I think it was both/and, rather than either/or. He had to recall the old memories of Maggie, but he was walloped with the revelation of Quinn.
No, I don't think he was mixing his feelings. He was falling in love with Maggie again before he laid eyes on Quinn.
He had deep feelings for Maggie before, although he never would have admitted it. His feelings for Maggie now resurrected those old memories but he still wouldn't call it love. Dan didn't do love or long term, ever. Having Quinn in the mix really shook him up and he had to grow up and evaluate what his life is about.
