American minimalist artist Robert Mangold in his studio. Here's what he has to say about being an artist. So simple but so true. True not only for a painter but true for anybody engaged in literature and the arts.

THAT WAS GOOD WHAT I DID YESTERDAY
When you go into the studio the question is: What can you do to make your day meaningful? When you go back to your studio the next day and look at what you did, if you’ve got a good feeling about that, it’s great, because you can say, “That was good what I did yesterday.”

THE RING
"I like setting up problems for the viewer, like how do you visually deal with a ring when what’s usually in the center of a painting is very important? It's like the main course isn't there and you're having to deal with everything around what would normally be the main course."

HERE I AM
“The thing that began to fascinate me about painting was that it didn’t deal with time, in the sense that almost every other medium does.. It plants itself in front of you, and says, ‘here I am.’”

"Like the Minimalist sculptors, however, Mangold held fast to the "objectness" of his art, refusing to assign any meaning to it external to the artwork itself. In this sense, his contribution to the genre of Minimalism was both exemplary and exceptional."
