ABANDONED. Book about a manipulative ventriloquist?

The magazine, Entertainment Weekly, used to have author book reviews. I cannot remember names and I never cut it out but one writer talked about a book he read in college where a ventriloquist comes to live with a family. Using his dummy he causes all kinds of drama in the family, ultimately destroying everyone in the household, just for kicks.

I thought he said the book (novella/story?) was called The Ventriloquist but I can find nothing like it by that title. Is anyone familiar with this story and does anyone know what it's called and who wrote it? I really want to read it. It's been stuck in my head ever since.

Lord, it's been at least 8-10 years. Just one of those things that I didn't think about until much later. Now, suddenly, I really want to know. I just remember the photo of the writer suggesting it. A b/w pic. Young, mid-30's; long-ish, curly hair. He said it really left an impression on him. Me, too - and I haven't even read it!
