Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments I'm traveling in December; will be tough for me to run a poll and manage the group read. If one of the other mods is interested in taking over the holiday monthly read, please speak up. Thanks!

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Hope everyone enjoyed our month off, and is ready for the holidays.

So what shall we choose for our first monthly book of 2025? A few ideas from the Stoker Awards shortlist:

Christi Nogle, The Best of our Past, the Worst of Our Future
Todd Keisling, Cold, Black, and Infinite
Sarah Read, Root Rot and other Grim Tales

Other nominations?

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for February's monthly read? I'm still interested in the collections by Christi Nogle and Sarah Read, happy to renominate them. Other ideas?

message 756: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 152 comments I'd like to add White Trash and Recycled Nightmares back into the mix. I own that one and still haven't read it.

message 758: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for our March monthly book? I'm still interested in the losers from the February poll, and can certainly carry them over. Other ideas?

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Last call for March nominations.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments We haven't had monthly reads in a couple months. Let's restart for June with some nominations!

Here are a couple ideas that I'm pretty excited to explore:

Julia Elliot, Hellions: Stories

I really enjoyed Elliot's first collection. Also:

Lynda Rucker, The Moon Will Look Strange

Other nominations?

message 762: by Ruri (last edited May 24, 2025 10:24AM) (new)

Ruri | 16 comments I'm curious about Elliot and Ruckers as I haven't read anything by them.
At this moment, I've just started the short-stories from Good and Evil and Other Stories I've finished just the first one and I'm doing my best not to read the rest because I want to savour it. It's been a while since a book hooked me like this! S. Schweblin is my favourite Argentinian author atm. Another must-read if you haven't done it is Tender Is the Flesh which is also on my TBR.
Then, I've seen The Vegetarian tagged as horror or weird fiction so I would also like to try this one.

Thanks for the heads up! I didn't know there's a new Schweblin. Goodreads used to send notifications on authors we follow, but we all know what happened to this decrepit site.

We've read more than one Schweblin book in the past. Ruri, should I put the new collection in the poll for June?

Maybe it's because it has been recently published and there aren't many editions? Yes, I was thinking about Kentukis which is another still pending for me, but then I saw the bc's bookshelves and saw that you read it during the pandemic! Anyways, I'd love to have Good and Evil to share with everyone, but I also like discovering new authors so the ones you proposed are good for me too!

I've read Tender is the Flesh, but I'm going to be reading The Unworthy by the same author with a different group in July.

I've read it a few weeks ago and I had the pleasure to meet the author! It's in my top 5 of this year, awesome read, but a bit difficult to digest as there are too many triggering scenes!

message 767: by Lili (new)

Lili | 5 comments I’m interested in Hellions! I also would like to nominate Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Last day to vote for June's monthly book! The contenders are pretty much neck-and-neck.

Since there seems to be significant interest, in case of a tie, I'm happy to set up more than one monthly read.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for July's monthly read?

An earlier idea:
Lynda Rucker, The Moon Will Look Strange

Another idea:
Kyusaku Yumeno, Kaimu: A Collection of Disturbing Dreams

I would renominate the latest Samanta Schweblin, but it's not out in the US yet.

message 771: by Whitney (new)

Whitney | 245 comments Another idea:

This looks great, will join if I can.

Vanessa | 152 comments I have been trying to use my kindle unlimited subscription more, so I'm good with these nominations.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments July poll is up! I added a third book (from the2024 Stoker nominees):
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/3...

message 775: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Ideas for August? Other than the other candidates from July, here's an idea:
Rose Keating, Oddbody

message 776: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 152 comments I'm definitely reading Oddbody now that I know it exists, so I'm good.

For monthly reads, we generally do not accept nominations from authors. There's a separate forum for author self-promotion. (It's also difficult to consider a book when there's no description in the goodreads entry.)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Summer is sadly drawing to a close. Time to organize our September monthly read. A couple ideas, from the Shirley Jackson Awards:

Scott Thomas, Midwestern Gothic
Julia Rios and Nadia Bulkin (eds.), Why Didn't You Just Leave

Other nominations?

message 781: by Tartisgood (last edited Aug 17, 2025 08:17AM) (new)

Tartisgood | 10 comments Midwest Gothic sounds good to me, but if you want more suggestions I recently purchased Black Brane and rekt which are both horror. They look both very difficult and weird though. And again, Midwestern Gothic really does sound good.

Midwestern Gothic by Scott Thomas Black Brane by Michael Cisco rekt by Alex Gonzalez

message 782: by inciminci (new)

inciminci | 25 comments I'd second rekt.

message 783: by Whitney (new)

Whitney | 245 comments I've already read Rekt, it's a good choice. All the others sound good to me, as well.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for dark October? We can roll over candidates from this month's poll, of course.

message 786: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments I really liked Nadia Bulkin's first collection. Her 2nd just came out, which I'm obviously eager to read:
Issues With Authority

message 787: by inciminci (new)

inciminci | 25 comments I'll nominate Portraits of Decay by Carson Winter, a short story collection.

Robin Murarka (robinmurarka) | 1 comments A very new member, but am truly pleased to discover a group that loves the mergence of literary and darkness. I'd like to recommend my newly released novel, Cinder which is just above novella size, so should be a less intimidating read. However, it is quite dense. Topically, it converges literary fiction, horror, science fiction and romance into one interesting experience. Thanks for the include and I hope this recommendation is all right, and is in no way meant to be spammy.

message 790: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 152 comments Can we roll over rekt? I'm already planning on reading it next month. Or would anyone be into doing a buddy read?

message 791: by Tartisgood (new)

Tartisgood | 10 comments I'd be down since I already own it. Not sure what I'll vote for though, these noms all look good. Then again I said that last month...

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Vanessa wrote: "Can we roll over rekt? I'm already planning on reading it next month. Or would anyone be into doing a buddy read?"

No problem.

Yeah buddy reads are pretty easy to set up. Just coordinate with a buddy on book and dates, make a new forum thread, and it's ready to go! There should be a number of these in the archives.

message 793: by Whitney (new)

Whitney | 245 comments I love Bulkin, and already have Issues With Authority, so I would be in for that one.
