The Forums were frequently full of complaints about Lovefilm but you'd think Amazon would have tried working on improving the Service rather than just closing it down?

And as for the taking over of local Stores and then shutting them down? - well, sadly, I have a horrible feeling that actual Shops will very soon become a thing of the past if this current trend continues ;o<

Soon we will all end up living in Residential areas with nothing else but huge Industrial Parks full of Warehouses all supplying online Stores! ;oO

Isabella | 1370 comments Part of the problem with very big companies is that they can easily calculate how much they're likely to lose from poor service and the consequent bad publicity and then balance it out against the gains made from customer inertia and new business from people who aren't aware of the problems. They have no incentive to improve if the losses are less than the gains. It's only when the publicity snowballs that there's change.

I have to admit I'm guilty of inertia and also of using deliveries and click and collect instead of going to the shops, so I can hardly complain too loudly.

message 904: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments shops? what's a shop?

here, in kilmarnock, 'wilkinson's' will shut down this month, and in the near future so will 'new look' and 'argos', leaving only a 'w.h. smith' among the barbershops, charity shops, pound/discount shops and a high number of empty premises!

really, if trump called kilmarnock a 'shithole', we'd have no argument!

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Well, I know my Laptop is playing up at the moment but that was something else! I've just repeatedly tried and failed to get into Goodreads because according to the Box that it pulled up ...

"Goodreads is over capacity. You can never have too many books, but Goodreads can sometimes have too many visitors. Don't worry! We are working to increase our capacity. Please reload the page to try again"

I'm afraid that doesn't exactly inspire very much confidence in me right now? ... I've been worried previously that our growing Forum might possibly end up exceeding any limits placed by Goodreads on individual Group Forums - but I never expected that I might not be able to access our Forum at all through there being far too many Visitors to the Goodreads site? ... Zikes!!! ;oO

message 918: by Serial (new)

Serial Sock Trumpet (serialsocktrumpet) | 1998 comments We've made the place far too popular with our 'quality reads'.

message 919: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments They really had better getting working on it! Amazon offered this place up as being somewhere for all of their Forum Users to go on to - and yet it seems it has not got the capacity to be able to take us all bobbing in?!!

message 920: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I’ve had that happen quite a few times since we started on here. I also get it on Talk Classical which is a massive American site and nothing at all to do with Amazon.

message 921: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Well, I'm very glad to hear that it wasn't any personal towards me, Lez Lee ;o>

But still, I might have had something absolutely mind-blowing and incredibly vital to say that could have had totally life-changing implications for everyone and then not been able to get on here to post? ... well?! ... I could have done?!! ...

... why do I hear sniggering coming off all the other Threads on here?!!?!!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 600 comments Oh I've been seeing that for years. And if you have something to share, you'll just have to hold it until you get here.

Suzy, one of the Goodreads forums I'm a member of has 7,668 members. I don't think our 90 registered members should worry that they might fracture the dromedary's spine.

Hi Blastro. Sorry to hear you (and the family?) have been laid low by the dreaded lurgy. As you say, Christmas must have been a ball. Hope you're feeling more yourself now and glad to see you posting again. Concern was expressed about your absence.

Our nominations and voters have been down so maybe when you're feeling up to it, you can come and swell our numbers. You are always missed.

Ohhh, you poor Poppet, Blastro! ... (*HUGE HUG*) ... x x x

What a really horrible way to end up spending Christmas! ;o<

EDIT - if it helps any, I had yet another crappy Christmas staying with someone who simply doesn't get what any of the fuss is all about and so he chose to sleep through Christmas and Boxing Day - and all that I had was just the TV for any conversation and company yet again. And after having 4 miserable years of this now, I've finally come to my senses and made my mind up to never do that ever again, and that next Christmas is going to be SO very different, and FUN!!! ;o>

Next Christmas is going to be ours, kid, so get ready to party!!!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 600 comments Next christmas round at Suzy's! I'll bring the Stroopwafel liqueur.

Blastronaut | 1061 comments Thanks for the replies ladies, it does seem that many posters just don't have owt to say to me of late... something seems to've grown over the last year-or-so on zon and carried over here it seems. Always tried to get on with folk right from the get-go back on Amazon many many moons ago and tried to avoid the 'cyber-brawls' that tend to happen every now and again but ya just don't get any respect for that. I do realize that I'm not gonna be everyone's cuppa with my tales of debauchery and anecdotes from the 90s but no offence was ever intended.

