Our second guest author for October is Glen R. Krisch and we're in for a treat with this one. We'll be reading his much talked about novella, Loss! As always, we get to pick Glen's brain all month long and learn about the ins and outs of how Loss came to be. Please help me welcome, Glen Krisch!

Glad you enjoyed that twisted little story, Nisar! I'm really happy to be a part of Garden of Fiends with some of my literary heroes. I'm actually planning on writing a novel about the main character in "Torment of the Fallen", Maggie Torrence, in the near future.

The read goes all month long, Richard. We use spoiler tags here, so you can start anytime this month without fear of running into a spoiler and ruining the story for you. By all means, jump in whenever you're ready.

Glen, I'm definitely a cover art kinda-guy. It's a question I ask about to every author that joins our reads. So, here it is for you to answer - What can you tell us about the cover of Loss? Who did it? How much influence did you have on it? Etc.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I am planning on joining in with this. It will be my first HA group read and my first with an author participating. Should be fun.

Cover art is SO important. People do judge books by their covers, and I wish authors (and publishers) took it more seriously. There's always a nugget of truth behind a cliche, otherwise the phrase wouldn't be repeated enough to make it a cliche. I love the cover art for Loss. It's pretty much how I pictured it in my head when I emailed my go-to cover artist, Kealan Patrick Burke. Kealan has done a ton of my covers over the years. In fact, he recently sent me a new gorgeous cover for an upcoming novel I'm hoping to wrap up before the end of the year.

I've been reading Kealan's fiction for... geez, 15 years? I used to read a lot of 'zines back in the day. For the youngsters in the crowd, 'zines were saddle-stapled photocopied "magazines" that were mostly just forgettable stories and atrocious artwork. I've forgotten most of the authors' names from back then, but Kealan's work always stood out, so he pinged my radar early on.

When I started publishing my own work in 2010, I needed a cover artist. I reached out to Kealan to ask for the name of his cover artist, since I liked the covers for his ebooks. I was surprised to learn that he did the cover art himself. How many talents can one guy have? Really, Kealan, it's not fair! Anyway, we get along well, and he's been a true professional over the years.

Vicki Willis I read it today and loved it! It had an intensity to it that made me stay in bed long after I should have gotten up to finish it. :)

What I really enjoyed is how you were able to pack so much into a book this length. For example, (view spoiler)
I felt for the main character and did not see THAT coming!
Perfect read for October! Thanks Glen.

Do you prefer to write novella length stories over novel length?

message 30: by Glen (new)

Glen Krisch Glad you liked it, Vicki!

The scene where Paul and Angeline meet is one of the favorite scenes I've ever written. They felt so real to me. I could literally see them as I was typing. I felt bad because I knew bad things were going to happen to them later on.

I like writing novellas, but my ideas usually get too big and grow into novels. I actually intended for Loss to be novel-length, but as I worked on it, novella-length seemed the most natural for the story.

Hi Glen, I read this story in one sitting and I was really drawn into Angie's struggle to deal with (view spoiler).

One thing that I was uncertain about was (view spoiler). Did I miss this in the story or did you have a reason in your mind?

This was the first story of yours that I have read and will definitely be exploring some of your other work.

I finished Loss last night. I was all vested in Angie's plight and then the twist ending hit. Glen warned us that it was coming and that some love and some hate it. What did everyone think of that? (Please use spoiler tags)

message 38: by Glen (new)

Glen Krisch Early on I actually considered rewriting the ending after hearing from readers who didn't like it. Then I saw an equal number of readers who loved it. I actually really like the twist myself, but who am I to judge? LOL. Some readers even list it among their favorite reads of all time. Since the opinion has been fairly split, I decided to leave it as is.

That is a super interesting idea.

I was kinda torn on the ending myself. I liked the twist, but I also found it a bit jarring. It didn't ruin my experience of the book. But, I was like, woah, what is this. That being said, I loved how you got inside the character's mourning process and made us feel for her and connect with her.

Ken, thanks so much for your honest review! I'd much rather have an honest, substantive review that points out what you didn't like (and backs it up with examples), than an across the board positive review that does nothing more than pat me on the back.

Amanda (queenjaneapproximately) I'm so glad I fit this read in, I loved this novella so much.
Angie really resonated with me. My husband has seven siblings, and I'm an only child so the family dynamics felt familiar for me. Although my mother in law and I actually have a pretty good relationship ;) The story really played into my worst fears.

I quite liked the way it ended. I was so afraid that(view spoiler)

Glen really did a nice job putting us right there with Angie as she slowly began to spiral down the drain. There were so many times that I wanted to reach right onto the page and take the Vicodin and cheap wine away from her!
