Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog My guess is that I am the last of the people actually reading the Pirate.
I do not blame anyone for giving up on it.

All I knew of Sir Walter Scott was Ivanhoe. A much better book.
That said what seems to be common between them is a central theme of Prejudice.
Ivanhoe has it down to Saxons, vs, Norman with the answer being they are all going to be British.
But there is also the fact of Antisemitism which is never resolved.

A proper sub-title to The Pirate could be: Are you white enough to marry my daughters? I have lost count of all the various prejudices modern and ancient on parade in the book.

Is it just me seeing this?
Is there a good, fairly recent Bio of Scott that might address this?

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog Finished it today
Some nice twists in the end, not at all obvious, at least some of it.
Towards the end I thought I was reading the unfunny version of the Pirates of Penzance

Really? I liked Ivanhoe, but it's far from my favorite by him. I think I actually liked The Pirate a bit better. Maybe the vivid setting had something to do with it.

I really liked The Heart of Midlothian, one of the reasons being the wonderful character Jeannie.

Phrodrick slowed his growing backlog Having finished Pirate -It does finish well but getting there was a terrific bore.
It does not help that my e edition is less than perfect, making the blur of languages that much harder.
So may characters get entire chapters for no discernible reason.

I get that he is consciously thinking of set design, knowing this book will be a play. No I am not impressed with much of the over long, and long winded sentence structure.

I am now at two Scott novels and have a number more in this e edition. I know he can do better and will have a better rule on him once I have more titles on my done pile.