Maybe I'm being my usual paranoid self but was that an intended snub Gordon? Don't recall us having any problems fella?

Yeah Christmas has indeed been a cracker. Jayne in hospital Boxing Day morning with breathing difficulties. One of our lads also came down with it. A bloody slow moving affair is this - the rest of the family thought we'd got away with it but the last couple of days has seen more casualties. Really hope y'all manage to avoid it as it one of those gifts that just keep on giving; really hard to shake and the flu jab (for those who've had it) is totally ineffective.

When's AFL start Val? That'll give me summat to do.

message 940: by Craig White (new)

Craig White | 6727 comments as one of the ladies, blastro, i'll say no offence is ever taken! :) and this is a far better place when you're on here and contributing, long may you do so!

I think Gordon was referring to the fact that some people were logging on to goodreads and receiving messages along the lines of 'we're full up just now, come back later!'

My M&D both went down with it on Boxing Day and my Mum still has a persistent Chest Infection left-over from it that is showing no real signs yet of shifting. They get the Flu Jab every year and it seemingly makes no difference whatsoever? - I have never had a Flu Jab and yet I still keep on with managing to avoid anything beyond just getting the odd annoying bit of a sniffle?

Not sure if this is relevant but there seems to be a long lag time on here sometimes. I'll read and/or post and check back after an hour or so to find no change and then, maybe next day, find a whole string of posts that have gone on in the meantime, so it could be this lag effect making it look like there was no response. :0)

Heya Blastro! Wondered where ya got to! I've been lucky to escape the grasp of the dreaded flu...but xmas wasn't exactly a ball for me either....I've been wrestling with an abscess since Boxing Day, so my sympathies mate. I hope to get the offending tooth out once and for all next week.

As for lack of conversation...I've noticed how things have changed since coming over here...it's doesn't seem to be as fluid as it was over on Zon, but we've lost a few in the transition, and those that did make it over here, have split into different groups.

However, that said, the atmosphere is far more pleasant, than it was on some of the forums on Zon....so swings and roundabouts.

But we make do..and you're always welcome to come back to the music voting threads whenever you want to! Be glad see you back again mate! :)

Don't worry Blastro, I'll be pestering you when the time comes. However it's still cricket and tennis season here. Footy as we know and love it starts up again on March 22 and there'll be games on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday that weekend. I'm beginning to get a bit toey myself. Plenty of off-season action - your Doggies have off-loaded Jake Stringer ("The Package") to my beloved Bombers (not sure we really wanted him), Gazza ("Son of God") has made his way home to the Cats from the Suns for what may well be his final season, etc etc. I'll start a new thread going in early March and email you as well. No way you're not participating - you're the Doggies' lucky charm.

Anyone reading this who hasn't got a clue what I'm on about, you're more than welcome to join us in March for tipping on a sport you know nothing about. We had 17 punters last year but Stu is out injured and Wharfy is A.W.O.L. so three newbies would be most welcome (18 teams in the league but I'm happy to double-up if more than three want to join). Everyone will tell you you don't have to know anything about the game; everyone's a winner!

message 947: by theDuke (last edited Jan 19, 2018 04:19PM) (new)

theDuke | 6492 comments Can't wait for the new season..seems so long since the last one ended! :)

Any changes to my beloved Giants, Val? Really hoping that they'll make it all the way to the final this year! ;-D

Stu never made it across to goodreads..his team is up for grabs.

message 948: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22144 comments Nothing in particular I'm aware of Duke. Stevie J. and Big Mummy retired. Devon Smith was traded to the Bombers (Yay!) Like most clubs, a few players had corrective surgery over the summer but all are expected to return. Toby Green broke a toe but should be fit but Zac Williams has done his achilles and will miss a good part of the season.

message 949: by theDuke (new)

theDuke | 6492 comments So no new players then! Big Mummy will be missed though.

message 950: by Val (new)

Val H. | 22144 comments They will have picked up new players in the end-of-season draft but they are kids (18+) so it remains to be seen when they will get to play their first senior game.

http://www.gwsgiants.com.au/news/2017...

They also got a 27 year old who was delisted by Collingwood - Lachie Keeffe - at 6' 7", hopefully he will be a replacement for Mumford, although Rory Lobb can ruck as well.
