Only 50?

:)

L.J. Kane (l_j_kane_author) | 346 comments I have 67 on my GR to-read shelf, and about 30 between my two (real) bookcases. I won't even mention my kindle!
I haven't much time to read now, though I do have 3 on the go, two horror/thrillers and a business self help book.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 440 comments Think I'm down to 70ish paperbacks, daren't count the ones on the kindle

message 6: by W (new)

W Well, the 50 plus already sounds like a forbidding number.Too little time, too many books and reading fatigue. And then there are the 300 plus on my GR wish list and hundreds more read years ago which I'd like to read again.

I'm still adding the books I read years ago too! There must be lots of them that I have forgotten over the years.

Paris (kerbytejas) (kerbytejas) | 4862 comments well whoops I have a few thousand, lots of freebies from unknown authors and purchases. I really need to stop grabbing freebies, and read what i have...lol

Me too, I was doing really well, but got quite a few this month!

Freebies are too tempting! I have lots of samples on my kindle too, and I really want to find the time to read them all so I can buy those I like the best.

The good thing about freebies is nothing to loose - if they are really bad, you can delete them, but if they are good ( I have discovered some new authors this way) you have made a discovery

So true. I have signed up for the Free Booksy emails, and it's really easy to click through to get the books.

Sandysbookaday (taking a midwinter break) (sandyj21) | 4769 comments I have in excess of 600 physical books, probably 400 or so unread. I only keep the ones I know I will read again, otherwise I pass them on to friends. And on my Kindle I currently have 874 books, mostly unread as I remove them after reading, knowing I can always reload them if I want to read them again.

Definitely agree

message 15: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments Including Kindle books, physical books - 3,663. Many are in the process of being read, at least 100 are close to the end.

But it is terrible.

message 16: by Paul (new)

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments My GR to-read shelf has 917 books, but the true number of books owned unread (physical or ebook) is almost certainly higher, as there'll be some missing I've not updated for whatever reason.

I don't tend to grab random freebies, as several people have said they do. I get various book offer emails - bookbub, that kind of thing - but only tend to get things that I actually want, an author I know or have been recommended, or something that really jumps out and grabs me. It's not like I'm lacking choice.

message 17: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) | 15200 comments No freebies for me. I don't want the clutter. I probably have 400 unread books, all but seven of which are physical copies. This brings me much joy. I am puzzled that anyone would view being surrounded by great book reading options as a bad thing. Carry on.

message 18: by Bill (new)

I'm embarrassed to say how many unread books I have, but it would make you all look like amateurs. I'm not even counting the Kindle books.

message 21: by Donna (new)

Donna (drspoon) Probably about 250-300 on the shelf and the same number in my Kindle. I regularly purge those that I am no longer interested in and know I won't get to, so there are about 100 in boxes for the used book store at my library.

Yes, if only all life's little problems were as enjoyable as having too many books to read. 😁😂😄😅😆

Exactly!😉

message 30: by Chris (new)

Chris | 316 comments It's embarrassing on how many UNREAD books I have on shelves, the floor in closets etc. I am slowly but surely entering them in TBR files on GR. Maybe that will help me keep track of what I have better & even help me find them!

message 31: by Iza (new)

Iza Brekilien (izabrekilien) I'm ashamed to say I have 467 unread virtual books on my kindle, and about 50 on my "real" shelf. I guess I'm a hoarder ?... And I keep adding more to my TBR pile ! But I guess it's a better addiction than drinking ;)

message 32: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (age1213) | 34 comments I have 456 on my owned-TBR shelf. Buuuut, that isn't counting how many I have packed up in boxes that I haven't entered into Goodreads yet. One day, I'll add them all. But, that day probably isn't anytime soon.

Definitely nothing to be ashamed of

Why ashamed? I think it's great to have so much choice, although I sometimes feel guilty I haven't given some of my older books a chance, could be a new favourite author waiting to be discovered

message 35: by D. (new)

D. Wickles (ddominikwickles) | 244 comments I have recently moved so I did slim down my unread book collection, donating ones I have lost interest in. So now, awaiting new bookcases, I have only about 70 unread books. I try to keep the number down, by reading one of my books for each library book that I read, so I feel less guilty when I buy some more at a sale :)

message 36: by W (new)

W I bought 18 online last month. So far read only 5 but there are at least a 100 more which are very tempting.

AMEN to that!!!

message 38: by Steven (new)

Steven Moore When I get review queries and the book looks interesting, I send a form letter that announces it goes in my TBRoR list ("To Be Read or Reviewed") list which I keep for R&R reading. (I do my "official reviewing" at Bookpleasures, so that's all I can do.) I prefer to unburden my shelves and use my Kindle where possible...or the cloud...to store them.

message 39: by William (new)

William I am embarrassed to say, I have hundreds to read !

It shows my good taste but lack of time !

message 40: by Kam-Hung (new)

Kam-Hung Soh I keep my formal to-read list down to one or two (it ballooned up to six recently when I wanted to finish a series) with a couple of unread books on my shelves for a rainy day. Having a long list causes blocks me from picking up something on the spur of the moment. Ovsiankina Effect?

I do, and I've reread some of the books I've already read. If they're not worth keeping, I agree with you.

One of my challenges this year was to read some of the books I've had longest on my TBR bookshelf. I'm thinking of taking the 16 books longest on my shelf for my 12 + 4 challenge next year... :)

If they are well-loved I keep them, or reference or books I want to share. I always keep books in the guest room, and if I know the person very well & have a heads-up, I move books into the room that I think they may like or need to read!

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 440 comments Joseph wrote: "Who wants to be in a home with books you've already read? A few, yes, and most of my shelves hold books waiting their turn."

message 47: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Carrabis (josephcarrabis) Hello again,
Read through my reviews and you'll find that I have certain books I re-re-reread. Those are my keepers (and not many, these). But mostly my shelves are books waiting their turn. Plus I keep our local library in business. And I download enough from Gutenberg that I could be a substation.
There was a time people, visiting us, thought they'd walked into a library. Many books we read once and knew we wouldn't read again yet kept them on our shelves.
Now we have a fine line for keepers v give-away books. There are several charities in our areas that sell books and use the money for good purpose. We're well known to them.
