Mr. Bennet can be so sarcastic to the point of rudeness quite often. Sometimes I pity Mrs. Bennet because she's honestly too dense to realize when he's insulting her.

The Bennett parents' relationship is not good at all. The father thinks he is so superior (which he kind of is) and says rude things not only to his wife but to his daughters too sometimes. Not to mention favoritism. Of course, the mother is no saint either. She's a horrible gossip with little common sense.
Charlotte's views on marriage and falling in love are very...emotionless. A stark contrast from Lizzy's belief in marrying for love. However, we have to remember that Charlotte is much older and, by standards of society then, should have been married years ago and is now a burden upon her family. Though she talks about marriage in a very distant, cold way, she probably has simply given up on the idea of marrying for love and is now just desperately trying to get out of her family's house. I always felt sorry for her. She didn't have the luxury of being able to marry for love and not livelihood.
grrrrr :-( ..... now I remember why I never read this book, I can't stand this old english talk... but other than that so far it is really good! I don't know if I am supposed to I know all these olden books have a "deeper meaning" but this is kinda funny. Darcy is a bit of an ass in my opinion, almost arrogant. Jane I am not so sure about, I want Elizabeth, she is my spirit animal!!

I don't know if I am supposed to I know all these ol..."Jane Austen writes a lot of satire. In this one she is kind of poking fun at society and how they perceive people and how they are so quick to change their perceptions. Darcy is arrogant, for sure, and also seems a bit socially awkward. I love him. Elizabeth thinks she's more clear minded than she really is and eagerly jumps on the I Hate Darcy train with the testament of a single person. Granted, she isn't on the train as fast as the other villagers.

We were talking about this book in class yesterday. One classification of it is a "comedy of manners," which means its poking fun at a particular group of people. I can totally see it! Mrs. Bennett's obsession with getting her daughters married off (it's important, but not THAT important), Lady Catherine and her eternal uppitiness because she is a "Lady," and the list goes on. Honestly, I don't blame Lizzie for being so cynical and critical of people.

My fave is the one with Collin Firth as Darcy ... but it's six hours long ... a mini series! The one with Kira Knightley missed too many details.
Have either of you watched The Lizzy Bennet Diaries on YouTube? I watched them but didn't really like them. However, I must say, I hardly like any sort of modern day P&P tale. They all just seem to be lacking something. I feel like modernizing Elizabeth and Darcy causes you to lose some of the special qualities of the book. Also, I just love the old fashioned-ness of it all.

A book called Jane of Austin: A Novel of Sweet Tea and Sensibility and a book/movie called Austenland. I read a biography of her once too.

Me too, Saige!! This one is taking me a bit to get used to the dialog between characters. I'm also having a hard time knowing who is talking to who, since it will just have quotation markings followed by another set of dialog quotations, but not be followed up with who said what. It' just taking me a bit to get used to it.
Chapter 9- (view spoiler)
Chapter 2: I gotta say, this poor Mr. Bingley is gonna have his hands full. I can't imagine moving to a new place and having everyone immediately come after me for my money. And kudos to Mr. Bennet for being so powerfully sarcastic within the first two pages of his characterization.
^ Saige, I agree about Mr. Bennet! HA! I didn't realize how sarcastic his character was, but caught onto that real quick! HA!
