Scott Spotson (scottspotson) | 272 comments Anyone up for a speculative fiction round? To me, speculative fiction is "what if" in our world, or possibly another world, where something fantastical is introduced, throwing off the protagonist as he or she must understand what it means. Thus, space operas, fantasies where the world is already settled with its own landscapes and creatures, i.e. The Lord of the Rings, would not fit in. (Some would argue they do fit in, but we might as well strive for an esoteric round, rather than the usual sci-fi or fantasy rounds).

Examples? A Wrinkle in Time, American Gods, Percy Jackson, Miss Peregrine's Children, The Time Machine.

We can discuss if our books fit, and if there is enough interest in this round.

Scott Spotson (scottspotson) | 272 comments Moderator what happens if the interest is so low in a proposed group, like this one? Perhaps better to delete our posts?

Thanks!

You never know. This one has been open for little more than a week. Maybe some interest will show up. Let's at least give it a some more time, before giving up.

M. Wiggins (msusannewiggins) | 9 comments I write speculative fiction. It is indeed a genre of ‘what-ifs’. For example, ‘what if’ one writes about a city: it appears futuristic on the surface – the technology is far more advanced than what we have today, but no timeframe is given – could be a thousand years from now (SF) … if it weren’t for that circa 1900s submarine (maybe Steampunk?); it’s somewhat dystopian—by definition—yet there’s a utopian-like ‘livability’ we all love/hate; then along comes an elemental character who can part an ocean for fun on a good day, uproot trees on a bad one, and call on her shape-shifting fairy clan for back-up on any given moody Tuesday (Fantasy); and this ability comes in handy when fighting against the overlords on one side (Dystopian) and the mysterious ‘zombie-like monsters’ on the other (Horror). And if “The End” dangles over a cliff (a cliffhanger), or ends w/one or more unanswered questions, it’s probably a series! In my opinion, speculative fiction incorporates the aspects of several genres… and makes you/the reader ponder the ‘what-ifs’.)

K.T. Munson | 278 comments I have a space opera - Unfathomable Chance that fits into this I think.

I technically have a fantasy series as well that isn't a 'traditional fantasy'...but it doesn't really get super speculative from a circling back to earth 'what if' until book 2 so I don't know if that works. I'd love to do The Sixth Gate here, but am okay to just do my other book.

Thanks,
K.T.
