I don't remember the book well so this is kind of a long shot. I remember the protagonist had to walk on a design that was on the floor and it conveyed some power. I think he was a prince and was exiled for some reason. I also remember a scene in the book where he was fighting with someone and the other person had a knife up his sleeve. I read the book around 1999-2000 but I don't think it was a recent book at that time.

The Chronicles of Amber (complete series in one volume) by Roger Zelazny, and there are actually two patterns, and one of the main characters ends up walking both. Too bad he died before he could write more of them.
