But the details on the war fed me with some interesting stories on what went on in the main characters lives...
Now I felt the exact opposite.... I thought the story was very slow moving and tedious up until the war scenes. It was odd, like starting a whole new book, the feel of it is completely different. But I think that's the point: Robbie's world is now completely different, completely changed from what it was before. I think the key feeling for him is that he'd rather be in the horror of war than going through the endless days in a pointless prison cell, with nothing at all to look forward to. For someone that was so intellectually keen, to suddenly have all of that taken away and just have bare walls to stare at.... he must have been going out of his mind! And now he has the contrast of hating the atrocities of war, yet being secretly grateful for the change, for something different. Talk about the "lesser" of two evils!
