The girl likes a popular boy whose name I think maybe Collin. She is nervous to go on a date, so she has a practice date with her best friend whose name I think might be matt.

True Believer The description will not match because this book was published before it was okay to mention homosexuality in a YA book blurb. But, it matches your memories with only a few slight differences.
