The year is 2036 and the world as you know it has changed beyond recognition. The Longpointe War ended with the creation of a disease. There was a military draft and war-based weapons were being made by the hour, but that wasn't enough. President Harrell's hand was forced to the extreme. There was no way he was going to let his country fall, not after the Second Depression or the recent terrorists attacks. So he allowed the creation of a virus to bring an end to the war. It did that all right, and more. It was called the Terrergin virus, and everyone would come to know the name. A laboratory compound was created specifically for this purpose. X57 and the scientists working there would create the structure for this weapon, but their research would not see the end. One of the scientists had been exposed without realizing it, turning against his co-workers. Panic erupted and the lab burst into flames, killing thousands. The majority of the research collected there burned, and the surviving information that was stored in the computers was blocked, erased from any wandering eyes. To keep the public's confidence high, and their support for the virus, the government decided to keep the files and erase the existence of X57, including the scientists who survived. No one could know of their failure.

With the US falling to Russia's advancements, President Harrell decided to set up another lab that would start from scratch. After a few years, Project Serigo was started at Base 9Y. And they would end this war, only not the way they had expected. Instead of starting over, someone was able to breach the security on the protected files, recreating the Terrergin virus. Again, a similar situation occurred, where one staff member died from a lab accident and because he was exposed, he came back as one of the undead. Before anyone knew what was happening, the lab was overrun with the undead and the virus had escaped into the air, infecting everyone through the water and food supplies.

It took seven days for the power and water to shut off, a month before the radio stopped broadcasting its never ending warning message, and nine months, seventeen days since the beginning of the apocalypse.
