I did remember Meredith, more than Bailey and even Alex. I'm going to have to go back and read the blurbs for previous books in the series.
That was what sent me scouring the prior books Character Lists! Names were familiar, but remembering the backstories was harder.
I didn't remember Meredith from the Vartanian books at all until she mentioned Alex and Bailey in this one.
FYI, I created a group to house character lists for series. When I belonged to Shelfari, that site maintained character lists on each book page. I went through the laborious process of copying that data for as many of my series as I could remember before it "merged" with Goodreads. I continue to update them. When we complete this series next month, I'll copy this series into the group.
Here's the link to the group if you're interested.

Thank you! In a big series like this one where she reintroduces characters all the time it drives me crazy to recognize a mane but have no ide as to their backstory.
Funnily enough I really remembered Bailey and she was imprisoned with the Chaplain who nearly died. But I didn't remember which book. I'm so glad that they are together all these books later. This is one of the strengths of this series the interconnections of the characters through the series arcs.
That’s why I believe it’s so important to read the books in order. Lisa, you have much more feelings invested in Bailey knowing her backstory. Otherwise, she would just be a nebulous blip in the story.

You get so much more out of it with all the interconnecting backstories and history. Makes me a bit more forgiving with some of my niggles - the length of some of the later books and waffling and the inappropriate intimate scenes in the middle of heinous murder investigations.
