This book was a paperback western that I read in the 1970's or early 1980's, but that was probably published prior to that. It focused on two men who were partners, one of whom was deaf or mute or both.

The only thing I can think of is the movie Lightning Jack with Paul Hogan and Cuba Gooding Jr.
I thought maybe the movie was based on the book, so I checked, but it is not. :-( Thanks for the suggestion though!
