Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Ok, let's go with Places for our April monthly read! When are you guys ready to start? I'm fine whenever.

message 652: by Chris (new)

Chris I've started already. :-)

message 653: by Schalka (new)

Schalka I'm gonna start this weekend!

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments A couple ideas for our May monthly read:

Attila Veres, The Black Maybe: Liminal Tales
Kelly Link, White Cat, Black Dog: Stories

Those are both at the top of my TBR, but I wouldn't mind veering away from short story collections (although I'm in if it's either of those). I'll offer Linghun, which I've been hearing good things about.

Linghun sounds good! It is also the only one accessible to me in Germany. The other ones are too expensive.

message 657: by Schalka (new)

Schalka These three ideas all look good to me. I'm in Germany too, but with my Kindle I could buy the e-books which are not as expensive as the physical copies.

Jack Owens | 18 comments Agony’s Lodestone looks cool

message 659: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 89 comments Did we already read Fever Dream in this group? If not, I would like to propose it.

message 660: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Jack wrote: "Agony’s Lodestone looks cool"

Please give more details than just the title.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Vavita wrote: "Did we already read Fever Dream in this group? If not, I would like to propose it."

We've read quite a few of Schweblin's books, but I don't think Fever Dream was one of them. I'll add it to the poll.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments May poll (hoho) is up:

Please vote by May 1! If you vote for a book and it wins, you are committing to participate in the conversations, by posting at least one comment to the discussion forum.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Thoughts on our June book?

There was a proposal to renominate the May books that didn't win:
Attila Veres, The Black Maybe: Liminal Tales
Samanta Schweblin, Fever Dream

Any others?

message 664: by Whitney (new)

Whitney | 245 comments I do want to read The Black Maybe. I've already read Fever Dream, but it's an excellent choice as well.

message 665: by Schalka (new)

Schalka To renominate books sounds good. I am also still interested in reading The Black Maybe.

message 666: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments The poll for June, rerunning the losers from May, is up:
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/2...

Please vote by June 2! If you vote for a book and it wins, you are committing to participate in the conversations, by posting at least one comment to the discussion forum.

message 667: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 153 comments It's kind of early, but it occured to me that I don't think we've done any manga or comics. Junji Ito's my fave, so the first thing to come to mind is Uzumaki or maybe Tombs, his newest release in English. I'm not sure how affordable getting all three volumes of Uzumaki would be outside of the United States.

message 668: by Ronald (new)

Ronald (rpdwyer) | 571 comments I second Uzumaki. I have a copy.

message 669: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments I think we can try the Ito books for July. There are ebooks, though they're slightly more expensive than most. If people balk at the cost, they can always vote for other books.

On graphic novels, I've also enjoyed recently PTSD Radio 1 (Vol. 1-2). It's also a bit cheaper than the Ito's.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for August?

An idea:
Eric Stener Carlson, Dark Arts

message 672: by Adrienne L (new)

Adrienne L Thanks for the invite to nominate a book for August. I'll nominate Hurricane Season,

message 673: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) | 368 comments I would definitely be up for Dark Arts . Nice nomination Bill. Didn’t we do Muladona by Carlson a few years back?

message 674: by Bill (last edited Jul 23, 2023 11:09AM) (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Benjamin wrote: "Didn’t we do Muladona by Carlson a few years back?"
We did. The Saint Perpetuus Club of Buenos Aires is also pretty interesting, and the descriptions of the stories sound promising.

message 675: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) | 368 comments I remember reading Carlson's contribution to that Bulgakov Homage anthology (Masters in Cafe Morphine) and really enjoyed it. I also thought his small collection Gas, was really good as well. I would definitely be interested in Saint Perpetuus Club as well. I have yet to read that one.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Eamon wrote: "Hello,
For September, maybe consider Democracy Jones: 7/13 Democracy Jones: 7/13."

Eamon, authors generally do not nominate their own books as monthly reads. We've had books in the monthly poll by authors who are members in the group, but they were always nominated by other members.

