Ian Just finished Life and Times of Michael K|35331659

Written by JM Coetzee - a story about a good guy having a tough time living in South Africa in the 1980's. Gripping.

Really good. Well, it did win the Booker prize in 1983!!

Sounds great I'll have to see about getting it.

Ian Ian Rankin

Standing in Another Man's Grave (Inspector Rebus, #18) by Ian Rankin

Stars - 4/5

Really good story and would have received 5 stars except for the slightly weak, contrived and rather unrealistic ending.

I like that review of it, but can you tell me a bit more about it. I'm really in like a historical, mystery mood.

I really adore James Patterson's the women's murder club and the zoo

message 6: by Ian (new)

Ian Will have a look at that one Jade haven't read any James Patterson...yet.

Historical - fiction? Yep, good stuff.
Try "12 years a Slave" - sad, but a good read.
True story.

Anyway, what historical period particularly appeals to you?

A really good book I thought was "1984" by George Orwell - I know you like fantasy pieces so try this classic which is set in the future (dystopian world - about control).

Susan | 13 comments Talking of George Orwell, I have a novel on my 'definitely TBR,' list - The Last Man in Europe: A Novel. I also enjoy Robert Harris and am looking forward to his latest, Munich.

message 8: by Ian (new)

Ian Yep, read a few of Orwell....Homage to Catelonia etc
In fact, met a relative of his up in Keswick about 5 years ago.
Some old dear working in one of the Charity shops who said she was his niece (I think). Small world or what?

Robert Harris - read Fatherland...thought that was pretty good. Hopefully will read more of his work in future.

message 9: by Ian (new)

Ian Just looked t that Dennis Glover novel about Orwell. Looks good will definitely give it a go.
Have you read 1985 by Anthony Burgess? Socialist State Rules! A good read i thought.

message 10: by Susan (new)

Susan | 13 comments I haven't read that, Ian, but will take a look.

Ian More than You Can Say: Paul Torday

More Than You Can Say by Paul Torday

Enthralling - A thoroughly absorbing adventure story... and not a Salmon in sight!!

5 stars from moi.

Susan | 13 comments Ian, you mention in another thread that you like Ian Rankin. Do you like spy stories, as well as crime? If so, might I recommend the brilliant Slow Horses Slow Horses (Slough House, #1) by Mick Herron series by Mick Herron. It is a wonderful, very modern, series; but with a real nod to John le Carré

message 13: by Ian (new)

Ian Hi Susan - Not really read much to do with spying but will definitely bookmark that one for later.

At the moment, into reading lots of uk crime fiction...nice and simple stuff. Think that's because there's loads in the charity shops and that's mainly were i get my books from......either that, or 1p (+ £2.80 postage) from Amazon! :)

Susan | 13 comments Do you have a kindle, Ian? Lots of bargains there, although I know some people prefer 'proper' books. However, as I commute and like to have more than one book on the go, I love my kindle.

message 15: by Ian (new)

Ian No Kindle Susan - love my books!!

Mrs Ian uses one tho....

message 16: by Susan (new)

Susan | 13 comments I used to be the same, but - some years ago now - when we went on holiday, my hubbie suggested I get one and I have never looked back. I thought I would find it hard to read on, but I remember finishing a book in a series, looking up the next and downloading it in seconds and I was sold!

message 17: by Ian (new)

Ian Yes, it definitely has its advantages, especially when going on holiday.

I've got that to read as well. You going to carry-on with the rest of the series?
