A Closed and Common Orbit - Chambers Audio performance by Rachel Dulude 4 stars
This one was good entertainment with a generous tug on the heartstrings. There are two overlapping storylines that are spin-offs of Chamber’s first book. The artificial intelligence, Lovelace, who was installed at the end of A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is reinstalled in a ‘body kit’ and becomes Sidra. Sidra struggles with the existential meaning of life while attempting to make her way in the world. She is fostered by the tech maven, Pepper. The parallel storyline is about Pepper’s childhood struggle for survival and escape from a planet where gene tweaked clones were bred as industrial slaves.
Sidra was slightly annoying and her story dragged a bit. Possibly, I was so completely absorbed in Pepper’s back story, I just couldn’t care as much about Sidra’s struggles. I would have enjoyed more of the Jane 23 (aka Pepper) story, but I loved the way the storylines resolved together at the end.
