Man! I'm sorry to hear that... Lucifer's Hammer was one of the very first books I ever read, and still dear to my heart.
I know he wasn't young, but any idea what happened?
According to GRRM he caught some bug after attending DragonCon. He fell sick and even posted that in his blog or something. It was sudden.RIP, I only read one novel, the first and second of the Falkenberg series. I have lots of issues with it but The Mote's book is on my TBR.

Pournelle is probably best known for his work with Larry Niven on novels such as The Mote in God's Eye, Footfall & Lucifer's Hammer. Solo he wrote Janissaries among many other military scifi stories.
