Luke does a lot of soul searching while he's on the train, prior to the abduction attempt. This is the first time we've gotten his point of view following the San Salvador attack. Were you surprised to learn that he was considering leaving BOI? Anything about his personal insights you'd like to discuss?

Anita (anitanodiva) | 849 comments No I wasn't surprised he was grappling with returning to the BOI. He almost died and his mom's voice kept asking "When is it enough?" It was tough form him to realize that he was mortal and that maybe it was time to make time to have that wife and kids.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I read this book out of order, so I did not get all the connections I should have. --a recommendation to read series in order, but I had not been aware the first time :-(

I think he'd been in many risky situations before but this was the first time he thought he had died. That really messes with your head, to experience your own mortality and live. I would have been surprised if he hadn't been re-examining his life.

I didn't think he would go so far as to leave BOI so that was a little surprising but understandable. After this experience in Sierra Leone where he pushed through his fears and regained his mojo, Luke's probably going to stay.

Robin (robinmy) | 1214 comments I wasn't surprised at all. I think anyone who had a near-death experience due to his work would have second thoughts about going back to the job. It would be in the back of your mind all the time.
