Charlene (Char)🍁☕️📚 | 79 comments Hello
I normally don’t nominate books as I’m not really familiar with literary horror. I’ll just wait for the choices and vote on the poll

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Last call for nominations. If you're up for Miscreations: Gods, Monstrosities & Other Horrors, please speak up. If there's no interest and no other nominations, we can take a break and resume monthly reads for October.

message 603: by Emily (new)

Emily I actually really want to read Miscreations: God's, Monstrosities & Other Horrors ! I don't have any nominations, I'm pretty new to literary horror.

message 604: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 153 comments I'd read Miscreations. It's cheap, and I haven't read it before.

message 605: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'd say we have critical mass (low bar, I know) to read Miscreations next month. I'll broadcast an announcement soon.

message 606: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Any preference on start date for Miscreations? I'm ready whenever.

message 607: by Emily (new)

Emily next week sometime is good for me !

Charlene (Char)🍁☕️📚 | 79 comments Hi everyone my apologies these past few weeks have been a whirlwind! Let me know when we will start reading I’ll buy the book! Thanks Bill !

message 609: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Thanks Charlene and Emily. Let's go with late next week. I'll broadcast an announcement.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for our monthly book for the month of Halloween?

How about
Sofia Samatar, Tender
Claire Kohda, Woman, Eating
Richard Butner, The Adventurists: And Other Stories

message 611: by Vavita (new)

Vavita | 89 comments I would like to nominate BELOVED by TONI MORRISON

message 612: by P.D. (new)

P.D. Alleva | 2 comments Not sure if this is allowed but I'd like to nominate my book, Golem. Golem is a story highly influenced by books like Frankenstein, The Shining, and Interview with the Vampire. Definitely literary horror but also psychological and gothic too. lmk your thoughts. If accepted I don't mind sending out free ebooks to everyone Thank you, PD Alleva.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Authors generally do not nominate their own books for monthly reads. The Author Promotions forums are more appropriate:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

We have had monthly books by authors who are Literary Horror members, but they were nominated by other members.

Charlene (Char)🍁☕️📚 | 79 comments Hello!
I would liked to nominate Norman Partridge
Dark Harvest not sure if this is considered literary
Horror but I love the Halloween theme

I was soooo close to nominating this one, then I got nervous that I have too many commitments already and wouldn't get to it. But I would definitely make an effort!

Hi, I'm not sure if we can suggest non-fiction but I've been enjoying
"All the Living and the Dead: from Embalmers to Executioners" by Hayley Campbell and I think other people might enjoy it. Fits the season too.

Non-fiction is fine. You do plan on participating in the discussion if it wins, right? Just checking since you mentioned you're already reading it. Thanks.

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Ok, it's time to look past the big event at the end of the month, and consider our November monthly book.

Fortunately, the Shirley Jackson Awards team has *finally* announced their shortlist for 2021:
https://www.shirleyjacksonawards.org/...

I usually read most of the single-author collections on the shortlist (though I'll probably skip Kurt Fawver). How about

J.A.W. McCarthy, Sometimes We're Cruel and Other Stories
John Linwood Grant, Where All is Night, and Starless

Charlene (Char)🍁☕️📚 | 79 comments Hi Bill!
I didn’t have any recommendations and
You’re good with your nominations I
Would like to upvote Jaw McCarthy that
Book looks good!

Only two nominees this time, both from me. I hate this to be the sound of one guy typing, but I didn't get any other nominations. Please vote by Saturday 10/29. If you vote for a book and it wins, you're committing to participate in the conversations.

message 628: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 37 comments Both noms look good, Bill!

message 629: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 153 comments I already had the J.A.W. McCarthy book and wasn't opposed to buying the other one, so the nominations were fine with me.

message 630: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Anticipating the distraction of the holidays, we should start organizing our December monthly read. I have an obvious suggestion, from an author we've read as a group and enjoyed:

Samanta Schweblin, Seven Empty Houses

message 631: by Schalka (new)

Schalka Seven Empty Houses sound very good, Bill!

I would also like to nominate Season's Creepings: Tales of Holiday Horror (if anthologies are okay?)

message 632: by Schalka (new)

Schalka Oh wait my suggestion isn´t an anthologie, it´s one author...So I hope it should be fine.

message 633: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Both collections and anthologies are fine, thanks.

Charlene (Char)🍁☕️📚 | 79 comments Both choices look good! Can’t wait ! Im excited for December

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Nominations for our Feb 2023 monthly read? Can't say I'm bursting with good ideas.

This looks amusing:
Brandon Applegate (ed.), It Was All A Dream: An Anthology of Bad Horror Tropes Done Right

An old standby:
Wendy Wagner (ed.), Nightmare Magazine, Issue 123

message 638: by Heather (new)

Heather For February I nominate 'T.W. Brown's The Ugly Beginning'

message 639: by Ronald (new)

message 640: by Schalka (new)

Schalka I nominate "Dismal Dreams" by Red Lagoe.

message 641: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Last call for nominations!

Heather, Ronald, Schalka, thanks for the intriguing ideas that will go on the ballot. (I have to say the cover and blurb for Brown's The Ugly Beginning makes it sound like a straight zombie thriller and not as literary as our usual books here. But I will accept it this time.)

I'm going to withdraw my earlier nominations and substitute this item which I just discovered:
S.H. Cooper (ed.), A Woman Built by Man

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments Thoughts on our April monthly book?

An idea:
John Brhel (ed.), Places We Fear to Tread

message 648: by Chris (last edited Mar 31, 2023 05:30AM) (new)

Chris This looks like an interesting one, Bill.

message 649: by Bill (new)

Bill Hsu (billhsu) | 1764 comments I didn't get any other nominations, and was planning to skip April's monthly read. If anyone other than Chris and me are interested in Places We Fear to Tread, speak up ASAP and we'll make that our group book for this month.
