given that moles don't exist in northern Africa! Southern Africa, yes....but not in Morocco!

Perhaps, it being 1965, tv producers and indeed animators of the day, were far more preoccupied with sending up those sneaky Russians, & of course the Victor Charlie's in 'nam too! :)

Maybe they've learnt a bit more since...now the cold war is over......for now! ;-)

Maybe China's & Japan's troublesome neighbouring, cheese eating rotund one with the silly haircut and a growing nuclear arsenal, could change that though!

message 1434: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments It seems to be a one-off mistake, Duke, as I can't find it spelt any other way than the correct way of spelling it elsewhere? - and there appears to be no explanation online as to why it was spelt wrongly on this particular Cartoon Intro Artwork so it doesn't seem to be a deliberate thing either.

I think the Illustrator on this one must have been working around the clock and to a deadline to get this Artwork finished and then no-one must have noticed his spelling mistake in time before they released this episode of the Cartoon? ;o>

It doesn't explain why a mole was named after a country that doesn't have them, though! ;-)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments Hi Gordon and everyone,

I'm toying with the idea of starting a thread in Trackless Wastes called Let's have a heated debate.

Provisionally my spiel would be as follows:

_______________________________________

I realise starting a thread like this is a risk. If it gets unpleasant I'll ask that it be deleted.

Rules

No personal insults
No facile comparisons with Hitler
No swearing
If you think someone is wrong then give a reasoned factual counter-argument not just a flat denial or accusation of stupidity.
Take the time to consider others' point of view - they must have a reason for it. Ask for their reasons.

_______________________________

Are people up for this?

message 1444: by Isabella (new)

Isabella | 1370 comments Any limits on the subject? Politics, religion, global warming, sock ironing, milk first in tea?

I'm definitely keen to hear reasoned arguments. I'm old enough to have caught on to the idea that I may be missing something when I make up my mind, though I reserve the right to stick to my original opinion! ;o)

message 1445: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments Perhaps leave religion out, it’s a very personal thing and people get upset.

I'm in (at least) two minds about this. In my 25 years on the internet I have never known something like this to turn out well. I inhabit a lot of online discussion forums: reasoned arguments are rare and are never given much attention, largely because a reasoned argument is almost always long, detailed and dependent on citations of evidence. Also, there is little scope for even a reasoned argument to change someone's fundamental values. Finally, many people here are fairly readily identifiable and might be unwilling to express their beliefs/opinions openly.

message 1447: by TwoddleBungler (new)

TwoddleBungler | 4920 comments I hadn't thought about limits. There is always the option to stop reading if something upsets you. Personally, as an agnostic (but not an atheist), I'm interested to hear other people's views on their religion. Who knows, someone might manage to persuade me they're right, but I'd question absolutely everything along the way.

Let's see what others think.

As was suggested, the subject matter could be anything, including the best way to fold socks. If someone doesn't want to speak openly about something then can't they simply avoid taking part in that particular debate?

I'm not wedded to the idea though. Maybe we should exclude certain subjects.

message 1449: by Lez (last edited Nov 11, 2018 03:40AM) (new)

Lez | 7490 comments Thinking about it, I wouldn’t trust myself to post on such a thread - I’m far too opinionated! It’s really difficult to have an orderly debate online mainly because of timings. You find there’ve been 10 posts while you were having your tea and you’ve lost your chance.
I’ve never understood debating for the sake of it, I think discussions should arise out of an already ongoing conversation.
And asking for a ‘heated’ debate? Er, no. ;-)
The ‘Bollocks’ , ‘...Snails’ and ‘Niggles’ threads are pretty wide-ranging.

message 1450: by Isabella (new)

Isabella | 1370 comments It's a tricky one. Part of the pleasure of 'Exiles' is that everyone is very civil(ised), so far, although from careful reading of posts, it's clear that there's quite a range of opinions and backgrounds among us.
Lez is opinionated - so am I. But I do welcome the opportunity to be shown other people's reasons for holding a different view, and even if I'm not converted, it helps me not simply to dismiss the opposition as daft or nasty or whatever.
Perhaps the 'reply' system might help with Lez's point about missing your chance?
Dunno... :o)
