Susie I was a huge fan of The Narrow Road to the Deep North and a friend had told me that she thought The Sound of One Hand Clapping was even better. When I saw that it was available from the library on audio I snapped it up. I think that was a mistake. After listening I wish I had have read it instead. I don't think audio was the best way to immerse myself in his style of writing.

The book in non linear and tells the story of Bojan and Sonja Buloc, a father and daughter who immigrate to Tasmania from war torn Slovenia. Sonja's mother leaves, never to return, and in her wake Bojan is left to care for his three year old daughter. He uses alcohol as a way to chase his demons away which leaves him in a less than ideal position to parent.

Thirty-five years later Sonja returns to their home in Tasmania and uncovers her past. The past is full of darkness, violence and despair. The book does end with some hope but is ultimately a harrowing tale. Not for the faint hearted.
