Aza is different and I'm really loving the portrayal of OCD, it's very relatable and realistic. I do kind of hate that they're using Davis, who's obviously going through a rough time. Davis is so nice about everything though, I hope they can make it work. I'm starting to dislike Daisy again though-she seems to be blaming Aza for her difficulties and ignoring her for a boyfriend. I love the whole subplot thing with the writing of the Chewie/Rey fanfiction. It made me chuckle, which is good because this book is giving me all the feelings.

Ch 1-6

So this is the first thing by John Green I've ever read. Scandalous for a teen librarian, but he has been rather MIA for the last couple years and I hadn't yet gotten around to the John Green Backlog (along with all the other YA authors I hadn't read yet).

I'm not really sure how I feel about this yet. I've never really loved reading characters from the perspective of a mentally ill MC because they tend to be very chaotic in their thoughts and I tend to be a very empathetic reader. I don't like feeling so unsettled and anxious and chaotic myself. This book (view spoiler)[ seems to be starting off the same way. Although I will say Green is doing a very good job of portraying Aza's anxious state. I like Daisy a lot; she's funny and friendly and cute. I'm not entirely sure why she's friends with Aza. Perhaps Green should try to also portray Aza's more normal times (if she has them) or something of how she is perceived because she feels very frantic and within herself, which would make her kind of spaced out to the rest of the world. (hide spoiler)] I'm hoping the mystery grounds the book a little better as it gets going.

I have to admit, Aza is a well-developed character. She's very real. She seemed to (view spoiler)[ level out a bit more in this section, although honestly I was a little jarred by her sudden switch between "I don't want to date anyone" and wanting to kiss Davis. I mean, don't get me wrong, if I were her, I would want to kiss Davis, but I'm not struggling with overwhelming mental illness. I wasn't sure how all of a sudden she felt normal for this, but I think it's more because Green doesn't really show us her thoughts much when she's feeling normal. He skips those parts somewhat so we're mostly in anxious, struggling Aza's mind. Also I felt so awful for Davis when he just gave her the money... and I'm not sure it will work, especially with Daisy in the mix. There's really nothing stopping them from continuing this regardless, especially with Noah urging Aza to keep looking. What a mess.

Plus, I'm not 100% sure I buy that Davis was not only emancipated basically overnight but that he was given guardianship of Noah. (hide spoiler)] But I'm enjoying the book so far and I like Aza a little more than I did originally.

Apparently we're (view spoiler)[ getting our wish. I do like Davis. He's maybe a little too perfect but I'll totally forgive that. But Aza is now DRINKING HAND SANITIZER. I get it, I get it... I'm sure it's accurate but I just don't like her head much. The billionaire father is a little too convenient -- I want to say the mystery is fun because it's like a treasure hunt. Except it's not really. Davis seems to be mostly okay but I feel for Noah. And Aza's going to ruin this -- mental illness sucks. (hide spoiler)]

18-fin

Well... it was kind of what I expected from everything I've heard about John Green in one way, but in another, it wasn't what I expected at all. (view spoiler)[ The way Davis and Aza called it quits, particularly on Davis' end was really heartbreaking but it resonates as very true. Sometimes things just don't work out, particularly as teenagers, and for all that Aza would like to have a normal relationship, asking that much of another teen who has his own demons to battle is a lot. I can't fault Davis for calling it quits -- relationships, particularly in the beginning, need to be fulfilling for both people. There's a difference if you've been married to someone for twenty years and they develop an illness to dating someone who's already struggling so much. The end was a little jarring just because it all of a sudden switched to looking back on an entire life as an adult with no warning. I wish he had wrapped the story and written the rest as an epilogue. It also wasn't tidy but again, I felt that it was very realistic. It reminded me quite a bit of Ellen Hopkins' Crank series and the untidy reality of drug addiction she depicted there. (hide spoiler)] I'm not sure it's a book I'd read over and over but I would like to read some more of his work.
