Chuck McIntyre (jithrae) | 37 comments Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a story or full novel in the LitRPG style that features augmented reality as the central game world instead of the more typical full virtual reality immersion scenarios.

I imagine this would have to be science fiction, but I'm not opposed to reading about a fantasy AR game that reaches world-altering membership.

Thanks in advance,
Chuck

Freedom | 198 comments I don't know of any, sorry.
Hopefully after everyone is done burying their nose in the new release of Way of the Shaman, someone will have a recommendation. =)

All of these are VR style. AR could also be consideres urban-LitRPG. Ie. Dresden files and its relationship with fantasy.

Sounds like the first suggestion is the only kinda, maybe, possibly the right one.

R.J. Triveri | 35 comments I believe Chuck is looking for augmented reality in the veins of Excell World and the final movie of SAO in which the mechanics of gameplay are in the real world and only overlay reality with a Goggle class device instead of changing to a different world.

It's an interesting idea really. MIght steal this to write for fun later.

Chuck McIntyre (jithrae) | 37 comments RJ, that sounds exactly like what I want! Please steal and I will happily be an early reviewer. :)

I'll check out the other suggestions as well, though The Gam3 is definitely not the augmented reality I meant, though it's cool how that story has real world effects for sure.

Justin | 1 comments Not LitRPG, but some really good books based on AR are Demon and Freedom by Daniel Suarez.

Chuck McIntyre (jithrae) | 37 comments Thanks, I read Demon and Freedom before I learned about the genre. Those are good examples. I think the only thing that keeps them from being really LitRPG is that most of the leveling and powers aren't in the hands of the main characters.

Pieter (madfox11) | 14 comments Fantasy Online by Harmon Cooper at least starts with augmented reality. People appear to be killed/attacked through augmented reality in the first chapter or so. After that, the protagonist goes into the actual game for the investigation. Mind you, as of this moment I have only read the first 10% or so of the book, so I cannot guarantee how it goes or its quality.
