Aha! So that's where the sunshine comes from. So I guess it sleeps in a glow worms tum when the day is done, and the night has come... ;-)

That's had me too, all those flipping emails flocking in my inbox! It took me so long to sort them out when I eventually found time, and energy, that so little was left to actually post.
I just come here now and check my notifications 🤗, still takes time, but no need to delete all them mails ✂️

message 653: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I just delete then all immediately as I’m going to come straight here anyway and read all the new posts I’m interested in.

It seems to be a Default setting when you first start off on Goodreads that everywhere you go becomes a tracked place? - and when this Amazon Exiles Group Forum first set up and started taking shape I literally went everywhere and ended up with such an Inbox full!

If you go into 'Account Settings' and then 'Emails' you can play around with the settings on there but it still took time to work it all out. I think one of my biggest mistakes was not being able to figure out which was the check box for the Amazon Exiles Thread instead of the box for the entire Amazon Exiles Forum - because they have identical names and not much else to distinguish them from each other it took me a couple of days to realise that that was the reason was why my Inbox was continually so full with hundreds of Individual Emails on Threads I hadn't even been on and why I was also getting daily Digest Emails that were over several feet long!!!

It wasn't exactly the best start to coming on this site - I thought I was going to go mad with trying to work it all out and very nearly gave up on Goodreads completely but I got there in end! - LOL!!! ;o>

message 655: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I seem to remember I had a choice of which threads to track (?). Or perhaps I just don’t get notified of threads I’ve never posted on.
Either way I don’t get an overwhelming number.

Thought for the day - is anyone ever just ‘whelmed’ or are they always under - or over -? 😀

I really just wanted to master and customise the System, Lez, so I could get exactly what I actually wanted to get in the Digest, the Notifications on site and Individual Emails. It took some playing around but I finally got there in the end.

And I eventually discovered the Unread Posts page as well which suddenly made it a lot easier not to miss posts on the Threads that I wanted to keep up-to-date with, but without having to also track them, as well ;o>

I like the Thought for the Day very much - my Dad often jokingly says "I'm just whelmed - I really am" whenever he is feeling bored.

Oooo that's an interesting word! I'm going to have to start using that. I'm whelmed by paperwork! Seems the over- and under- must have been added as adverb descriptors and just stuck.

Whelm
verb
past tense: whelmed; past participle: whelmed

engulf, submerge, or bury: "a swimmer whelmed in a raging storm"

•well up or flow: "the brook whelmed up from its source"

Origin: Middle English: representing an Old English form parallel to hwelfan ‘overturn (a vessel’).

Have you ever met anyone you considered to be couth?

And while we're at it, what's the difference between a rule and a regulation?

And why is it that people who insist on the importance of law and order are only actually interested in order and become incensed when anyone tries to apply the law (see any number of Daily Heil headlines)?

message 659: by Sera69 (last edited Oct 24, 2017 03:27AM) (new)

Sera69 | 1922 comments Rules are made to be broken, Regulations are made to be enforced is the way I always understood them. ie rules are informal and regulations legal.

So in that case, 'overwhelmed' is tautology.

The truth is that first you "member" after that you "re-member" thirdly you "re-re-member" ~after that it is much easier to "forget"~~ but then you must research "get"~ is there a word "preget"??~~ and the beat goes on

message 683: by suzysunshine7 (new)

suzysunshine7 | 16038 comments Does anyone know how long a Thread can carry on? I keep feeling like maybe I should 'hold back' on posting on some of my most favourite Threads just in case I end up using them up too quickly?! - LOL! - such as on the Lyrics Thread where we often post up the full and quite lengthy Lyrics as well as just snippets of them.

It probably sounds a very daft question to everyone else but I'm not that IT savvy and have been wondering (and also worrying too) as to just how big all of the various Group Forums are allowed by Goodreads to get on here before restrictions might possibly be put in place?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 600 comments Much longer than on Amazon. I have seen threads of over 50,000 posts! And there doesn't seem to be any limit on the number of threads either. The UKAKF forum has been going for over 5 years and has over 5000 members, and we talk an awful lot of rubbish...
