I just read that it is highly likely the show is likely to surpass the books, even probably ending before it. What do you think of this? Is it a good idea, a stupid one, or something unavoidable? Will those who read the book first stop watching the show until the books catch up? I'm curious to hear what everyone's opinions are about this.

I read that the TV series is close to running out of source material for several characters.

The show producers have said that GRRM gave them the overview so they would know how to set up the story arcs.
My biggest complaint is GRRM seems to put in a ton of time editing one anthology after another. Writing short stories about Dunk and Egg. It makes me feel that he has no idea where to go with the story so he is spending time doing other things until something just falls into his brain.
The reason I have not read the books before is Robert Jordan's death. I started the Wheel of Time books when only the first book was out. At that time it was going to be a trilogy. Then after 18 years and 11 books he got ill and died. luckily Brandon Sanderson was chosen to finish the story.
GRRM has said over and over that he does not want anyone else to finish his work. That's fair and i understand. But after so much time and involvement the readers deserve some sort of ending. We have invested a lot into the stories as well.

I have heard about the TV show running out of material. I was listening to a podcast about the season 4 finale that said Bran's story is pretty much caught up to where the his story is in the books. Also, I've heard this season saw a lot of changes from book to show. It makes me wonder if by next season they are going to deviate form the books even more so. They could also be doing what The Walking Dead has been doing. Adapting the various story arcs from the comic in new and different ways.

Sometimes I wonder if GRRM is a passive aggressive type person. a 'You want me to write, I just won't.' Will the HBO show change what he will write just to change things.
• A Game of Thrones (1996)
• A Clash of Kings (1998)
• A Storm of Swords (2000)
• A Feast for Crows (2005)
• A Dance with Dragons (2011)
I would give someone 3 years, maybe even a bit longer once. but A Feast and A Dance were written at the same time and he just pulled out 1/2 the characters from Feast to create Dance. That should not have taken 6 years.

I'm torn about the show creating new plots and characters. At one end I enjoy seeing the books come to life and the plots they follow. At the other end the creators said they plan for the show to probably be only 7 seasons and definitely no more than 10 (http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/03/11/gam...). Currently, it took a season for each of the first books and two for the third. I can't see them making Books 4-7 (possibly 8) in only three, or even five more seasons. That is unless they either cut a lot of material out from the books or adapt the series in a different way.

Book 6 for HBO's 6th season
Boon 7 for HBO's 7th season.
I would guess that the HBO seasons won't match exactly with the books but this is a good guess as to how they might set up the show.

That is what I figured as well, but that seems too be to much material to fit in only 30 episodes. I don;t think it could be possible unless they cut huge chunks out of the books.