The "Author Promotion" section is more appropriate:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

message 678: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments And our winner for August is Hurricane Season:

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Thoughts about our September monthly read?

An idea:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

The Stoker awards have been announced; may also provide some possibilities:
https://locusmag.com/2023/06/2022-sto...

And the Jacksons:
https://www.shirleyjacksonawards.org/...

The winners have been announced, but you can't identify them from the nominees page. (No, I can't believe how someone messed up their design a few years ago, argh.)

This is the time of the year where I go through both sets of nominees for single author collection. I'm also planning to read the Scott Nicolay, Cassandra Khaw, RJ Joseph, Allison Wyse, and Paula Ashe. (We've already read the Richard Thomas and Attila Veres collections as monthly reads here. I've also read the Kim Fu.) If anyone else is interested in these, please speak up!

message 680: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Last call for September nominations. We could also skip a month if there's little interest.

Update: just read the first 50 pages of the Khaw collection, and decided I couldn't take anymore.

message 681: by Whitney (new)

Whitney | 245 comments There are 2 or 3 other September choices in other groups which I really want to read, so likely wouldn't join in another one.

Nuzo Onoh is great, though, and should be read by a lot more people.

message 682: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 153 comments I'm planning on focusing on mostly new releases in September, so I'd be okay with taking a month off.

message 683: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Time to organize our October monthly read, after our skip month. Any thoughts on:

Nuzo Onoh, Unhallowed Graves
Paula Ashe, We Are Here to Hurt Each Other

I actually started the Paula Ashe, but can wait for the monthly read to kick in; it's very good.

message 684: by Whitney (new)

Whitney | 245 comments The Paula Ashe has been sitting at the top of my TBR for months, but keeps getting bumped by other group reads. So I vote for that.

Also, I loved Unhallowed Graves, definitely recommend.

message 685: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 89 comments I never know what to nominate as I can only identify literary horror after I've read it. If it fits, I would like to nominate The Changeling
I bought it a thousand years ago and I want to finally read it before watching the TV series.

message 686: by Bill (new)

message 687: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for November?

We can certainly include the two October nominees that didn't win. I also suggest:
Michael Wehunt, The Inconsolables

message 688: by Adriane (new)

Adriane | 39 comments LOVE Michael Wehunt and have this book already, of course!!! I second this suggestion

This sounds good. I am gonna get even if it doesn't win the poll.

message 690: by Amy (new)

Amy Gentry (goodreadscomamy_gentry) | 2 comments I’d love to nominate Lisa Tuttle’s MY DEATH, newly out from NYRB Classics! It’s a novella, very short and a quick read. But really, any of her books would make a great read one of these months. She’s a horror/SFF great very much underappreciated in the states.

message 691: by Bill (new)

message 692: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Thoughts on our holiday monthly book? I can certainly include the intriguing titles that haven't won the poll recently, like Lisa Tuttle's My Death. And maybe

Vanessa Onwuemezi, Dark Neighbourhood

message 693: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 89 comments I might skip the book from December
I was only able to read 50% of the 3rd short story from our current book over the weekend. I am very busy and tired.

message 694: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Last call for December nominations. If there's not enough interest, we can take a holiday break.

message 695: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 89 comments I am still on my reading slump. I haven’t managed to read over 5 pages in the last 2 weeks.

message 696: by Schalka (new)

Schalka My Death sounds very interesting but maybe it should be saved for January if everyone is too busy in December....

message 697: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) | 368 comments I'd be up for something a little off the beaten path...

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) | 368 comments Actually... I would like to propose a Quentin Crisp collection... it appears to be free via kindle unlimited... no idea what that means.

I'm giving this one the award for Most Pretentious Book Description Ever. I think I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than read this book after wading through that drivel.

message 700: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Uminsky (benjaminu) | 368 comments For reals? I have read way worse descriptions than that. Lol.
