This book tells the story of Opal, who has recently had to move because her mother left her and her preacher father. When a stray dog enters the local Winn-Dixie, Opal saves the stray and names him after the location where she found him. He helps her find friends in the town through his friendliness and unique smile and brings an odd collection of people together in town who really need each other.

This is a charming book, and a very quick read. Kids love this book, and it's a good chapter book for third/fourth grade readers as well as struggling readers who need to read more comprehensive books. Opal also has to deal with a mother who likely is not coming back, and kids who have similar situations may identify with that aspect as well.
